Chamber update

For more information about the West Berks Chamber of Commerce please call 01753 870500

gary CranfordBusiness ManagerWest Berks Chamber of Commerce

At the recent Local Annual Meeting for the Chamber I was delighted to see Buzz Magazine’s Lucie hobbs elected onto the West Berks Chamber Council. Lucie has already impressed with her depth of local knowledge and the answer to what’s going on where! The Chamber has submitted a letter of support to newbury College for his bid to open a Studio School for up to 300 14-19 year olds. The concept for the school was based on employer engagement for learning around the key themes of STeM subjects (Science, Technology, engineering and Maths).

The Chamber continues to provide West Berks Council with valuable consultation on its Core Strategy for housing numbers and sites. We also provide input to both the newbury Vision and economic Development Plan in terms of the needs of the business community in West Berkshire. There is a great opportunity to learn more about the local Chamber on the 21st July at newbury Racecourse. Come along to our free Meet The Chamber evening starting at 6:00pm, for more details contact the number below.

CultureFest 2014

CultureFest 12th July 2014, Organised by All2gether (Minority

ethnic Forum), at the grandstand, newbury Racecourse.

In addition to Sovereign Housing and Greenham Common Trust, we are very pleased to announce that Local Buzz Magazine and Kennet Radio are also supporting the event this year.

All local voluntary and community groups are invited to participate in this exciting and diverse event. CultureFest is a great platform for promoting community projects, increase group membership, fundraise, perform and exhibit, or simply raise awareness of achievements and ambitions.

We are very excited that the awesomely fantastic premium Latin band Son Guarachando will be performing this year, we are also looking forward to a performance from our home-grown band TLA (Three Letter Agency) with Odis “Voiceboy” Palmer.

The Dhol Player Collective are once again supporting CultureFest, and If you’ve never seen these guys perform, you’re really missing out! Full of energy, rhythm and lots of NOISE!

CultureFest is our flagship community event, showcasing culture, heritage, diversity, community achievement, and success through: performance, music, dance, arts & crafts, workshops, stalls, exhibitions and food.

The participants lined up for this year include Kala the Arts, Santa Maria Bellydance Academy, Thai Cultural Association, Rhythmworks with Djembe drumming, Sing for Fun, Iqbal Pathan & Mark Turauskis and of course a diverse variety of International foods for you to try!

This year we have been inundated with stall bookings, but we are keen to hear from you if you offer something different and unusual.

CultureFest 2014 promises to enthral and entertain guests with colourful displays, dynamic performances and interactive workshops; a vibrant and diverse event not to be missed.

Students and Vodafone Volunteers Celebrate ‘Take a Chance’

Students from eight West Berkshire secondary schools and enthusiastic volunteers from Vodafone recently celebrated their participation in this year’s Take a Chance Programme, a series of workshops and mentoring sessions run by the education Business Partnership West Berkshire.

Over the past seven years, Vodafone hQ in newbury has opened its doors to 350 students, aged 14 to 15 years, to inspire and motivate them to maximise their potential for success in school and beyond. The 280 Vodafone employees involved so far have greatly valued the opportunity Take a Chance offers them to give something back to the local community by helping young people learn life skills and develop their self-confidence.

In their final workshop the students spoke highly of their experience and

one commented, “The Vodafone Buddies have helped me to understand and get to know myself better and to make the most of my qualities and skills.”

Looking ahead, Programme Manager helen Roy said, “The eBP is delighted that thanks to Vodafone Foundation’s generous support and funding of £120,000 we will be able to run the programme again in 2014-2015.

It’s great to be able to continue this good news story!”

At the start of the summer holidays, with the sun out, it is difficult to think ahead to the Christmas holidays and how different that will be but that is what a local organisation is doing.

Coming togetherCommunity Christmas believes that no elderly person in the UK should be alone on Christmas Day unless they want to. Whatever your age they would love to hear how you would like to spend your Christmas and how your community comes together to make it a positive time for everyone – it might be popping round for a cup of tea, or laying on a large group lunch.

