The Third Sunday of Advent – a time to rejoice and be hopeful.
Today is the Third Sunday of Advent and we are at the mid-point of our Advent journey. In keeping with the season, we should be anxiously ready and awaiting the coming of our Savior, not only as an anniversary of His birth but also when He comes again in glory. Being vigilant and watchful whilst waiting in expectation can be tiring, especially when living in a society and a time that is full of distraction. Listening to the news can be very disheartening and challenging to our anticipation of the coming of Jesus. Even our celebration of the birth of Jesus in the simplest of mangers is overshadowed by commercialism and splendor. With all the difficulties in the world, our faith is tested. The Church understands our weariness, and today it offers us encouragement by naming the Third Sunday of Advent “Gaudete Sunday,” that is, in English, “Rejoice Sunday.”
The common theme running through today’s readings is one of joy and encouragement. They call for patience in awaiting the rebirth of Jesus in our hearts and lives, whilst leaving us with a message of hope. The prophet Isaiah, in the first reading, encourages the exiled Jews in Babylon to rejoice and live in hope because their God is going to liberate them from slavery and lead them safely to their homeland where they can rebuild the Temple and serve their God once more as His chosen people. In the second reading, James the Apostle encourages the early Christians to rejoice and wait with patience for the imminent second coming of Jesus. Like Isaiah, James tries to show his Christian community that what they have been hoping for is already happening. Just as the prophets believed that what they were proclaiming was already happening, the Christians needed to behave as though the risen Jesus were already influencing their lives. James uses the analogy of a farmer who must wait patiently for the ground to yield its fruit. In the same way, we must trust that God is bringing abundance into, and out of, our lives, although we cannot see it yet. James however warns the people that if anyone among them has neglected his duties to God, he needs to listen now to the warning and put his conscience and his life right with God because “The Judge is standing before the gates!”. Finally, in the Gospel reading, Jesus encourages John the Baptist whilst in prison to rejoice by casting away his doubts about the Messiah and simply accepting Jesus’ healing and preaching ministry as the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecy of Isaiah. The response of Jesus invites John and his followers to go beyond their expectations of a triumphant Messiah with all His mighty and honor, and to bring the message of hope and love, to bring the good news to the poor and the suffering.
Like John, who appears to have some doubts about Jesus being the Messiah, we too may go through times of desolation when we have doubts about Jesus and the his being present in our lives, let alone his second coming. These doubts may be more prevalent when we experience trials and challenges in life. We may question God’s power ask ourselves why God does not clean up the evils in our society. How can we rejoice when there is so much poverty and homeless people? Society feeds our instant gratification, and so when we do not get a response from God in regards to our needs, we tend to turn away from God. During these remaining weeks of Advent, let us do as Matthew challenges us and reflect on what we are really expecting at Christmas. Let us ask ourselves the question “who is the Jesus we are expecting, and are we ready to follow the way that he prepares for us?” Let us spend the remainder of this Advent season preparing ‘our way’ before the Lord comes this Christmas, remembering always to keep Jesus first in our lives, others second, and ourselves last. Let us make sure that our Christmas preparations revolve around the nativity scene and not the activity scene. For those of us always on the go, let us go slowly. Christmas is not about going fast and doing much, but about turning to the heart and doing everything with love.

Simbang Gabi 2019
St. Augustine Church, under the coordination of the parish’s Filipino-American community, cordially invites you to come as one parish community and celebrate Simbang Gabi on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 7:00 PM. Simbang Gabi is a traditional Pilipino Advent novena of masses that starts on December 16th and culminates on Christmas Eve. Although our parish celebrates only one of these masses, anyone who wants to complete the novena may attend the other masses hosted by our neighboring parishes. After the mass, everyone is invited to join the reception hosted by the Fil-Am volunteers and friends in the Parish Hall.

15 de diciembre de 2019 Tercer Domingo de Adviento
El tercer domingo de Adviento, un tiempo para regocijarse y tener esperanza.
