Fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time July 12, 2020

WE OFFER OUR PRAYERS for members of our Collaborative who are ill,

remembering especially: Carmen, Karen, Ben, Chrissy, Jeremiah, Sandy, Christopher, Kim, Paula, Fred, Bernie, James,

Gretchen, David, Alice, John, P.J., Maryellen and Jane

Please continue to keep all those affected by the coronavirus, their families, and our health care workers in your prayers.

KINDLY REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS

Malcom Grandy, Jr. Henry “Harry” Clark

Please remember the members of our Collaborative who have gone home to God. May their souls, and the souls of all our faithful departed share in the fullness

of life and peace with God.

MASS INTENTIONS Since the suspension of public Masses in the Archdiocese of Boston began on March 14, we have been unable to take new scheduled Mass intentions. All previously scheduled Mass intentions have been, and will continue to be, remembered by Fr. Jim, Fr. Robert, and Fr. David at the Masses they offer privately. While we can now begin to offer a limited number of public Masses, the reality is that the Mass schedule will be subject to change, even from week to week, for the foreseeable future. As such, all public Masses at the St. John-St. Paul Collaborative are being offered at this time for our parishes and for those who have lost their lives to COVID-19. Mass cards and Mass intentions are still available, and will be remembered at the Masses that our priests offer privately. We will resume taking scheduled Mass intentions once we reach a point in time when we can be confident that our public Mass schedule will continue without disruption.

SUMMER OUTDOOR MASS We are happy to announce that the St. John-St. Paul Collaborative will continue with a limited schedule of outdoor Masses on the parish lawns for the summer. Our plan for the remainder of the summer (barring any unforeseen circumstances) is to keep the current sched-ule of Saturday 4pm at St. Paul Church and Sunday 9am and 11am at St. John Church. Reservations are re-quired for all Masses. Please visit our website for the Reservations page as well as Outdoor Mass Guidelines. Please remember that the dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation remains in place, and will continue for the foreseeable future. A recorded Mass will be provided each weekend for those at home. Daily Mass has not resumed and our churches remain closed at this time.

SCHEDULED HOURS FOR THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

As you know, our regular Saturday afternoon hours for the Sacrament of Reconciliation were suspended, along with public Masses, in March. Since that time, the Sacrament has been available by appointment. We are happy to announce that we have now begun offering scheduled hours for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the Collaborative. Scheduled times for Confession are: Saturdays at St. John: 1:00 - 2:30pm Wednesdays at St. Paul: 7:00 - 8:00pm To allow for both face-to-face and anonymous Confession while maintaining proper social distancing, Confessions will take place at St. Paul in the sacristy room and at St. John in the chapel sacristy room (on the right just before the chapel on the lower level of the church.) There will be signage to direct you where to go and where to wait. This schedule will remain in place for the foreseeable future, and the Sacrament will continue to be available by appointment (please call either parish office to arrange.) If you have any questions, please send an email to [email protected] or call either parish office during business hours.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION We recently met with our Parent Advisory Board and decided to wait until August to make any decisions about our schedule, the platform for lessons, and the

corresponding registration process for all of our programs. We feel these decisions will be best made when more directives are put in place and the schools establish a working model for the fall. We know that many families are away for the summer and often not as vigilant with email, but we ask that in this ever-changing landscape, you bear with us and look for information in early August and register as promptly as possible. We will have a condensed timeframe in which to prepare our program, and accurate registration numbers will be vital to creating a successful program. The ceremonies for the sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion continue to remain on hold for now, but they remain high on our list of priorities. We will continue to communicate with you as more information becomes available. We sincerely appreciate your patience and support during this tumultuous time.

LAUDATO SI CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME.

In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis speaks of our moral imperative for all of God’s creation. Care of Our Common Home calls us to assess the impact our actions and personal decisions have on the world around us. Everything we do has a ripple effect. Are there

things we are doing that create an undesirable ripple? To make a positive impact on the environment, we need not focus on the entire earth. We can think globally and act locally. As Mother Teresa once said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” To that end, what small change can you make today?

Perhaps one way to have an impact is by looking at your electric bill. Electricity use peaks at this time of year with air conditioner use. Did you know you can purchase local renewable energy to reduce our overall dependence on fossil fuel? It’s more affordable than you think. Check out this website. wellesleyma.gov/261/Voluntary-Renewable-Energy

We can’t replace the environment, but we can renew it!

PARISH OFFICES OPEN BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

Our clergy and staff continue to work remotely whenever possible, as directed in the reopening guidelines from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Archdiocese of Boston. Administrative staff are generally available by phone: Monday – Thursday: 9:00am – 4:00pm Friday: 9:00am – 12:00pm

The offices will be open for Mass cards and other busi-ness by appointment only. For everyone’s health and safe-ty, please do not come to the office without calling first to arrange an appointment.

A HEARTFELT WELCOME!

We, the members of the St. John-St. Paul Society of St. Vincent de Paul, wish to offer our prayers and congratulations to our catechumens and candidates who were initiated into the Catholic Church on Wednesday July 8th at St. John.

Blessings to Stephanie, Hal, Brandi, Julie and Reagan.

MATT NORWOOD S ORDINATION Please keep our Transitional Deacon, Matthew Norwood in your prayers as he makes the final preparations for his Ordination to the Priesthood on Saturday, August 1st 2020. We will be in touch over the next few weeks with ways in which you can share in the joy of Matt's Ordination and Mass of Thanksgiving.

ST. JOHN-ST. PAUL SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

In today's Gospel, we hear the story of the sower and we know that “some seed fell on rich soil, and produce fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirty fold.” The Saint John and Saint Paul

Society of Saint Vincent de Paul offers confidential help to those families or individuals experiencing temporary financial hardship due to illness, unemployment, etc. For assistance, please call either parish office or email at [email protected]. "Charity is the cement which binds Communities to God and persons to one another . . ." - St. Vincent de Paul.

Welcome! St. John School welcomed its new principal, Mrs. Siobhan Mahoney on July 1st. We look forward to introducing her to the entire school and parish community.

SAINT JOHN SCHOOL

Vladimir the Great of Kiev had many children, including Boris and Gleb believed to be his favorite who converted to Catholicism when Christianity came to the country. Boris took the Christian name Romanus (Roman) at Baptism and Gleb the Baptismal name David. After Vladimir became ill and died, the older brother, Sviatopolk, ascended to the throne and immediately began a plot to make certain the inheritance was solely for himself. Realizing what Sviatopolk planned, followers went to intercept Boris on his way home from a military expedition, to convince him to forcibly claim his rightful inheritance. Because of his deep faith and Christian beliefs, Boris refused. While at prayer with a fellow Christian, Sviatopolk devotees snuck upon him and stabbed Boris to death. Sviatopolk then sent for his brother Gleb to return home because his intention was to not have to share the inheritance with anyone. Sviatopolk killed Gleb as well. Another brother, Yaroslav, moved the bodies of Boris and Gelb five years later and buried them at the Church of Saint Basil in Vyshhorod, Russia, and because of many miracles at their gravesites, the place became of place of common pilgrimage. Saints Boris and Gleb are the first saints canonized in Kiev. They are venerated in the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Their feast day is July 24.
