2 l Welcome to St. Mary & Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

+JMJ+ FROM THE PASTOR, FR. SMITH WEEK AHEAD CALENDAR

Dear Parishioners & Friends,

The Gospel of Mark has recently attracted some extraordinarily fine, and overdue, commentators. I’ve already shared with you the thoughts of one of them, Mary Healy. She is Catholic. Today, the valuable thoughts of a protestant scholar; again, supremely helpful as an overview of Mark.

“Why does Mark write? A good communicator is true to his message, artistic with his medium, and sensitive to his audience. Mark meets each of these qualifications, and particularly with his ability to fine-tune his writings on the wave-length of those for whom he writes. Scholars agree that Mark speaks in his Gospel to the needs of Roman Christians who are being subjected daily to the barbarous whims of Nero as he tries to use persecution and death as the final resolution for the Christian question. Nero fails, but Mark does not. Wasting no words, he begins his Gospel with the announcement that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the central truth upon which persecuted Christians can rely. Then, to substantiate this claim, Mark marshals the facts about Jesus as the serving and suffering Son of Man, and marches them to Peter’s confession, “You are the Christ.” (Mark 8:29) Or, if his readers number themselves among the heathen, Mark leaves no alternative but the admission of the Roman centurion at the Cross, “Truly, this Man was the Son of God!” (15:39) And then the Resurrection! Mark extols Jesus Christ, the risen Lord. As He has been the Lord who serves in the early chapters of the Gospel, and the Lord who suffers through the detailed account of His Passion, He is now the Lord who lives to give hope to the believers in Rome, that they too shall have the power to serve and be recipients of life beyond death if they are called to suffer. Mark’s message is complete. He has fulfilled his role as the first and most exciting communicator of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. To Roman Christians who are daily facing death, he sends a letter of compassion, precision, urgency, and hope. Whether he knows it or not, he also writes a Gospel for the ages, inviting us to study his message, confess the Christ, and receive the power of our resurrected Lord.” (Dr. David L. McKenna, Mark, Thos. Nelson Publishing, pp.16-17)

Amen, Dr. McKenna!

With Love in Christ ~ Fr. Dean M. Smith

4TH OF JULY FACTS The Declaration of Independence was penned by Thomas Jefferson and signed by 56 men representing 13 colonies.

One of the United States’ patriotic songs, “Yankee Doodle” was originally sung by British military officers prior to the Revolution as a means to mock the disorganized American colonists who fought alongside them during the French and Indian Wars.

France, Greece, Poland, Russia and several countries in South America used the Declaration of Independence as a beacon in their own struggles for freedom.
