COVID 19 Comments: “Returned from the grocery store with the hubby. Took masks off. Turned out it was the wrong hubby! Be attentive.”

“The world has turned upside down. Old folks are sneaking out of the house, and their kids are yelling at them to stay indoors!”

“…Quarantine has turned us into dogs. We roam the house all day looking for food. We are told ‘no’ if we get too close to stranger. And we get really excited about car rides.” SOURCE: The Joyful Newsletter, Vol. 35 No. 5, September-October, 2020

SOMETHING TO THINKABOUT ...

“The season for enjoying thefullness of life - partaking of theharvest, sharing the harvest with

others, and reinvesting and saving portions of the harvest for yet another season of growth.” Denis Waitley

General MeetingOn Tuesday, September 22, 2020, the

CWL General Meeting will be held in the Parish Hall after the 9:30 am Mass (approximately 10:00 am). We will meet for about 30 minutes and then go to the Church grounds for the blessing and planting of a tree. Please dress accordingly. This tree is being planted to celebrate the CWL Theme “Care for Our Common Home” and to recognize the Season of Creation, September 1- October 4. The tree was donated by the estate of Ruby Sharpe. We are very grateful for this donation and this tree in our Church grounds will be another of the many ways that we have to remember Ruby. Please note: We are meeting in the Parish Hall and in keeping with COVID-19, NL Public Health and the Parish guidelines, socially distancing, wearing of masks, and there will not be a social at this meeting. We will not be serving tea, coffee, water or food .

TREESJoyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never seeA poem as lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prestAgainst the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,And lifts her leafy arms to pray;A tree that may in Summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair;Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

Who intimately lives with rain.Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.

ST. PATRICK’S MERCY HOMEFUNDRAISER

St Pius X CWL is inviting members and parishioners to support the St. Patrick’s Mercy Home Foundation fundraising initiative, the Grand Parade (see the Parish Bulletin of September 13 for details). Although the proposed walk in teams is scheduled for September 19 it can take place anytime, and it can happen virtually. Your donation in a clearly marked envelope can be dropped off at the front desk of St. Patrick’s Mercy Home or mailed to

St. Patrick’s Mercy Home FoundationP.O. Box 21191

St. John’s NL, A1A 5B2

Monies from this fundraiser will be used to build an atrium in the courtyard of the Home for people suffering from dementia. Our CWL Council has partnered with the Home over the years to support their many initiatives. And now we invite all our members and parishioners to support this present fundraiser. Many of our members and parishioners have been residents of the Home and recipients of the wonderful care and compassion received while there. One of our founding members, Joan Mills, is shown in the photo used to advertise this fundraiser.

PARISH PRAYER BOWL

Our Parish Prayer Bowl continues to lay before the altar of our church and there it remains as a sentinel beholding our every day prayer intentions. It is possible to submit prayer intentions at our Parish Office. A phone call to our Parish Office is possible at 754-0170 or an email to Fr. Smith - [email protected] are also ways intentions might be made known and later placed before our altar.

FR. EARL DREAMSAND SINGS

NL Health authorities have chosen to allow ‘us’to sing at Mass and other events at St. PiusX. Our Parish Music Ministry will give to usguidance as to how we might sing the parts of theMass, psalm refrains and hymns known tous. Let’s rejoice in the Lord with our spoken orsung Word as God gives each one of us theability.

FR. EARL AWAY

Fr. Earl will join his Halifax based family from September 20-30 to preside at his Mother’s funeral and to take a home visit. Mrs. Margaret Smith died on May 5 as many of us recall. The funeral is scheduled for 11:00 am, September 23rd, one day after what would have been Mrs. Smith’s 102nd birthday. He is very grateful for everyone’s ongoing support during the extended mourning period before the funeral.

ADORATION OF THEBLESSED SACRAMENT

This wondrous prayer honours our blessed Lord God who humbly communes with us as Eucharistic Presence. Indeed, we are to be transformed into God’s Eucharistic People who serve God’s beloved humanity worldwide! Our Parish will begin ‘Adoration’ on Tuesdays from 1:00-5:00 pm. Benediction will take place at 5:00 pm. There will be an entrance registration of names and phone numbers as contact information is required of its participants. A mask will be required before persons settle in their pews, and there will be instructions given about a simple sanitization of pews.

