Valerian Gonsalves THE NEW COVE- NANT Today’s first reading is an enor- mously important passage, not only in the history of the Jewish people, but also for us as disci- ples of Jesus, who see in it a foreshadowing of the Christian dis- pensation. The prophet announces that God has chosen to forgive the people, and that as a sign of divine forgiveness a new covenant will be established. Contrasting the new covenant with the one made with Moses on Mount Sinai, Jeremiah says that the new covenant will be written on the people’s hearts rather than on tablets of stone. No longer will the communi- ty’s tradition be the sole bearer of the covenant; hence- forth, God will speak directly and personally to each individual, forgiving sin and calling for a return to God in faithfulness. No longer will mere outward compli- ance with the dictates of the Law suffice; henceforth, God asks for an obedience that springs from the depths of one’s heart. Precisely that kind of obedience is highlighted in today’s second reading, where the author of the Let- ter to the Hebrews describes Jesus as the mediator of the new covenant whose obe- dience has made him the source of salvation for all who, in turn, obey him.

THE NEW COVE-NANT Today’s first reading is an enor-mously important passage, not only in the history of the Jewish people, but also for us as disci-ples of Jesus, who see in it a foreshadowing of the Christian dis-pensation. No longer will the communi-ty’s tradition be the sole bearer of the covenant; hence-forth, God will speak directly and personally to each individual, forgiving sin and calling for a return to God in faithfulness. No longer will mere outward compli-ance with the dictates of the Law suffice; henceforth, God asks for an obedience that springs from the depths of one’s heart. Precisely that kind of obedience is highlighted in today’s second reading, where the author of the Let-ter to the Hebrews describes Jesus as the mediator of the new covenant whose obe-dience has made him the source of salvation for all who, in turn, obey him.

Parking Lot Project

Improvement Continues! We are working toward asphalting the gravel side of the St. Elizabeth parking lot as well as the outlet road which will better accommodate our larger congregation size and ease traffic when our lake visiting parishioners join us. This endeavor is estimated to cost $27,964.00. Blue envelopes marked Parking Lot Project are available in the vestibule or you may also donate online. As always, we are sincerely grateful for your support of our parish, Fr. Valley and the Finance Council

Consecration to St. Joseph In his apostolic letter, Patris Corde, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, praises St. Joseph and invites us to "increase our love for this great saint to encourage us to implore his intercession and

to imitate his virtues and his zeal". It is with gratitude and warmth that the Diocese of Tulsa accepts this invitation as our Church in eastern Oklahoma is dedicated tot he Holy Family -- Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Therefore, in order to promote a devotion to St. Joseph and to in-crease our efforts to bring Christ to eastern Oklahoma, Bishop Da-vid Konderla will consecrate the Diocese to St. Joseph on March 19th at Holy Family Cathedral at 6pm. LENT - 40 DAYS OF RE-FLECTION & PREPARA-TION FOR JESUS (Feb 17 - Apr 4) Lent is a liturgical season preced-ing Holy Week and Easter. The Catholic Church designates these forty days as a time of prepara-tion for the greatest of liturgical solemnities, Easter, the celebra-tion of the Resurrection of Jesus, and His victory over evil, sin, and death. Lenten preparation should con-sist of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer in repentance of sins and for deeper conversion of the soul. Through these practices, we may arrive at Holy Week spiritually prepared to walk with Jesus through his suffering and death. The Church encourages the faith-ful to fast not only from food and drink but also from pride, injus-tice, and insensitivity to the mis-eries of others. Almsgiving should not merely consist of sharing material wealth but should also constitute an attitude of charity toward others. Finally, only through an openness to God in prayer can we experience true conversion as God makes our hearts more understanding and full of charity, as charity is the cornerstone of all Lenten resolu-tions.
