Applied psychology
As the college student rang the doorbell and delivered the pizza, the man who answered growled, “What’s the usual tip?”
“Well, sir,” the student replied, “this is my first delivery, but the other guys said that if I got a dollar out of you, I’d be doing great.”
“That so?” grunted the customer. “Well, in that case, here’s ten bucks.”
Thank you, sir,” the grateful student said, taking the bill. “This will be a big help at school.”
“By the way,” the customer asked, “what are you studying?”
“Applied psychology.”
This psychology student has learned not just to see what people do but why they do it– and what will make them act differ-
ently. Jesus, in today’s Gospel, prays that we will do the same. He calls us to see the truth in its totality– not just to recognize a
series of facts but to understand how those facts connect to reveal reality and truth. Truth can be very difficult to face and accept:
resorting to obfuscation, rationalization and denial are much easier than facing the truth about our beliefs, our attitudes, our val-
ues, our dreams. The Risen Christ challenges us not to approach truth in terms of wins and losses or of power or of the comfort of
convention, but to approach truth as where and how God is present in our lives and our world. To be a person of authentic faith
means to face and seek out the truth– regardless of our doubts and cynicism and fear. To be “consecrated in the truth” begins
with embracing the Spirit of God: the wisdom, the wholeness, the love of God who is the first and last and constant reality.
Dear Friends,
Christ is risen! Indeed He is risen!
Today we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. His ascension is both an end and a beginning. The resurrection ap-pearances of Jesus are at an end; His revelation of the Kingdom of God is complete; the promise of the Messiah is fulfilled. Now begins the work of His disciples to teach what they have learned and to share what they have witnessed. It was not a promising start. Like any beginning or transition in life, it is a moment of great uncertainty, confusion and fear. Jesus places His church in the hands of a company of illiterate, backward fishermen and otherwise unremarkable people and yet what began with those sim-ple followers of Jesus has grown and born fruit through the centuries to this parish family of ours today. The Church Jesus leaves to them is rooted not in buildings, wealth or systems of theology but faith nurtured in the human heart, a faith centered in prayer, wisdom and trust. On the mountain of the ascension, Jesus calls all of us to be His witnesses, to tells others about the good that God has worked in the Easter mystery. You and I are given a task and the work of the Risen Lord to go and make disciples. This is our mission. This is our story. May each of us together as Church fulfill the mission and vision Jesus entrusts to us young and old.
During the month of May, the Church remembers Mary, our blessed Mother. Please come to church a bit earlier and pray the rosary with us.
Today is Mother’s Day, a special Mother’s Day for all mothers and grandmothers. We remember in our prayers those women who have been like mothers to so many, those unable to become mothers, mothers who have lost children, and mothers separated from us by distances, divisions or death. Mary Mother of the Church, pray for us! In celebration of Mother’s Day, we are making available carnations for $1.00, which can be given to your moms, placed at the Blessed Mother Shrine in church, or taken to the cemetery. All proceeds will be given to the Mahoning County Right to Life.
Our celebrations of Confirmation and First Communion were very joy filled expressions of our Catholic faith. May God pro-tect and guide our young people on their journey through life.
I would like to thank Ms. Nicole Novotny for her leadership in our parish community. Nicole has been the CCD Principal for three years and a member of Youth Ministry Team, Parish Staff, Bulletin Editor and Publishing Team. Nicole’s faith, love and enthusiasm have been a blessing to us. We pray that as she continues her studies and new career, she will take with her our prayers, friendship and love. Thank you, Nicole.
As we begin our celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Diocese of Youngstown, Bishop Murry has asked that we will pray the prayer for vocations. We at St. Patrick will pray this prayer before our weekend Eucharistic celebrations, as well as con-tinue to take the vocation cross to our homes. May God bless our local Catholic Diocese, our parish, homes and hearts as fruitful ground for the gift of vocations.
May God bless us all, Fr. Mike

