LIFE IS HARD, BUT HAVE NO FEAR Today’s readings take a fearless look at reality and reach a conclusion that we all know: life is hard. The prophet Malachi preaches fire and brimstone, warning us that evildoers will perish in flames. Saint Paul offers his own warning to the Thessalonians: keep busy, but never become a busybody. He reminds Christians that the apostles themselves worked in “toil and drudg-ery” as a model for how we ought to contribute to our community. The Gospel returns to the apocalyptic tone of Malachi, describing the utter chaos of the end-times. We will know the end is near when violence, catastrophe, and hatred dominate the earth. But we must not fear! God’s saving plan brings peace to our hearts. Malachi speaks of the sun’s “healing rays,” and Jesus himself promises to protect every hair on our heads.
Since December 8, 2019 is the Sec-ond Sunday of Advent, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is transferred to Monday, December 9, 2019. The ob-ligation to attend Mass, however,
does not transfer. The Optional Memorial of Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, December 9, is omitted this year.
THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF MARY St. Thomas is preparing food for the “Table” at the Presby-terian Church every third Thursday of each month. We need potatoes, carrots,
ham, green beans, and milk. You may call the parish office to sign up for items that you can do-nate . Items may be brought to the office prior to the third Thursday. Thank you!
THE TABLE
We will have the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Fri-day, December 6th, from 9:00am to 9:00pm. Please come and join us for Adoration on this First Friday. We invite you to sign up for an hour of
adoration. The sign-up sheet is on the parish bulletin board in the church hall. Please consid-er signing up for an hour to ensure we have eve-ry hour covered, and hopefully more than one person per hour can come. We will have the cel-ebration of mass at 12:00pm.

There are quite a few projects going on in our parish of St. Thomas. One of the items that I have been working with the parish pastoral council is how to create more activities that will bring us together as people of faith and as one parish. In the next month, we will have many opportuni-ties for all of us to come together with advent, the celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the po-sadas, and Christmas. I am even planning to do a retreat for our parish sometime during lent in preparation for Easter. I would hope that many of you will join us for these, and many other ac-tivities so that we will come together as the one parish family that we are. The Altar Guild will have their Christmas boutique on the weekend of November 23-24 after all the weekend Masses, and we invite you to come start your Christmas
shopping, and/or purchase one of the delicious homemade bake sale items. There will also be a raffle for some beautiful afghans/quilts, as well as gift baskets. The Guild will be selling tickets for the raffle items after each Mass. Tickets are just $1 per ticket.

En la Iglesia de Santo Tomás tene-mos la Adoración del Santísimo Sa-cramento el viernes 6 de diciembre de 9:00am a 9:00pm. El Santísimo Sacramento estará expuesto en la custodia en el altar para Adoración y oración. Tendremos la celebración de
la santa misa a las 12pm en Ingles. Por favor venga y acompáñenos para la Adoración en este primer viernes. Le Invitamos a registrarse para una hora de adoración. La hoja de inscripción está en el tablero de anuncios en el salón de la iglesia. Considere inscribirse durante una hora para asegurarse de que tengamos por lo menos un adorador por hora, y si es posible más de una persona por hora.
Hay bastantes proyectos en marcha en nuestra parroquia de St. Thomas. Una de las cosas que he estado trabajando con el consejo pastoral de la parroquia es cómo crear más actividades que nos unan como personas de fe y como una parroquia. En el próximo mes, tendremos muchas oportu-nidades para que todos nos unamos en el Adviento, la celebración de Nuestra Señora de Guada-lupe, las posadas y la Navidad. Incluso estoy planeando hacer un retiro para nuestra parroquia en algún momento durante la Cuaresma en preparación para la Pascua. Espero que muchos de ustedes nos acompañen en estas y muchas otras actividades para que podamos unirnos como la única familia parroquial que somos. Celebremos juntos a Nuestra Madre del Cielo y Patrona de las Américas. Están todos invitados a participar del novenario en honor a la Virgen de Guadalupe comenzando el miércoles 4 de di-ciembre a las 7:00pm y cada día hasta el 11 de diciembre. Las mañanitas serán el jueves 12 de diciembre a las 4:00am seguido de la misa a las 6:00am. Por la tarde del día 12 de diciembre acompáñenos a meditar el santo rosario a las 6:30pm y la celebración de la misa a las 7:00pm. Al igual que en años pasados les pedimos de su ayuda, estaremos necesitando pan, vasos, servi-lletas, barras de chocolate, leche, o chocolate preparado. While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and vo-tive offerings, Jesus said, "All that you see here—the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down." Then they asked him, "Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?" He an-swered, "See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and 'The time has come.' Do not follow them! When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end." Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be power-ful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky. "Before all this happens, however, they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name. It will lead to your giving testimo-ny. Remember, you are not to prepare your de-fense beforehand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives."

En aquel tiempo, como algunos ponderaban la solidez de la construcción del templo y la belleza de las ofrendas votivas que lo adornaban, Jesús dijo: "Días vendrán en que no quedará piedra sobre piedra de todo esto que están admirando; todo será destruido". Entonces le preguntaron: "Maestro, ¿cuándo va a ocurrir esto y cuál será la señal de que ya está a punto de suceder?" Él les respondió: "Cuídense de que nadie los engañe, porque muchos ven-drán usurpando mi nombre y dirán: 'Yo soy el Mesías. El tiempo ha llegado'. Pero no les hagan caso. Cuando oigan hablar de guerras y revolu-ciones, que no los domine el pánico, porque eso tiene que acontecer, pero todavía no es el fin". Luego les dijo: "Se levantará una nación contra otra y un reino contra otro. En diferentes lugares habrá grandes terremotos, epidemias y hambre, y aparecerán en el cielo señales prodigiosas y te-rribles. Pero antes de todo esto los perseguirán a ustedes y los apresarán; los llevarán a los tribunales y a la cárcel, y los harán comparecer ante reyes y go-bernadores, por causa mía. Con esto darán testi-monio de mí. Grábense bien que no tienen que preparar de antemano su defensa, porque yo les daré palabras sabias, a las que no podrá resistir ni contradecir ningún adversario de ustedes. Los traicionarán hasta sus propios padres, herma-nos, parientes y amigos. Matarán a algunos de ustedes y todos los odiarán por causa mía. Sin embargo, no caerá ningún cabello de la cabeza de ustedes. Si se mantienen firmes, conseguirán la vida".
