REGULATIONS ON FASTING AND ABSTINENCE DURING LENT

The dual disciplines of fasting and abstinence have a long history in the Catholic Church. Going back to the early Church, the purpose behind the custom of self-denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create a certain emptiness. In this way, freed from all distractions, we are able to hear and respond to God’s continued call to conversion and holiness.

FASTING is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 years. On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be takes according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.

ABSTINENCE from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older on Ash Wednesday and all of the Fridays of Lent.

Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.

Fasting, almsgiving and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

St. Michael’s Council of Catholic Women FLEA MARKET in the Cenacle

March 24th and 25th 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM Start setting aside small furniture items and gently

used articles (not clothing please) such as household items, linens, toys, books, and pictures. Collection will

be on Tues., 3/21, from 6– 8 PM and Wed., 3/22, from 9AM to 4PM in the Cenacle.

THE JOURNEY OF TRANSFIGURATION “We used to be such good friends. How is it that you’ve moved so far away?” one man asked another. “Perhaps,” the other replied, “you have moved away. By standing still.” This exchange very well could have happened between Peter and Jesus, had Peter been allowed to erect tents to stay on the mount of the Transfiguration. He nearly succumbed to the temptation to stay in a place of wonder and light. But Jesus knew the hard truth: we are on a continual journey when we are walking the paths of God’s will. It is not good for us to stay in one place on our faith journey. Equally unhealthy is staying put in times of joy and wonder to avoid life’s difficulties, or to wallow in our trials and temptations and fail to be companions for our sisters and brothers who are also suffering—or celebrating! The pilgrim Church is required to do one thing on its Lenten journey: to walk continually with Christ as his Body born of water and the Spirit, seeking God’s will, helping the reign of God to be known on earth, being led to the end of our journey, transfigured for all time into the company of heaven. Lenten Mission with Fr. Richard Leonard, S.J. Our Lady of Lourdes, Dunedin

Join us Mon., March 13th thru Wed., March 15th at 9:45am (Mass at 9am) or 7pm for our Parish Mission, “Living the Gospel of Joy.” Pope Francis calls all the Church to live

our faith, hope and love with joy. This is not a supercilious joy that pretends that we don’t have a care in the world. It is the assurance of a faith that calls us to go out to the world confidently because we know where we have come from, why we are here, and where we are going. Fr. Leonard is the author of the international best-selling book, “Where the Hell is God?”

began Wednesday, March 8 but it is not too late to join. Call the Parish Office (797-2375) for details.
