Volume XVIII No. 1839 Tenth Sunday In Ordinary Time June 5, 2016

that June 20, the first day of summer, is National eGiving Day? St. Paul the Apostle can take particular joy in this celebration, as the response to eGiving in our church has been wonderful.

To build on this success, I am setting a National eGiving Day Challenge. My goal is for St. Paul the Apostle families to put envelopes on a permanent summer vacation and make the switch to eGiving. This is especially important in the summer months, when many families may be out of town some weekends and St. Paul the Apostle does not receive their envelopes. It’s easy for people to forget to catch up once they’re back, and our weekly offertory can fluctuate as a result – making it harder to

predict how much we will have to sustain our year-round ministries.

The more families who welcome the beginning of summer by taking this National eGiving Day Challenge, the more consistency and predictable our offertory will be month after month and this will help us do even more to spread Christ’s love throughout the community.

Being part of this challenge is simple: Visit www.faithdirect.net and use our church code: TX596 Thank you for your continued support of our parish family with your time and talents as well as treasure! God Bless You, Rev. Wencil Pavlovsky

WHY DO CATHOLICS OFFER MASSES FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED?

The offering of Mass for the repose of the soul of the faithful departed is linked with our Catholic belief in Purgatory. We believe that if a person has died believing in God but with venial sins and the hurt caused by sin, then God in His divine love and mercy will first purify the soul. After this purification has been completed, the soul will have the holiness and purity needed to share in the beatific vision in heaven. While each individual stands judgment before the Lord and must render an account of his life, the Communion of the Saints shared on this earth continues. Therefore, just as we pray for each other and share each other's burdens now, the faithful on earth can offer prayers and sacrifices to help the departed souls undergoing purification, and no better prayer could be offered than that of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. What if the person's soul has already been purified and gone to heaven? We on earth know neither the judgment of God nor the divine time frame; so, there is always goodness in remembering our departed and commending them to God through prayer and sacrifice. However, if indeed the departed soul has been purified and now rests in God's presence in heaven, then those prayers and sacrifices offered benefit the other souls in purgatory through the love and mercy of God.

“Why doesn’t the priest announce the intention out loud?” Because the intention is essentially a spiritual act, its publication neither adds nor subtracts from its efficacy. Indeed, publicly announcing the intention is done for the comfort of the living and not for the benefit of the dead. It is not liturgically correct, however, to use the moment of silence after the "Let us pray" of the Collect Prayer nor to insert the name in the Eucharistic prayer.

. . . to be continued next week

¿POR QUÉ LOS CATÓLICOS OFRECEN MISAS PARA AQUELLOS QUE HAN

MUERTO?

Adult faith formation at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church is centered around the understanding that living “The Way” taught by Jesus Christ is a life-long, evolving journey, involving both effort and decision.

With your support Norberto can dedicate his life to helping others.

Hundreds of devout, educated young people like Norberto are seek- ing vocations to religious life and the priesthood life each year. They are highly accomplished nurses, lawyers, counselors and teachers — all called to serve, all with educational loans typical of today’s graduates.

Unlike most, they are answering a religious calling that simply can’t fund repayment of student loans. In the U.S. nearly half of all candidates will abandon their calling because of educational debt and the shortages of priests and religious will continue to erode our churches, schools and communities. The Labouré Society exists to change this reality . . . one amazing candidate at a time. At Labouré, we believe every vocation is a miracle and we need

your help to make these miracles happen. Labouré is named for St. Catherine Labouré of the Miraculous Medal. Back in 2003 when Catholic businessman Cy Laurent learned about the reality of educational debt as a barrier to vocations, he began working for change. He hasn’t stopped yet! Today Labouré provides tools and guidelines for faith-based fundraising and financial management through a network of hard-working volunteers. To date, over 250 young people have been delivered into formation and hundreds more are striving for their miracle right now. Consider helping us in support of Catholic vocations. Sharing God’s love is the mission of all our lives and your support is much appreciated. There are many ways you can help. To learn more, visit www.LaboureSociety.org/Norberto