How strong is your faith? When you have an opportunity to either defend or clarify a question about our Catholic faith, do you do it? Or, do you remain silent so that others don’t think you are weird? Pray for the courage to be strong in all circumstances and to share your witness with others.
Prayer Requests Listed below are members of our Parish Family who have requested our prayers. If you are seeking prayers for relatives and/or friends who are not members of our parish family, please call the Parish House or email Kathy at [email protected]. ** Names remain on the prayer list at the request of parishioners for three months. !"#$%&"'()*+","-#.%-* Deacon John’s Focus
on Stewardship
Stewardship - One Size Doesn’t Fit All
When Deacon John requested we write a
letter of Stewardship, we agreed, but I have to
tell you it isn’t necessarily something that comes easily or is comfortable for us to do. We love helping our Parish and those in need,
but we are not doing it to impress others or to boast. “One size doesn’t fit all.” We each have our own way of helping others and spreading our time, talent and treasures. We do appreciate stewardship done by
everyone, knowing we are all doing the best we can. We are Al and Marcia Sauline. Many of you know Al from when he held various elective offices, including City Mayor. Al and I
met in 1969, while he was an usher at the 12:55 Mass (referred to as
“the 5 to 1 Mass”) here at St. Patrick’s Church. I loved that Al didn’t hesitate to volunteer as an usher and assist his Parish whenever and
wherever needed. Although I wasn’t Catholic, every Sunday we at-
tended Mass and then joined his family for the traditional Italian Sun-day pasta dinner, which I loved! I was so impressed by the Mass and
St. Patrick’s Parish family that we agreed to be married here in 1971 and have been active members ever since! We are also blessed with a
son, Al III, who is an Attorney living in Florida and has continued the family tradition of Stewardship in the Panama City Beach area. Stewardship is not a one size fits all. Jesus stresses the impor-
tance of “What you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me.” (Matthew 25:40) However, the manner you give back to God is only known to you and God. He has blessed each of us in unique ways
and each of us can be good Stewards according to our unique talents,
treasure and time. The key here is to contribute what you can, however you can. Only you and God know what you truly have to give. Re-
member, a small task done in obedience to God is a big accomplish-
ment! One of our favorite readings is read annually at the Ash Wednes-
day Mass. We enjoy the entire reading, but just a portion of it is, “1Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may
see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.” and another portion “…4so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.” (Matthew
6:1-4) We have always strongly believed in helping our Parish and those in need; however our greatest joy comes from anonymously help-ing those in need. All that matters to us is that God knows who we’ve
helped and how. Although that is our favorite way to be a good stew-
ard, it is not to say we are not involved and visible in our Parish as well. To put our Stewardship in writing feels like boasting, but how
can we talk about Stewardship and not share the ways we have been
Stewards? As stated earlier, Al has been an Usher since the 60s. He has
also worked the Parish Festival for most of our married life, including Co-chairing the Festival for 8 straight years! Al has served on various
Parish committees and was awarded the 2008 Difference Maker’s Per-
son of the Year by Father Tim’s Difference Makers. I also have worked the Parish Festival for most of our married life, was the Foun-
der of the Chinese Auction Booth (now Basket Raffle) and chaired it for 8 years. I served on Parish Council, am a Lector at 11:00 Mass, a Leader of Children’s Liturgy of the Word, a member of our Prayer
Chain since its inception, and volunteered in the Parish office from
2005–2015. Together Al and I have decorated the church for holidays, baked for our Parish Fish Frys and various Parish festivities, worked
Super Bingo and participated in Fr. Tim’s Difference Makers. We also
served for over five years as a Sponsor Couple to many wonderful young couples getting married.
We have been blessed and try to give back every day. It is an honor and a privilege to be active Stewards at St. Patrick’s Parish.
Last, but not least, remember God knows your heart and your
assets. One size doesn’t fit all, but to whom much is given, much is expected.
Don’t Forget Your 2018 Bishop’s Appeal!
Papal Prayer Intention Pray with Pope Francis! The Holy Father’s universal prayer intention for May 2018 is “That the lay faithful may
fulfill their specific mission, by responding with creativity
to the challenges that face the world today.”

Help me guide them
and teach them through example
to lead lives of wisdom
and strong, loving faith.
Please let them learn
to serve you always
in though and deed.
And remind me, Lord,

Thanks to You Our Fish Fry
Was a Great Success Thank you to all those who worked at the fish fry, donated des-serts, or attended and bought a deli-cious meal. A fantastic time was had by all working together to make the 2018 fish fry a huge success. The profit after all expenses were paid was $27,434.00 and will be used to offset the cost of the new lighting in the church. Plans for the 2019 fish fry have already been discussed and we welcome any feedback. We appreciate everyone who had a hand in making this fund-raiser such a huge success.