DE MELLO FOR KIDSOF ALL AGES

OUR HEAVENLY HOME

When company comes to your

house, you probably have to put all

your toys away and make sure that

your room is clean. Now imagine

Jesus getting heaven ready for all

his friends. Maybe he’s setting up a special spot

just for you or getting a feast of all your

favourite foods ready. Whatever Jesus is doing,

he’s making sure that heaven will be a special place

- just for friends like you!

Jesus is busy in heaven today,

Preparing a home I’ll live in someday.

CALLING ALL PARENTS, GRANDPARENTS AND

GUARDIANS

This Sunday would usually be the time when we would begin registration for our Sunday Liturgy of the Word and sacramental preparation programs. However, concern for everyone's health and the limitations from the Department of Health and the Archdiocese prevent us from offering these family oriented programs in our usual format, that is at the Liturgy of the Word sessions during Sunday Mass.

Our commitment to assisting parents and families in the faith development and sacramental preparation of your children is as strong and focussed as ever before. We are probably even more committed than ever before because of the many challenges parents face in these COVID -19 times. We are looking for and assessing various options, including online programs, zoom sessions and individual conversations with children and/or parents.

We need your input. What format, time and frequency would work for your family? Do you know of any online programs, videos, cartoons and youtube offerings that might be helpful? How can we continue to promote a sense of community and parish identity? Please contact Maria Kelsey -

[email protected]. These are challenging times, yes, but with

everyone's contributions and cooperation, they can also be creative and faith-filled times. We look forward to the days, weeks and months ahead.

SAINTS SPEAK

You were within me, Lord, but I was outside myself.St. Augustine, Sunlit Absence, Martin Laird, Oxford U. Press, 2011

“God commands you to pray, but He forbids you to worry.”St. John Vianney

“Our labor here is but brief, but the reward is eternal. Do not be disturbed by the clamor of the world, which passes like a shadow. Do not let the false delights of a deceptive world deceive you.” St. Clare of Assisi

DONATIONS FOR

CHURCH SANITIZATION

Each year, our budget includes an allocated amount for the cost of cleaning supplies and equipment. Since the reopening of the Church, these costs have greatly increased as we follow the directives from the Department of Health and the Office of the Archbishop. The building must be completely sanitized after each use.

Some parishioners have made donations specifically for these extra expenses. If you would like to make a separate donation it would be greatly appreciated. You can do so by placing your donation in an envelope labeled SANITIZATION EXPENSES. Please include your name, address, and collection envelope number, if you use them.

PRESENTATION PEOPLE'S STORY NL

The Presentation Sisters have sent us a youtube link so that we can view their story in our province. Their story will be viewed (with others) at the Virtual Gathering of Presentation People, September 24 – 26, 2020. When the script, written by Bernadette and Betty Rae, was complete, and photos gathered, Chris Lewis, our Lantern Director, and his wife, Heather, magically turned it into this beautiful 7-minute video of our Presentation People’s Story in Newfoundland. Here is the youtube link:https://youtu.be/hgmaeA-OIsg

IS YOUR WORK A VOCATION?

It doesn’t take much looking in our economy to see that in fact there is a great deal of work that isn’t prayer, work that disconnects us from our sources of life rather than moves us toward wholeness. For work to be prayer, it must have a sense of vocation attached to it—we must feel some calling toward that work and the wholeness of which it is a part, that there is something holy in good work. Vocation is a calling and prayer is a call and response, deep calling to deep. For work to be prayer, to be vocation, it must be brought into a larger conversation. “The idea of vocation attaches to work a cluster of other ideas, including devotion, skill, pride, pleasure, the good stewardship of means and materials,” Wendell Berry writes. It is these “intangibles of economic value” that keep us from viewing work as “something good only to escape: ‘Thank God it’s Friday.’”SOURCE: Wendell Berry and the Given Life byRagan Sutterfield