Hoy es el tercer domingo de Adviento y estamos en el punto medio de nuestro viaje de Adviento. De acuerdo con la temporada, debemos estar ansiosamente listos y esperando la venida de nuestro Salvador, no solo como aniversario de su nacimiento, sino también cuando venga de nuevo en gloria. Estar atento y vigilante mientras espera con expectación puede ser agotador, especialmente cuando vive en una sociedad y en un momento lleno de distracciones. Escuchar las noticias puede ser muy desalentador y desafiante para nuestra anticipación de la venida de Jesús. Incluso nuestra celebración del nacimiento de Jesús en el más simple de los pesebres se ve ensombrecida por el comercialismo y el esplendor. Con todas las dificultades del mundo, nuestra fe se pone a prueba. La Iglesia comprende nuestro cansancio, y hoy nos anima al nombrar el Tercer Domingo de Adviento "Domingo de Gaudete", es decir, en inglés, "Domingo de alegría".
El tema común que se encuentra en las lecturas de hoy es uno de alegría y aliento. Nos piden paciencia para esperar el renacimiento de Jesús en nuestros corazones y vidas, mientras nos dejan un mensaje de esperanza. El profeta Isaías, en la primera lectura, alienta a los judíos exiliados en Babilonia a regocijarse y vivir con esperanza porque su Dios los liberará de la esclavitud y los guiará a salvo a su tierra natal donde pueden reconstruir el Templo y servir a su Dios una vez más como su pueblo elegido. En la segunda lectura, el Apóstol Santiago anima a los primeros cristianos a alegrarse y esperar con paciencia la inminente segunda venida de Jesús. Al igual que Isaías,Santiago intenta mostrar a su comunidad cristiana que lo que habían estado esperando y que ya está sucediendo. Así como los profetas creían que lo que estaban proclamando ya estaba sucediendo, los cristianos debían comportarse como si el Jesús resucitado ya estuviera influyendo en sus vidas. Santiago usa la analogía de un granjero que debe esperar pacientemente a que el suelo produzca su fruto. De la misma manera, debemos confiar en que Dios está trayendo abundancia dentro y fuera de nuestras vidas, aunque todavía no podemos verlo. Sin embargo, Santiago advierte a la gente que si alguno de ellos ha descuidado sus deberes con Dios, debe escuchar ahora la advertencia y poner su conciencia y su vida en paz con Dios porque "¡El juez está de pie ante las puertas!". Finalmente, en la lectura del Evangelio, Jesús anima a Juan el Bautista mientras está en prisión a alegrarse desechando sus dudas sobre el Mesías y simplemente aceptando el ministerio de curación y predicación de Jesús como el cumplimiento de la profecía mesiánica de Isaías. La respuesta de Jesús invita a Juan y a sus seguidores a ir más allá de sus expectativas de un Mesías triunfante con toda su fuerza y honor, y para llevar el mensaje de esperanza y amor, para llevar las buenas nuevas a los pobres y los que sufren.
Al igual que Juan, quien parece tener algunas dudas acerca de que Jesús sea el Mesías, nosotros también podemos pasar por momentos de desolación cuando tenemos dudas sobre Jesús y su presencia en nuestras vidas, y mucho menos su segunda venida. Estas dudas pueden ser más frecuentes cuando experimentamos pruebas y desafíos en la vida. Podemos cuestionar el poder de Dios y preguntarnos por qué Dios no limpia los males en nuestra sociedad. ¿Cómo podemos alegrarnos cuando hay tanta pobreza y personas sin hogar? La sociedad alimenta nuestra gratificación instantánea y, por lo tanto, cuando no recibimos una respuesta de Dios con respecto a nuestras necesidades, tendemos a alejarnos de Dios. Durante las semanas restantes de Adviento, hagamos lo que Mateo nos desafía y reflexionemos sobre lo que realmente esperamos en Navidad. Hagámonos a nosotros mismos la pregunta "¿quién es el Jesús que estamos esperando y estamos preparados para seguir el camino que él nos prepara?". Pasemos el resto de esta temporada de Adviento preparando "nuestro camino" antes de que el Señor venga esta Navidad. , recordando siempre mantener a Jesús primero en nuestras vidas, a otros en segundo lugar y a nosotros mismos en último lugar. Asegurémonos de que nuestros preparativos navideños giran en torno al Belén y no a la actividad. Para nosotros que estamos siempre en movimiento, vamos lentamente. La Navidad no se trata de ir rápido y hacer mucho, sino de volverse al corazón y hacer todo con amor.