While you are out in the garden, talking over the fence, think

ahead to when the curtains are drawn and we tend to forget about our neighbours. ‘If we use this chance to think ahead to Christmas we can create more cohesive communities that benefit all of us throughout the year. Thinking about it the week before Christmas will be too late;’ says Community Christmas founder, Caroline Billington.

Is your networking not working? So if you accept networking does, why might it not for you? It could be your approach, where you are networking or your message!

networking requires you to contribute in order to make it happen. The passive approach will not work and it pays to set goals; what is it you want to achieve? With that in mind follow this approach:

rESEarCHWhat networks are there near you? how often do they meet? how much does it cost?

ExPlorETry out your chosen networks and discover how they work.

Networking is largely essential aspect of business and when it works it can be a beautiful thing that can transform your business.

Nigel Morgan is a former journalist and police

press officer who has run public relations consultancy Morgan PR for over 12 years and creates reputations for businesses using PR, social

media and networking. Visit www.morganpr.co.uk, call

01635 812069 or email [email protected]

CommitDecide which networks you are going to use.

lEarnAttend any training and have one-to-ones with successful members.

bE gEnErouShelp others and you will reap the reward.

rEviEWAt least quarterly review what you are getting from networking – and act!

While I have been successfully networking for over a decade, it was only two years ago I properly discovered BnI, the world’s

largest networking organisation, and was asked to become a Director Consultant, so I help grow chapters and members’ businesses across Berkshire, but pricipally at BnI Bourne in Thatcham.

Remember that networking should be fun – especially if you are doing something that you truly love!

If you want to know more? Try www.bni-berkshire.co.uk or www.networkinginberkshire.co.uk to find networking opportunities near you – perhaps I’ll see you there?

Starting your own business

Each year many people make the brave decision to start their own business.

Not everyone is a natural entrepreneur but have the belief that they can earn more money or have the flexibility that being your own boss can bring. With such a change there are no guarantee of success and planning plays such an important role.

A business plan will look at the financial aspect of ensuring the venture will work and you achieve the desired earnings. There is also the aspect of funding, will external borrowing be required to get it off the ground. It will highlight your customer base, who are you going to be selling or providing services too. Your own qualities, what makes you stand out from the competition.

DecisionsOnce you are confident enough that it will work there are decisions on the legal structure of the business. Will you trade as a sole trader, a partnership or a Limited company? Each brings its own risks and benefits, especially in the way you are taxed. You may also decide that you need to take on employees and all of this requires registering and ongoing compliance with HM Revenue & Customs in a number of areas.

At LJ Smith Accountants we aim to support our clients through every step and assist them to make the right decisions to suit their own individual circumstances. - Gavin Rowellwww.localbuzzmagazine.com

“He was my best friend. I loved and

admired him for nearly 60 years, however it wasn’t until he died

at the age of 85 that I realised I hardly

knew him.”

Jackie Osborne discovers not one, but two remarkable men. She was amazed how well Chris looked following his debilitating mini-stroke in March. Your local Buzz is proud to talk with Chris as he introduces his new book ‘Dad’s War’, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings and Fathers’ Day 2014. From his father landing on the beaches in France, through to being awarded his Military Cross, his book poignantly and emotionally commemorates not only his father’s true courage, but also of the many young soldiers that bravely battled and lost their lives.

After the sad loss of Chris’ mother, Chris returned to her home to find she had been burgled, which would set him on a journey of discovery. “My father’s beautiful desk had been ripped apart. I found a diary dated back to 1944, Dad’s record of his own World war.”

Following filming Channel 5’s ‘A Hero in the Family’, Chris

Virgin Books

‘Dad’s War’ is published by Virgin Books. Editorial Director Kate Moore comments, “I feel hugely privileged to be publishing this book. The writing balances action with a raw emotion which is immensely moving.”

Chris Tarrant said: ‘This book is about dad, the wonderful times I had with him, and what I’ve learnt about him since he left us. The research has been a labour of love, but hard because so many of his contemporaries have died.

