Volume XVIII No. 1820 Third Sunday In Ordinary Time January 24, 2016

Liturgy and Worship ~ Joyce Lubofsky ~ 281.333.3891 Liturgia y Culto ~ [email protected]

MONTHLY CELEBRATION OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK

Beginning in February, we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick after the 8:30 AM Mass on the First Saturday of the month.

To receive the sacrament, you MUST register in advance; details for registration will be printed in next week’s Bulletin.

What is the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick?

“Heal the sick!” The Church has received this charge from the Lord and strives to carry it out by taking care of the sick as well as by accompanying them with her prayer of intercessions. She believes in the life-giving presence of Christ, the physician of souls and bodies.

The celebration of the sacrament includes the following principal elements: the priest in silence lays hands on the sick; he prays over them in the faith of the Church; he then anoints them with Oil of the Sick (which was blessed by Cardinal DiNardo at the Chrism Mass last Holy Week), saying: “Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit.” [Amen.] “May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.” [Amen.]

As soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time to receive this sacrament has certainly arrived. It is fitting also to receive the Anointing of the Sick just prior to a serious operation. The same holds for the elderly whose frailty becomes more pronounced.

The special grace of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick has its effects: - the uniting of the sick person to Christ’s Passion, for his/her own good and that of the whole Church; - the strengthening, peace and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or of old age. - the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of Penance; - the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of his/her soul; - the preparation for passing over to eternal life.

Father Wencil will be on vacation January 25 —February 2. Here are the changes in the sacramental schedule: NO 8:30 AM MASS: Tuesday, January 26 to Friday, January 29; there will be Mass on Saturday, January 30; NO CONFESSIONS: Tuesday January 26, and Thursday, January 28.

Adult Ministry and Faith formation: Because Our Faith is too rich and beautiful to have ever learned it ALL…

Contact Heidi Clark, Director of Adult Ministry, 281.333.3891, Ext. 328 or [email protected]

Adult faith formation at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church is centered around the understanding that living “The Way” taught by Jesus Christ is a life-long, evolving journey, involving both effort and decision. To enable adults to explore the faith and deepen their knowledge of God’s Word, we provide many opportunities to come together in a learning environment. As a diverse community with a small parish feel, we know it is important to walk that journey with others and to share what we have learned along the way.

Interested in being Catholic? If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about becoming Catholic, our RCIA program is just the ticket! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process of prayer, reflection, and learning that allows for the continual discernment of God's will. Our Spiritual Home Donations to St. Paul Building Fund Pay for

Our Building Loan

Here at St. Paul the Apostle Church we have conducted two Capital Campaigns to pay for our building construction and loan costs, which totaled $8,387,057. Capital Campaign I ran from September, 2006 to December, 2012. Capital Campaign II ran from September, 2010 to December, 2015. However, as of January 1, 2016, though our capital campaigns have ended, our building loan debt still equals $3,720,318. You will notice the capital campaign envelopes are no longer included in your monthly packages. They have been replaced with an envelope designated for donations to help pay for our Spiritual Home. This is our new Building Fund envelope and we ask you to please contribute using this envelope to help us reduce our continuing building loan obligation.

Separately, thank you as a parish family, for supporting the Peace Garden Brick project and for your other end-of-year donations to help us with this debt.
