Thank you in advance for your generosity to this fund.

MISSION APPEAL THE WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 21-22

Father Librado L. Baluarte shall make the appeal on behalf of the Most Reverend Arturo M. Bastes, SVD, DD, Bishop of Sorsogon, Philippines The proceeds of our mission appeal for the Diocese of Sorsogon in the Philippines shall be used for the following projects: 1. For the education of our 126 seminarians (74 in High School, 43 in College, 9 in Theology). Most parents of these young boys are poor and cannot afford to give them a priestly education, which has become more costly through the years. The Province of Sorsogon is one of the poorest in the region of Bicol, which is often hit by natural calamities such as typhoons (hurricanes) and volcanic eruptions; 2. For our pastoral programs which focus on the formation of our lay men and women, who are leaders in the Village Chapel Pastoral Councils. These lay leaders need continuing training so that they can effectively help the Parish Priests in the implementation of the Diocesan Ecclesial and Evangelization Program (DEEP), which is intended for the economic, political, cultural and religious development of the people. We look forward to meeting Father Baluarte and ask that you be generous to his mission. Thank you.

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: Rejoice!”

St. Catherine of Siena Parish Crescent, PA

ATTITUDE CHANGE Today’s readings ask us to re-think our attitudes and ways. The passage from the book of Wisdom reminds us that, when it comes to understanding, even the wisest person barely scrapes the surface of things. In Paul’s provocative little letter to Philemon, the apostle praises Philemon for his understanding of the social order—which included slavery—and for his good treatment of Onesimus. Then Paul goes on to drop his bombshell. He tells Philemon that One-simus is now a Christian and should be treated as such—as a brother, an equal. What was Philemon to think? Today’s Gospel tells us that if we are to follow Jesus, we must do some serious planning. Then, once all our planning is complete, we have to be will-ing to accept the fact that our plans are never enough. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

To register or for further information, please call Sr. Margie at 724-375-7626. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in drawing persons with disabilities into full celebration. Now it is generally accepted that wor-ship places need accommodations such as ramps or elevators, large-print materials for those who are sight-impaired, and perhaps even an assisted hear-ing system or signing in American Sign Language. American Sign Language is not merely English translated into movement, but a distinct language with its own grammar, syntax (word order), and vo-cabulary. For this reason, the American Catholic bishops have approved American Sign Language (ASL) as an official language of the liturgy. Celebrating liturgy in our own language (the vernacular) means that liturgy must be accessible to all languages and cultures. The fact that Mass is celebrated this weekend in some places in total si-lence, but with the full participation of deaf people praising God in the movements of their hands, and sometimes even with a priest who is deaf, is nothing less than the Church being faithful to the image of Jesus, who made the deaf hear and the mute speak. Remember too that deafness is an invisible disabil-ity, and that there may well be people in your parish who are quietly yearning for Mass to be signed for them in ASL.—James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: Rejoice!”

The Pastor’s Corner………...Lou Vallone

Well, I was just about ready for summer to start, to slow things down a little and begin to enjoy the sunshiny days and balmy nights, to kick back and laze along like I remembered things used to be when I was a kid and school was out. And then - BAM! - I realized that school has been in session for two whole weeks already! Ironically, there was an item in the news about a mother who is suing a school system because her child is doing math at a level of proficiency below his grade. She claims that he was not taught properly, and therefore the educational structure failed by denying him his rights. Education is not a consumer product. Everyone who hands over his $1.99 gets exactly the same gallon of milk: pasteurized, homogenized, quality controlled. But education is a process of communication that is as much formational as it is informational, and the success of the system depends upon interaction: there must be a teacher, but there must also be a learner. If either one falls short of his or her role, then there is no education. In football, a kicker's career is entirely up to himself. Every time he kicks the ball on a field goal attempt correctly, exactly, he scores his 3 points. If it does not go through the uprights, he has no one to blame but himself. On the other hand, a quarterback can throw perfect spiraling bullet passes all game long, but if no receiver manages to catch that pass in the end zone - no touchdown. It takes the passer and the receiver both to do their jobs properly to put 6 points on the board. All of the Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh are fortunate in having some of the finest "quarterbacks" in the educational league. The clergy, religious and laity of the administrations and faculties who staff the elementary and secondary schools are all experts in their fields: finely skilled and trained to provide the best opportunities for our children to formationally grow in wisdom, age, grace, knowledge and maturity. These educators are also extremely personally dedicated to their profession,

expending time and energy above and beyond what anyone has a right to expect, considering the meager monetary compensation they receive. They are teachers and they teach as well as anyone humanly can. The only question is whether our children are students. And that question can only be answered by each child individually (and by the parents!) Our educational quarterbacks begin another academic year of throwing touchdown passes every time. Let us keep our children in our prayers that God will give each and every one of them the grace to be good receivers and to score as high as possible with their lives.
