Gaudete! Rejoice at What’s Coming in 2020
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The traditional name for the Third Sunday of Advent comes from the first word in
the Latin Entrance Antiphon for this Sunday’s Mass from St. Paul: Rejoice in the Lord
always; again I say, rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near (Phil 4:4-5). The rose-colored
candle is lit, and flowers adorn the altar. Rose is the color that appears when purple
[of Advent] is mingled with the white [of Christmas]. Indeed, this is a joyful time of
year despite cold, misty weather in Texas, because Christmas is not far off!
The Year of Our Lord 2019 has been a heavy year for our parish. Therefore, I
wanted to announce something that would help my parishioners rejoice as we get
closer to the Christmas Season. I am declaring the Year 2020 a Year of Jubilee to
take a break from major fundraisers. Most parishioners are paying their pledges
they made in 2018, which allows us to make the necessary improvements to our Edu-
cation & Ministry Center (SEEM, i.e., South Campus) and to the parking lots at both
campuses. The committees of the Carnival and Gala have worked hard these past
years and could use a break. A year of jubilee (relax) is also time for us to get used to
having two campuses and focus on spiritual growth. Please know of my gratitude for
what all of you do — not just to make our parish run by paying our bills and providing
the basic needs of parish life — but for your commitment to extending the reign of
Christ here in Athens and beyond. Rejoice!

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:
El nombre tradicional para el Tercer Domingo de Adviento proviene de la primera
palabra en la Antífona de entrada en latín para la misa de este domingo en San
Pablo: Regocíjate siempre en el Señor; De nuevo digo, regocijate. De hecho, el Se-
ñor está cerca (Filipenses 4: 4-5). La vela de color rosa se enciende y las flores
adornan el altar. Rosa es el color que aparece cuando el púrpura [de Adviento] se
mezcla con el blanco [de Navidad]. De hecho, esta es una época alegre del año a
pesar del clima frío y brumoso en Texas, ¡porque la Navidad no está lejos!
El Año de Nuestro Señor 2019 ha sido un año pesado para nuestra parroquia. Por
lo tanto, quería anunciar algo que ayudaría a mis feligreses a alegrarse a medida
que nos acercamos a la temporada navideña. Declaro que el año 2020 es un año
de jubileo para tomar un descanso de las principales recaudaciones de fon-
dos. La mayoría de los feligreses están pagando las promesas que hicieron en
2018, lo que nos permite realizar las mejoras necesarias en nuestro Centro de Edu-
cación y Ministerio (SEEM, es decir, Campus Sur) y en los estacionamientos en am-
