Healing and Reconnecting the Isolated

Leprosy is a dreaded disease in biblical times. The first reading

this Sunday from Leviticus, gives various prescriptions in

dealing with the lepers. Thus, “the man who bears the sore of

leprosy shall keep his garments rent and his head bare… He

shall cry out unclean, unclean...he shall dwell apart, making

his abode outside the camp”.(Lv 13:45-46).

Leprosy is the greatest “isolator” of all time. The lepers were

considered the “living dead”. In 1904, the Civil Governor of the

Philippine Islands, Hon. Luke E. Wright, promulgated Executive

Order 35, creating the “isolated island” of Culion in Palawan as

a Leper Colony. They are physically isolated so as not to

contaminate the healthy people. But, there is a twist that

happened in our Gospel today. There is a touching humility in

the Leper’s request to Jesus, “If you want to, you can cure me.”

This appeal was met with compassion by Jesus, who as St.

Mark comments, was moved with pity. Jesus touches the man

physically, something that no one would dare do in that time.

So profound is Jesus’ compassion that he risks contamination

and being made unclean; he touches the man and heals him.

Today, leprosy in the Gospel, can be applied to something

other than physical disease. Spiritual writers would call this

“Leprosy of the Soul”. Sin is a kind of social leprosy. It isolates

us from God and from other people. What was in the past

called confession, is now called the sacrament of

RECONCILIATION. This is the vehicle that would bring us

healing and reconnection to God and to one another. As sins

isolate us from God and from one another, the sacrament

brings us back to God and to one another. There is an

enduring need for reconciliation, if we want to love God above

all, and our neighbors as ourselves. This is the task Christ set

for us when he said, “Do this, and you will live.” (Luke 10:28)

HB 54: DOCTOR PRESCRIBED SUICIDE

Advances in the Alaska Legislature

House Bill 54 a serious threat to the vulnerable by Rep. Harriet

Drummond, which was left “heard and held” at an April 6 hearing

in the House Health & Social Services Committee (HSS) last year,

with no vote of the committee-- was brought up again on short

notice on January 30. This time it was voted out of the committee

on a 3-2 vote, with two members making no recommendation.

(D-Anchorage) and Jennifer Johnston (R-So. Anchorage)

Kindergarteners are learning all about

Alaskan animals. This week we have been

presenting a report, complete with costumes,

on an Alaskan animal. Kindergarteners have

turned into eagles, moose and King Crab to

mention a few. It has been a fun week

learning all the facts about our animals.

Sarah Afoa, Kindergarten

First graders just finished celebrating the 100th day of

school. We did a science prediction of how full a glass would be

with 100 drops of water in it. We made patterns with 100

numbers. We even dressed ourselves up to look 100 years

old. Check out our “old” photographs on the hallway bulletin

board!

Lisa Orizotti, First grade

Students are getting creative this week and

writing about an animal at the zoo that is heart

shaped. They will create an art project to go along

with their writing. I can’t wait to see which animals

look the most heart shaped. Which would you pick?

Kristin Starr, Second grade

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, love is in the air at

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School. Third graders shared 100

reasons why they love our school. Check out the bulletin board

in the church hallway that is filled with a 100 hearts full of love

for our school. Third graders are also working on a paper to

describe their life as a water drop traveling through the water

cycle. Science is pouring all around us in the classroom.

Maggie McConkey, Third grade

4th graders are learning about the Sacraments of Christian

Initiation. This week the focus was on what takes place during

the Rite of Confirmation. The students loved talking about their

own baptisms and how Confirmation will unite them more fully

with Christ and members of the Church. They also learned

about the use of Sacred Chrism by the bishop during

Confirmation. Father Patrick recently showed the students

where the sacred vessels are kept on the church altar in the

ambry.

Laura McLaughlin, Fourth grade

The 6th grade class just completed this year’s

celebration of Catholic schools week. As a

school, the student talent show, a Spelling

Bee, occupational talks for the older students,

and a board game afternoon for the older

students. The students enjoyed the diversity of activities and it

served to break up the student’s normal routine. The talent

show included all types of acts from singing, to playing musical

instruments and dancing. The school Spelling Bee was won this

year by 6th grader, Makaylen King. The runner-up was 6th grader,

Karolina Rzeszut; the whole class was proud of both of

them. The class would also like to congratulate all those who

participated in this year’s Spelling Bee and for making it a

success. Academically, the students are learning about the

Order of Operations in math, indefinite pronouns in language

arts, elements in science and Rome in social studies.

Avivara Update: With the death of Gustavo Valle, a co-founder of

Avivara, questions arose as to the future of this organization

dedicated to helping educate children of Guatemala. To quote

Gary Teale, the Executive Director, “Our answer to that question

is that Gustavo worked too hard over the last ten years to have

us leave behind the many people whose lives he has touched.”

Changes had been in the works to allow for growth and these will

provide the platform for Avivara to continue.
