Volume XVIII No. 2040 Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time July 5, 2020

“Extend mercy toward others, so there can be no one whom you meet without helping…” – St. Vincent de Paul In 1833, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam founded the Society of St. Vincent de Paul along with 6 friends. To fund the activities to help the poor, they took a secret collection using a black bag. They passed it from person to person until each one had given their share. Because the Society does not receive DSF funding, Bishop Morkovsky allowed us to have our first Black Bag collection in 1970; 50 years later, we continue the tradition of the Black Bag Collection. We ask that you to join and donate to our Annual Black Bag Collection July 11-12, 2020.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for ourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Mt. 11:28-30

Welcome to Youth Ministry “…dedicated  to bringing  teens  into  relationship with Jesus  Christ,  and  empowering  young  people  to become disciples of Him in their everyday life through

study of scripture, catechesis and service…”

Youth Ministry Kathy Giannini 281.333.3891 Ext. 301 or

[email protected]

What can we learn from today’s Gospel?…. Jesus promises that when we are troubled,

if we turn to him he will help us. Let us take him at his word.

A yoke is always carried by two oxen. The reason Christ’s yoke is easy

for us to carry is because he is carrying it with us, and taking most of the weight.

Teens, where do you need a little rest in your life right now? Do you have anything weighing on you now?

Dear heavenly Father, thank you for helping me and guiding me through my days. There is a lot on my mind and a lot of responsibilities on my list right now. I ask for you to give me rest for my tired body

and mind. Please lift the burdens from my shoulders. Comfort me and give me peace. Amen.

Adult Ministry and Faith Formation: Because our faith is too rich and too beautiful to have ever learned it all…

Adult faith formation at St Paul the Apostle Catholic Church is centered around the understanding that living “The Way” taught by Jesus Christ is a life-long, evolving journey, involving both effort and decision. To enable adults to explore the faith and deepen their knowledge of God’s Word, we provide many opportunities to come together in a learning environment. As a diverse community with a small parish feel, we know it is important to walk that journey with others and to share what we have learned along the way.

Adult Ministry at St. Paul’s—Meeting you Wherever you Are

St. Paul’s offers a wide variety of ministries and programs to help community members grow in faith regardless of where they are on their journeys. If you are someone just returning to the faith, we have a small group for you. If you are interested in learning more about becoming Catholic, we have something for you, too. If you are active in your faith but feel like you have still more growth to achieve, we have programs for you, too. All these programs are being offered online using Zoom. If you have a need that you think we aren’t meeting, let us know so we can work together to help accomplish that. Contact Heidi for more info: [email protected] or 281-333-3891, ext. 328.

For those Considering Catholicism Our RCIA program is created specifically to welcome seekers at any time throughout the year. If you feel like God is calling you to learn more about becoming Catholic, now is a great time to respond to that call. Our RCIA program is currently meeting online, and we have options to help regardless of what your availability might be. Contact Heidi at [email protected] or call 281-333-3891, ext. 328.

On the Horizon: Discovering our Dignity Bible Study for Women

Our always-popular women’s Bible studies are wrapping up for the summer, but we are looking forward to another amazing offering beginning in September. The book we’ll be using is called Discovering our Dignity, and it’s a study of women of the Bible. Imagine the most well-known women of the Bible stepping into your life and sharing with you their best advice about the things in life that really matter. That’s the focus of Discovering our Dignity. Two sessions will be offered—one on Monday evening and the other on Tuesday morning. Want more info? Contact Heidi at 281-333-3891, ext. 328 or [email protected]

Congratulations, New Catholics! In the last several weeks, we joyfully have welcomed nine new Catholics who, after completing their journeys through RCIA, have either been baptized into the faith or made Professions of Faith after having been baptized in another religion. We are grateful for the beauty and richness that each of these individuals brings to our faith community. Congratulations Dylan Chagoya, Virginia Frank, Adelynne Guerra, Matt Higgs, Estevan Leyva, Rey Lopez, Steven Murray, Michael Karousos, and Josue Parr.

Updates from ACTS Regular ACTS events have been an ongoing part of community life at St. Paul’s for 15 years. Except for a brief interruption following Hurricane Harvey, this is the first time that our church community has had to postpone a significant portion of the ministerial and community events that ACTS offers our parish family. To date, the women’s July retreat in English, the men’s September retreat in English, and the annual Men Who Cook fund raiser have all been cancelled or postponed. The ACTS Core Team agreed that keeping the health and well-being of community members is of utmost importance. Team members are working on an alternative community building event for everyone and also are committed to supporting our annual parish festival in every way possible.

Men’s Friday Rise Continues Despite the need for social distancing, many groups and ministries continue to meet online and in other, creative ways. Among them is the weekly men’s Rise group which meets online via Zoom from 7-8 a.m. on Friday mornings. They discuss that weekend’s scripture readings, opportunities for service, and share aspects of their faith journeys. If you’d like more information about joining them, contact Marcus at 832-250-3897 or Brian at 713-560-8412. Newcomers are always welcome!