I have learnt so much about those who died so that we could be free – so much that I am ashamed about how little I knew. It’s an extraordinary story about an amazing man, written by someone who thought they knew him best.’Published by Virgin Books -

Remarkablewanted to know more – to fill in the gaps. Spending the next two years researching, Chris soon discovered that his father was well-admired and respected as an Officer. “It was truly fascinating. The idea of my gentle father in a savage bayonet fight in Arnhem was incredibly difficult. It was emotionally draining to visit the place he was blown up on a landmine, just three weeks before the war ended.”

Heart-wrenchingly, so many people around his father were killed. “How did he manage to survive?” Chris really feels that it was based on luck. “He was truly extraordinary and I have to say that handing a copy of my book to my kids has been the proudest moment of my life. It’s been wonderful to record it all, along with my thoughts on how the World has changed.”

Abbey School twins are Young Scientists of the Year

The girls impressed a judging panel that included Nobel prize-winner Sir Tim Hunt, with their work on a project to develop an early diagnostic tool for cancer.

Aneeta and Ameeta, who are planning to study medicine at university, carried out their project at Oxford University with the support of a Nuffield Bursary. Work will continue there to develop the uses of the protein that they were researching.

The girls are among many at The Abbey who enjoy studying Science; Biology and Chemistry are among the most popular A Level choices. Bucking the national trend Physics is also a popular choice for girls at The Abbey, particularly those who are planning careers in Engineering and other STEM fields.

Sisters Aneeta and Ameeta Kumar have been awarded the prestigious Young Scientists of the Year Award in the National Science and Engineering Competition, announced at the Big Bang Science and Technology Fair.

When your teen tweets or posts a picture to Instagram, he or she probably doesn’t think about how it might affect her tomorrow, let alone how it might affect her chances of getting a job. The hard truth is, that what we send into cyberspace can be difficult to erase.

Many employers now use social media profiling to screen potential employees. Vetting a candidate’s social media profiles can give employers an insight into someone’s personality, character or work ethic.

If your teen’s profile is not set to ‘private’ it will be accessible to a potential employer and their content found through search engines like google. This is true for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

It may be unfair and discriminatory but it happens, and even fairly innocuous material might be judged harshly by someone who doesn’t know the person involved.

You can help by getting involved in your child’s social media presence. Become familiar with the tools they use, and offer advice to save them from making mistakes which may be difficult to correct. The good news is that you can help your teen clean up their social media sites before they get ready to apply for joTake an afternoon to go through each social media profile and delete any inappropriate photos or comments. There are some software products which can help, like SimpleWash, though these generally don’t apply to photos.

Social Problems

There is a joke doing the rounds which goes

something like: The best thing about being a teen

in the 1980s is that we made all our big mistakes

before the internet was invented! There is much

truth in that.

Keep just one social media profile where you post personal information.

Make sure main profile photos and cover photos are conservative.

If something is even slightly questionable, do not post it publicly.

Be careful what you ‘like’ or comment on. If the person posting has a public profile your comment will be visible too.

Make your public image one you’d be happy to show to anyone, even your great granny.

Don’t accept friend requests from people you don’t know, or if you must, then put them on a ‘restricted’ list, but remember that privacy filters on social networking sites are subject to change and are not fail-safe. Check filters regularly.

Lady Carnarvon felt it was important for a variety of charities as well as countries to have a presence on the day – “We hope as a result of this day at highclere, to make a positive contribution to the lives of those in the war zones today, to help them in their struggles to cope with what they have suffered and to demonstrate our support for them.”

Thrilling aerial displays begin with the Red Devils. A fly-pass by the Dehavilland Tiger 9, followed by The great War Team re-enacting dog fights, the iconic Spitfire will grace the skies with a Mustang and B17 following close behind.

