Find the Missal (Ordinary of the Mass) at 150 in Oramos Cantando/We Pray in Song

First Reading 1 Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem,

summoning their elders, their leaders, their judges, and their officers. When they stood in ranks before God, Joshua addressed all the people: “If it does not please you to serve the LORD, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now dwelling. As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

But the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD for the service of other gods. For it was the LORD, our God, who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, out of a state of slavery. He performed those great miracles before our very eyes and protected us along our entire journey and among the peoples through whom we passed. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.”

Responsorial Psalm Ps 34 R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord

Second Reading Eph 5:2a, 25-32 Brothers and sisters: Live in love, as Christ loved us.

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

So also husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.

Gospel Jn 6:60-69 Many of Jesus’disciples who were listening said, “This

saying is hard; who can accept it?” Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about

this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.”

As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”

Returning Catholics There will be an information meeting in the Church on Thursday Sept. 3, at 7:30 PM, for anyone who would like to return to the sac-

rament of Holy Communion. If you have been wondering if you might be able to return to communion and fully participate in the life

of Christ and his Church, we invite you to attend this meeting and get the information you need to know. Please fill out the form be-

low and drop it in the collection or you may give them to me at the rear of the church after mass.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Catechetical Corner

The Mass — Liturgy of the Word Most of the Liturgy of the Word is made up of readings from Scripture. On Sundays and solemnities, there are three

scripture readings. During most of the year, the first reading is from the Old Testament and the second reading is from one of

the New Testament letters.

During Easter Time, the first reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles, which tells the story of the Church in its

earliest days. The last reading is always taken from one of the four Gospels.

In the Liturgy of the Word, the Church feeds the People of God from the table of his Word. The Scriptures are the Word

of God, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. In the Scriptures, God speaks to us, leading us along the path to

salvation.

The Responsorial Psalm is sung between the readings. The psalm helps us to meditate on the Word of God.

The high point of the Liturgy of the Word is the reading of the Gospel. Because the Gospels tell of the life, ministry, and

preaching of Christ, it receives several special signs of honor and reverence. The gathered assembly stands to hear the Gospel

and it is introduced by an acclamation of praise. Apart from Lent, that acclamation is “Alleluia,” derived from a Hebrew

phrase meaning “Praise the Lord!” A deacon (or, if no deacon is present, a priest) reads the Gospel.

After the scripture readings, the celebrant preaches the homily. In the homily, the preacher focuses on the scripture texts

or some other texts from the liturgy, drawing from them lessons that may help us to live better lives, more faithful to Christ’s

call to grow in holiness.

In many Masses, the Profession of Faith then follows the homily, either the Nicene or Apostles’ Creed. The Nicene Creed

is a statement of faith dating from the fourth century, while the Apostles’ Creed is the ancient baptismal creed of the Church

in Rome. If baptismal promises are renewed, from a formula based on the Apostles’ Creed, this takes the place of the creed.

The Liturgy of the Word concludes with the Universal Prayer, also called the Prayer of the Faithful. The gathered

assembly intercedes with God on behalf of the Church, the world, and themselves, entrusting their needs to the faithful and

loving God. Copyright © 2015, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington DC. All rights reserved.

St. Pius V Catholic Church, Pasadena, Tx August 23, 2015

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear friends,

Last week, Deacon Dan Seiler and I, along with 3 other parishioners, were at “The Amazing Parish”

Conference in Denver. Thanks to the generosity of the Cardinal, some private help, and the personal

commitments we each made, there was no cost to the parish. We learned of and brought back some wonderful

ideas and approaches to problems that every parish faces. Over 100 parishes from every part of the country sent a

team to the conference: some with less than 100 registered families, others as large as mega-churches. Six

parishes from the Archdiocese sent teams. The questions we all asked and the experiences we all shared

illuminated a vision of parish to which I think we at St. Pius V can aspire.

Pope Francis has said that the parish is “the Church living in the midst of the homes of her sons and

daughters… The parish is the presence of the Church in a given territory, an environment for hearing God’s

word, for growth in the Christian life, for dialogue, proclamation, charitable outreach, worship and celebration...

It is a community of communities, a sanctuary where the thirsty come to drink in the midst of their journey, and a

center of constant missionary outreach.” These words were at the core of the Conference activities. The parish is

important; perhaps the most important institution of the Church. We are the Church, the Body of Christ, here in

this place and what we do has eternal significance for ourselves and for others.

Over the next few months we will be reflecting upon what we heard and sharing it with the Parish Councils,

other parish organizations, and with you. The parish vision is Christ’s own vision for us. What we brought back

from the Conference are some ways in which the parish community can be more welcoming and more life-giving

in service of that vision. Let us each lift our hearts to Christ and embrace what He has in store for us.

"We learn many virtues in our Christian families. Above all,

we learn to love, asking nothing in return."

– Pope Francis

Queridos amigos,

Padre Joe
