Volume XVIII No. 1827 Fifth Sunday Of Lent March 13, 2016

LITURGY AND WORSHIP – LITURGIA Y CULTO Joyce Lubofsky [email protected]

As we enter the Fifth Week of Lent, let’s continue our look ahead to the celebration of the “TRIDUUM,” the three (tri) days (du-um) in which we participate in the greatest mysteries of our faith. According to the Church's ancient tradition, neither Mass nor the sacraments are celebrated on Good Friday or Holy Saturday. On Good Friday, the entire Church fixes her gaze on the Cross at Calvary. Each member tries to understand at what cost Christ has won our redemption. We unite ourselves to our Savior, and we contemplate our own death to sin in the Death of our Lord. Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence. The Church is stripped of its adornments, the altar bare, and with the door of the empty tabernacle standing open. The liturgical observance of Christ's suffering, crucifixion and death evidently has been in existence from the earliest days of the Church. The Commemoration of the Lord’s Passion has three parts: the Liturgy of the Word, the Veneration of the Cross and Holy Communion. The liturgy starts as the priest, wearing red vestments, goes to the altar in silence and prostrate himself for a few moments in silent prayer, then an introductory prayer is prayed. In the Liturgy of the Word, we hear the famous Suffering Servant passage from Isaiah (52:13-53:12). Psalm 30 is the Responsorial Psalm with its refrain: "Father, I put my life in your hands." The Second Reading is from the Letter to the Hebrews, 4:14-16; 5:7-9. The Gospel Reading is the Passion according to John. The ten General Intercessions pray for the Church, the Pope, the clergy and laity of the Church, those preparing for baptism, the unity of Christians, the Jewish people, those who do not believe in Christ, those who do not believe in God, all in public office, and those in special need. Part two is the Veneration of the Cross. A cross is processed through the Church, and then venerated by the congregation. We joyfully venerate and kiss the wooden cross "on which hung the Savior of the world." The veneration of the cross on Good Friday started in Jerusalem during the 4th Century following the recovery of the True Cross by St. Helen. By the 7th Century the practice spread to the rest of the Church. During part three, Holy Communion, the altar is covered with a cloth and the ciboriums containing the Blessed Sacrament consecrated at Holy Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper are brought to the altar. The Our Father is recited. The congregation receives Holy Communion, there is a "Prayer After Communion," and then a "Prayer Over the People," and everyone departs in silence. This solemn muted atmosphere continues until the Easter Vigil.

This Friday at 7 PM is our final Lenten celebration of the Stations of the Cross. Come join in this wonderful prayer.

Adult Ministry and Faith formation: Because Our Faith is too rich and beautiful to have ever learned it ALL…

Contact Heidi Clark, Director of Adult Ministry, 281.333.3891, Ext. 328 or [email protected]

Adult faith formation at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church is centered around the understanding that living “The Way” taught by Jesus Christ is a life-long, evolving journey, involving both effort and decision. To enable adults to explore the faith and deepen their knowledge of God’s Word, we provide many opportunities to come together in a learning environment. As a diverse community with a small parish feel, we know it is important to walk that journey with others and to share what we have learned along the way.

Interested in being Catholic? If you or someone you know is interested in learning more

about becoming Catholic, our RCIA program is just the ticket! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process of prayer, reflection, and learning that

allows for the continual discernment of God's will. Please contact Heidi Clark, 281.333.3891 or [email protected].

April Theology on Tap Features Fr. Luke Millette

Join young adults from throughout the bay area at our monthly Theology on Tap events featuring a different speaker and topic every month. The next event features Fr. Luke Millette who will be talking about real love; it takes place on Tuesday, April 12. The group meets from 7-9 PM at Chuy’s in Webster.

Zumba at St. Paul Emotional and spiritual wellness is closely tied to physical wellness. Zumba is a dance fitness program designed to

make exercising FUN! Classes meet in Beck Hall or Founders Hall, depending on availability.

Thursdays at 6:45 PM Saturdays at 10 AM

“I have been given so many gifts that I decided it was time for me to be in

contact with my Giftgiver.” These are the words of a woman who recently attended an

ACTS retreat. The 60 hours spent on an ACTS retreat are a once-in-a-lifetime experience that often yield huge blessings in the lives of retreatants. Whether it’s a deeper

faith life you need, a new support system, or healing, at an ACTS retreat you’ll find sisters who won’t judge you but will love you right where you are.

The next women’s retreat is set for April 7-10 at the Christian Renewal Center in Dickinson where retreatants will stay in comfy, semi-private rooms and be catered to by a team of women who have been praying and preparing for them for more than four months. The cost of the retreat is $205, but finances should never be an obstacle to attending; scholarships are available for those who need them. Registration forms are available at the Welcome Center. Contact Alicia Root at [email protected] for more info.

Marriage Conference-April 2 Come to the 2nd annual Together in Holiness Catholic Marriage Conference on Saturday, April 2, from 9 AM to 3:30 PM at St. Cecilia Catholic Church! The theme of the day is “Family as a School of Love,” and features speakers Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers, known around the world as the “Dynamic Deacon,” author Emily Stimpson, and others. You’ll gain insight, inspiration, and practical guidance for making your marriage and family life a “school of love.” The cost is $45/couple or $25/individual. Childcare is available. Register at www.TogetherInHoliness.org.

Prayer Shawl Ministry St. Paul’s Prayer Shawl Ministry is in need of yarn. If you are able to donate yarn, please contact Mary Fitts at 281.486.5895. “Monetary donations cannot be accepted.” We meet every other Thursday in Parlor A from 4 – 6 PM.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is the model of compassion and kindness. He shows us how to be merciful and nonjudgmental.

When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and mercy into our hearts and into the hearts of those suffering in poverty.
