Dear Padre

My parish has become so multicultural, I hardly recognize it anymore!

This is happening across the United States. Immigrant populations are joining parishes, bringing their culture and values with them. Years ago, Catholics strongly identified with a particular culture: Irish, Polish, Italian, for example. They built churches and sometimes found their own priests. They supported their own schools, teaching and praying in their own language. These ethnic parishes gave security to people in a new land. However, people died, went to war, or left the neighborhood, changing the parish population. But the parish didn’t die. Newcomers arrived, people who didn’t share the same background or language. Catholic means “universal.” It can never be identified exclusively with one particular parish church. A parish isn’t a country club with an unspoken charter written by those who have been there the longest. One may have loyalty to a parish, but this should be rooted in love of the gospel. When people experience change, they seek security. In parishes, however, security can lead to possessiveness. But the parish, as it exists, isn’t meant to threaten newcomers with its norms and customs. A word of encouragement from you, a long-standing parishioner, can help overcome these tensions. You’re encouraged to welcome these people and let them know that we all practice a faith that’s Catholic—in the fullest sense of the word. The Redemptorists

Good News! The Attitude and Faith of Humble Servants

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Habakkuk 1:2 - 3; 2:2 - 4; 2 Timothy 1:6 - 8, 13 14; Luke 17:5 - 10

What’s the difference between a believer and an atheist? What separates one who is indifferent to religion from a fervently religious person? Faith! To believe is no small thing and a tremendous gift. “Father, you are lucky you have faith!” an atheist friend once said to me. “I have tried often, but I just can’t bring myself to believe.” We are indeed lucky, because having faith in Jesus opens us to heaven, to life after death, to finding hope and sense in suffering. Faith allows us to trust something bigger than ourselves and to be at peace even when all around us is crazy. Faith and acceptance is the difference between deep, interior harmony and a radical frustration. We have received everything from God, which is why Jesus invites us to have the attitude of humble servants. He uses an example that’s clear to his listeners: a servant works hard all day, comes home, and prepares and serves dinner. In so doing, he is merely performing his job. Jesus isn’t endorsing the insensitive nature of the master but offering a model in the humble service of the domestic helper who faithfully fulfills his position. Since he receives everything from the master, he can only be grateful for the chance to work. Such is our position before God. We have no place being proud or demanding before God since all we have is from him: life, family, health, our talents. Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

and Funerals. The children will be trained to assist the priest at Mass.

at 718-821-2323. We are also seeking parents or guardians

who can attend and assist with the training.

MINISTERS OF PRAISE

Please join your prayers with our Ministers of Praise, our home-bound

Parishioners during October, which is dedicated to the Blessed Mother, by praying the Rosary.

Please pray the Rosary every day. There are pamphlets in the rear of the Church

to help you pray the Rosary. We also pray for all to respect each other in all walks of life

and especially in Church. Please remember to acknowledge

Jesus is in the tabernacle. Also that we should be respectful

of all worshippers before, during and after Mass and

other services.

And we pray for an end to the hatred, cruelty, and violence which is affecting our

country and the world.

Mary, Queen of Peace, Pray for us!

MUSIC MINISTRY NOTES CHILDREN’S CHOIR: Parents, please discuss with your children the ministry of participating in the Youth Choir at St. Pancras. Last season was a success and we would like to expand the choir.

Next Rehearsal is Thursday, October 10 at 3 pm The choir will next be singing on Nov. 3, at the 11 am Mass. Your child’s participation in the choir helps build confidence in many areas as well as singing.

ADULT CHOIR: We are looking for young adults and adults to join our choir. The choir sang for Christmas and Holy Week this past year. They did a great job and enjoyed being part of a group and appreciated the beauty of those liturgies! We invite all parishioners to think about joining our choir. Our goal is to have a choir to sing weekly at the 11 am Sunday Mass. If you cannot commit to every week, perhaps you will consider joining us for the Christmas and Holy Week Liturgies. Please see Mr. Fierro after Mass to discuss joining either choir.

WE NEED YOU!

CUB SCOUTS

The Cub Scouts will meet on Wednesday, October 9 at 6:45 pm in Pfeifer Hall. Scouting is a great way for

your child to learn skills which will carry into adulthood.

Bring your son to a meeting!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Sometimes human relationships go awry, but Christ’s choice for us is irrevocable. In marriage celebrations, the Church always recalls God’s faithfulness to help prepare married couples for enduring the inevitable rough spots. The Byzantine liturgy does this by adorning the couple with crowns that remind them of the martyr’s crown. The couple therefore takes on a vocation of witnessing to the sacredness of life in all of its suffering and joy, and of keeping their eyes fixed on the banquet of heaven. In Eastern theology, people have a liturgical vocation to give God praise, and marriage fits within that plan. It is not so much saying prayers that counts, but becoming prayer. Interestingly, in this liturgy the couple never utters a word other than joining in the community’s chants; there are no marriage vows as such. There is therefore not a hint of our Western Christian sense that marriage is a legal contract. Rather, it is all about living out one’s baptismal vocation, embracing the cross, pouring oneself out in love, and opening to the grace of the Holy Spirit. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