Visitors will be able to step back in time with over 200 re-enactors in period costumes creating a ‘living history village’, the Castle ha-ha will be turned into a trench, there will be field kitchens, and Second

World War military police will be patrolling the grounds. In the music tent West Berkshire Brewery will be serving traditional ales using war time recipes, and an additional

music and dance area will host performances from the Spitfire Sisters, newbury Rock Choir and 20’s music and dance lessons taking place all day.

Heroes at Highclere will be a fantastic family day, with vintage fairground rides, themed catering and a shopping village. For more information see our website www.localbuzzmagazine.com

donnington GroveThe Donnington grove estate is set in 500 acres, a delightful and secluded position on the outskirts of newbury .

The present house was built by James Pettit Andrews between 1763 and 1772 to designs by John Chute. A great venue for all occasions or just a night away, Manor house suites from £95.

GolfThe course was designed by the Welsh Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas, who has been responsible for several renowned courses, including the Brabazon at the Belfry.

It is a good test for golfers of all levels and is always in excellent condition. Or why not practice on the range along side the lake and resident swans.

FishingOne of the great attractions is the beautiful River Lambourn, that runs through it.

This is the classic example of a perfect trout chalk stream; not too wide, bright gravel bottom and gin-clear water.

time for

Lack of time is the top reason I hear as to why you don’t exercise. A genuine reason for most of us but I promise that if you stop for a moment to plan your day you will find some. It might just be 10 minutes in the morning, at lunch or after the kids go to bed but that can be enough!

Once you have found that 10 minutes here’s one great way to fill it! With a mix of upper body and lower body your heart rate will increase and you will burn calories!

6 repetitions of each exercise x 4 sets, short rest, then 4 reps x 4 (and if time 2 reps x 4).

Squat JumPSBend your knees with your weight over your ankles, bottom back and jump up, land softly back into the lower squat position.

PrESS uPShands and toes on floor, keep body straight in this plank position. Bend elbows then push up back to start. easier option on your knees.

Important note :

You will need to warm up and cool down after every workout. Do a few of the exercises you are about to perform but with lower intensity. Make sure you feel a bit out of puff before you start. Once you have cooled down make sure you hold each stretch for 20 seconds.

StEP uPSuse your stairs, a chair, a bench or even just stepping forward and back. Same reps on each leg.

Plank Walk uP

Plank position on hands and toes (or knees) place one elbow down then the other, then one hand and the other so you end up back at the start. (down and up = 1 rep).

When you see an advert for mascara, you’ll know that the model or celeb featured has eyelashes to die for.

however you’ll also know that even if you buy the mascara, you’re unlikely to achieve the same effect. This is because the model actually has eyelash extensions in place. Thankfully you can now achieve the same great look for yourself.

Semi-permanent eyelash extensions

These extensions are attached to your natural lashes to leave them looking longer, thicker and fuller. They can last anywhere from 6 to 9 weeks depending on the life cycle of your natural lashes and allow you to do all the usual things in life such as swimming and even crying. each lash will fall out with your own lash and therefore in-fills need to be applied to keep your eyelashes looking beautifully long and thick.

eyelash extensions

The Eyelash Queen is highly trained and able to attach your eyelash extensions in a careful manner, so they have no effect on the health or longevity of your natural lashes.

protectyour skinSummertime is the time to prepare and protect your skin from inside as well as out.

Laurabella 01635 291211 www.laurabella.co.uk

If you burn easily try every day eating a heaped table spoon of tomato purée in your food. After 3 months your skin should de sensitise from a high burn to a medium to low burn.

Body Scrub

On the outside it is good to scrub your skin 3 times a week. This increases the circulation and takes away dry dead skin so your moisturiser can penetrate deeper and work more effectively.

Start off with a Laurabella scrub and rub and we will show you how it’s done.

BrazilThe location for the FIFA tournament and a journey to the exotic and flamboyant Rio de Janeiro is a must for any visitor. Football fun can be enjoyed with the locals on the beautiful sandy beach with a refreshing stop at a typical beach bar to sample fresh tropical juices and the Carioca way of life.

Overlooking Rio are the Corcovado mountains, site of the statue of Christ the Redeemer, and a cable car ride up Sugar Loaf mountain offers an amazing vista of Rio below.

