S t. Patrick’s Day is associated with a myri-ad of symbols: shamrocks, parades, bowler hats, lepre-chauns, pagans, druids, snakes. All of these originate in the feast of St. Patrick (385-March 17, 461). Patrick (named Maun at birth) was born in Scotland of mixed her-itage, his father being Roman.

As a teen his village was raided by Irish pi-rates and he was carted off to Ireland as a slave. He spent six years in captivity, herd-ing sheep in the icy wilds. In his isolation he turned to God and daily prayer and eventual-ly escaped back to England, where he be-came a priest. He returned to Ireland and converted most of the population, establish-ing monasteries, convents and par-ishes. He used the shamrock, a green plant with three separate leaves to explain the Holy Trinity: three persons in one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
