SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

“2021: THE YEAR OF SAINT JOSEPH” Pope Francis announced a special year dedicated to St. Joseph starting from December 8, 2020 until December 8, 2021, on the occasion of the 150th

anniversary of the proclamation of St. Joseph as the Patron of the Universal Church, as well as the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady. The Apostolic Penitentiary also issued a decree granting special indulgences for the duration of the special year to celebrate the anniversary. Keep watching the parish bulletin for more information and exciting news about our parish’s plans for this holy year!

USE THE LIGHT OF GOD “And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was.” The light has come into the world in the person of Jesus Christ! We no longer have to fumble in the darkness. We have been gifted with the illumination we need to see our way through things and find what we really are looking for. All these years later, however, so many are still reluctant to accept him. Perhaps they are unconvinced, disinterested, preoccupied, stubborn, apprehensive, or all of the above. Everyone has their own reason for not wanting to turn on the switch.

But there are so many answers to so many of our problems in this humble Child of Nazareth. A simple birth teaches us about God’s tender wedded relationship with humanity. It speaks to the expanse of God’s salvation across the globe, and the incarnate Divine wonders and blessings that are a part of our life moment to moment. It calls us to understand the design of world order God intended as found in the Beatitudes, the sacredness of every human life and all of creation and the meaning of things we struggle with most, like suffering and death. We have a lot of Good News to share, not just with a privileged few but with all the world. All races and creeds can receive God’s healing word. God continues to manifest himself even now! Use the light to find what you are really looking for! ©LPi

The Rite of Acceptance was celebrated by Fr. Anthony for John Tsur. A member of the RCIA Team, Melinda Rabbia, was also present. Please pray for John who is seeking initiation into the Catholic Church for Easter 2021.

    SEEKING THE LIGHT

    A PRAYER FOR

    THE YEAR OF SAINT JOSEPH

2021 (as proclaimed by Pope Francis)

To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our afflictions, and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse, we confidently invoke your patronage also. Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities. O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness. As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection, so that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen.

    FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD ~ JANUARY 3, 2021

Among people prominent in religious matters who died in 2020 were:

Fr. George Coyne, S.J., a vigorous and effective defender of the Catholic Church’s commendable attitude to science. He reminded us that the Church has consistently supported science’s rational learning, and that our interpretation of the Bible takes note of the importance of distinguishing its religious message from science’s field of expertise. “One thing the Bible is not,”

Fr. Coyne said, “is a scientific textbook. Scripture is made up of myth, of poetry, of history. But it is simply not teaching science.”

Virgil C. Dechant, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus from 1977 to 2000. He was a bulwark against secular opposition to Catholicism.

Fr. Gerard Sloyan, a 1944 graduate of our Archdiocesan seminary who served as a priest of the Trenton Diocese for 75 years. He was known internationally for his work as a Scripture scholar. He lived to be 100.

Fr. Joseph A. O’Hare, S.J., a Bronx native known for his political astuteness, he was president of Fordham University (1984-2003) and a past editor of America magazine. New York City Mayor Ed Koch called on him to serve on the city’s Campaign Finance Board, which Koch created to try to attack corruption.

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, who had served as the United Kingdom’s chief rabbi and who was a prominent biblical scholar and an eloquent defender of marriage and the family. At a 2014 international conference on family organized by the Holy See, he got a standing ovation after he said that

The family, man, woman, and child, is not one lifestyle choice among many. It is the best means we have yet discovered for nurturing future generations and enabling children to grow in a matrix of stability and love. [When spouses turn to each other faithfully], we come as close as we will ever get to God himself, bringing new life into being, turning the prose of biology into the poetry of the human spirit, redeeming the darkness of the world by the radiance of love.

    (continued above)

Rabbi Sacks also took issue with—and sometimes debated—well-known atheists Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins.

Andrew Walther, head of EWTN’s news department and, before that, an important part of the Knights of Columbus’s communications and public policy outreach. He spoke forcefully on behalf of the world’s persecuted Christians.

Archbishop John Myers, our Archbishop from 2001 to 2016. He was a consistent defender of traditional Catholic teachings in the face of nearly continuous criticisms by the secular press, which took advantage of the extensive renovations to the house in Clinton that he used as an escape from the pressures of his duties and as his anticipated place of retirement—even though the expenses were met though private donations and not Archdiocesan funds. (The “PR” repercussions of all this were a disaster, but even if he had planned to retire to a U-Haul trailer, his opponents would probably have found other grounds on which to assail him, such as his defense of Catholic teachings on sexuality—which, come to think of it, did attract considerable opposition, especially by those who apparently would have preferred his predecessor to remain: Archbishop McCarrick.)

The few times I met Archbishop Myers, at the college seminary picnics he came to and at the meeting in his cathedral apartment he invited my ordination class to, I thought he was a kind and surprisingly shy person. There was a certain naivete about him too. Soon after he arrived in Newark , the Star-Ledger published an extensive article on him during which he let it be known that he was the co-author of the science fiction adventure novel Space Vulture, featuring a hero called Sky Hawk, which he wrote together with his boyhood friend Gary Wolf, creator of the Roger Rabbit film. (He wanted profits from the book to help his nieces and nephews pay their college bills.) I thought this disclosure could only expose him to ridicule by potential critics and wondered why he let it be known. He also collected Disney cartoon drawings used in the production of the studio’s films. I saw one hanging from his wall when my class visited his quarters. Requiescat in pace. Writers who passed away included:

    (From the Pastor’s Desk—continued)

Writers who passed away in 2020 included:

Mary Higgins Clark, greatly popular author of many mystery novels, which she began writing to support her family after the death of her husband. She was a practicing Catholic, who lived in Saddle River. She was very generous to the Church on several levels, including her willingness to speak about her faith in many forums.

Charles Portis, reclusive author of the western novel True Grit (twice turned into movies, starring John Wayne and then Jeff Bridges).

Clive Cussler, best-selling author of adventure

novels. Tomie dePaola, prolific author of children’s books,

which contained his own delightful illustrations. Many of his books had religious themes that drew from the Bible, the lives of saints, and Christian legends.

Rolf Hochhuth, author of The Deputy, a play that calumniated Pope Pius XII by accusing him of blame for the death of so many Jews in World War II, a vilification a number of other less talented writers have since repeated, despite clear and abundant evidence to the contrary. I am reminded of something Mark Twain, evidently no fan of the Latin proverb “De mortuis, nil nisi bonum” (“[Say] nothing but good about the dead”), said in his autobiography about Elisha Bliss, Jr., a publisher he had a difficult relationship with. After Twain described himself as someone disinclined to hold a grudge, he wrote that Bliss” has been dead a quarter of a century now … and if I could send him a fan I would.”

Pete Hamill, entertaining columnist and crusading journalist for several major New York papers.

John Le Carre , British writer whose novels on Cold War spies, especially The Spy Who Came in From the Cold (1963), gained both literary respect and a high volume of sales.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “..they fell down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treas-ures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh...”

    - Matthew 2:11

Notice the order of events in the Magi’s visit. First, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, as Stewards, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share!