Many travellers combine their stay in Brazil with a stop in the elegant and passionate Buenos Aires in Argentina and a must is a visit to the awe-inspiring Iguazu waterfalls - shrouded in their own

mist as they thunder amid tropical jungle stretching for kilometres along the border.

An 11 day trip to the wonders of the new world starts from £2395 per person but, of course outside of the Carnival and World Cup dates!

costa ricaCentral American country offers an intense and tropical wildlife experience like no other, with its colourful collection of mountain peaks, forests, sandy beaches and large reefs all cramped into a small country.

experiences include a stay in an ecolodge in the densely forested Corcovado national Park, within touching distance of the capuchin monkeys, and a visit to the Cano Island Biological Reserve to see humpback whales, sharks and dolphins frolicking offshore.

italyAnother team in our group - a Country known for its delicious food, wine, cars and beautiful scenery.

September is a great time to visit Tuscany - a night in Pisa to see the Leaning Tower, a train ride to Florence for a 4 night stay and time for the uffizi museum, a stroll over the Ponte Vecchio and a climb up the 400 plus steps if the Duomo for fantastic views over the city.

Collect a car and spend a further 6 nights in Siena - a great place in its own right particularly to sample pizza in the xxxxx square but well placed for day trips to

San gimingnano and wine tasting in Chianti - all this for just £2200 for two.

now prepare the asparagus by snapping the woody base from the shaft. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil and blanch the spears until yielding to your paring knife. Refresh in iced water. Keep the cooking water aside for the raviolis.

For the ravoli filling: Blow the dust and sand from the Morels and quarter them. In a non-stick pan bring 100g of butter to foam and cook the chopped shallot without colour, add the morels and cook gently for 1 minute, season with white Pepper and finish with chopped parsley. Remove form the heat and check seasoning for salt, add if necessary.

Roll out your pasta dough to around 1.5mm thick (you may use a pasta machine for this) and using a 78mm and a 58mm round cutter cut 8 of each size disc. Divide the morel filling into eight portions and place them onto the smaller disc, brush the edges with

water and then top them with the larger discs. Take care to make sure there is no air trapped inside, press the tops down and seal. Set aside.

Season the inside cavity of each wood pigeon with sea salt, white Pepper, a Bay leaf, two Juniper berries and a broken clove of garlic. Rub with a little extra virgin olive oil and season with sea salt and white pepper. In a small non-stick pan brown the birds in 100g of foaming butter. Transfer to the oven at 180Deg C for 8 to 10 minutes basting occasionally, they must be pink removed as you will reheat them. Allow to rest for 5 minutes then remove the legs and breasts. (keeping the carcass for soup another time) Place the legs and breasts onto a tray and place in oven to reheat 5 minutes before serving

Re-boil the asparagus water and cook the pasta for 2 minutes, remove. Re-heat the asparagus in the same way but for 1 minute only then transfer both to a pan with 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, 1 Tbsp chopped French tarragon and 50g melted butter to glaze them. Put them on a plate, add the pigeon meat, 2 legs and 2 breasts per portion, top each with 2 slices of the ventrêche ham crisps.

Pigeon meat was eaten when other food was rationed during the Second World War.

In the world of antiques, tradition is a word often used and the market town of Hungerford is no different. It has always had the reputation of being known as one of the UKs traditional antique towns featuring traditional antique shops selling traditional antiques.50

This is not the case however when visitors to the Bridge Street shop of William Cook, a family antique business now in its fifty first year of dealing, discover when they walk through the front door.

fossils dating more than 120 million years old. The effect can be dramatic, exciting and distinctive.

William added, today the traditional view of antiques is changing but one thing remains constant. That is good quality, whatever the age or type of item, is always good quality and this is a consideration we always keep at the top of our list when buying our pieces.

