Today we celebrate the Seventh Sunday of Easter. It is so for most of the world and states of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania. For the rest of the country they celebrate Ascension Thursday — on a Sunday??? The Scriptures tell us that the Lord ascended into heaven after spending 40 days with his disciples after the resurrection. In that time he taught and left instructions for the Church.Forty days after Easter Sunday falls on a Thursday, not a Sunday. Is this one of those concessions that have been made to having less priests or less devout Catholics? Should we make these concessions? I don’t know. As President Obama said, when questioned about when life begins, it’s “beyond my pay grade.” [By the way, it’s a scientifically verifiable answer. Every book on embryology, the science of human development, that I have consulted states unequivocally that human life starts at the point of fertilization, that is, the moment of conception.] This, however is beyond my pay grade. I do what the Bishop asks me to do but at the same time I’m glad that our Bishops in the Northeast and in Nebraska decided to keep it as it should be and as stated in the Bible: the Ascension is on Thursday. I noticed that the Amish Farmer’s market is closed for the “Lord’s Ascension on Thursday May 25.” And they’re Protestants!! In any case, whether you celebrate the Lord’s glorious Ascension on Thursday (preferable) or Sunday (lax), there is one thing for certain: The Lord promised to be with us to the end of the age, to sit at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us and to return for us. He said: "I will not leave you orphans, I will come back to you, and your hearts will rejoice.” (Jn 14:18) That is what is important. Jesus took on flesh like ours and his heart still beats like ours. His Sacred Heart beats for us. For that we thank and praise Him.