With the dealing side being run by William Cook and his two brothers Richard & Stephen taking care of the families internationally renowned antique furniture restoration business, William has developed a reputation for sourcing, displaying and selling unusual objects and works of art that compliment wonderfully the wide range of fine quality 18th and early 19th century furniture on which the family name was originally built and indeed is still known for today.

William explains, as well as retailing from our shop we now

I travel and buy extensively and as a result a visitor to our shop in Hungerford may see amongst formal English antique furniture a large framed Union army flag from the American Civil War, a Chinese Han period terracotta horse over fifteen hundred years old or a collection of ammonite

but for how long?

In our new regular property feature, ourproperty editor talks about the things that are important to you, our readers, as homeowners or soon-to-be homeowners.

In this edition we consider the state of the market and ask the question on everybody’s mind - namely is the ‘bubble’ about to burst once again?

Property is backFrom boom to bust in theblink of an eyenot so long ago the property market was spiralling downwards and negative equity was a worry for millions. now, all of a sudden, the market has recovered, inflation is rampant and there is already talk of a bubble. Its almost as if the race is over before its even begun! Is now a good time to buy or will we face a mountain of negative equity if it all goes wrong again? Should we fear another crash when we have just started to recover from the last one?

Can property keep going upin value?Fear’ is a revealing word because our attitude, usually ‘boom or bust’ (and little in-between), turns what should be small predictable market adjustments into big swings. Whist the market looks chaotic though, in the long term fundamentals such as supply and demand, affordability

and economic growth are the main determinants of property value. The uK population, due to a mixture of longer life-span and immigration is growing by almost 1/2 million every year and with this comes great housing demand. This inevitably causes inflationary pressure especially given the supply challenges.

On the supply side, companies like mine rely on the market and individual property owners to bring potential land forward for development. The more land that comes forward and the more sensible development is allowed, the more prices are held in check. Otherwise, excess demand and economic growth continue to drive prices upwards resulting in affordability problems and overcrowding.

For more propertyinsight speak to Sean atthe Buzz website blog.

Should I take the plunge now?So demand continues to outpace supply, the economy is growing and affordability is also good. Mortgage repayments as a percentage of income are currently at 27.6% against a long run average of 35.9%. Just before the crash in 2007, this number was 47.7% (its no wonder the lenders became worried). The only real concern for now has to be that interest rates will start to rise to more normal levels and affect affordability. This should result in a ‘soft landing’ but sentiment again can play games with us and we could see more ‘boom’ and ‘bust’ cycles.

Property will almost certainly keep becoming more expensive after the cycles are averaged out though. So yes, get on the ladder if you feel ready and build some equity. The market is still playing catch up so it’s a good time. Make sure when you do though that you can afford a rate rise (or fix your mortgage) and think about your plan to deal with other eventualities that could affect your ability to pay your mortgage. Be prepared for downward as well as upward adjustments and always think long term not short term.

futurE EditionSHow high can property go and why isproperty such a good investment?Speak to Sean

During Quarter 1 of 2014 house-prices rose by 1.47% from the previous quarter. That’s a rise of 6% over one year.

Prices are now only back to late 2003 levels but recovering quickly.

We are still over 20% below the last peak however.

Plan for a 2% mortgage rise by 2018 starting in early 2015.

Sweet Feetfor summer

We’ve kept them hidden in shoes and boots all Winter, but when Summer comes it’s good to put on a pair of sandals or flip flops, or perhaps even walk around with bare feet.

So, how can we make sure our feet are in tip-top condition and feel confident about showing them off to all around us?

The terms are interchangeable, but strictly in the uK, ‘Podiatrist’ is a reserved title meaning that it can only be used by those registered with the health Professions Council. Inside the profession, chiropody is used to suggest the routine processes of foot care, whilst podiatry is indicative of the higher skills and academic levels.

l Cutting your toe nails short. The use of clippers is generally recommended. nails should be no more than a couple of millimetres over the edge of your toe.

l next, file your nails using an emery board. File them so they are smooth, neat and square.

l It’s good to soak your feet in a bowl of warm water and use a foot scrub or lotion to get them clean and feeling smooth and silky.

l Various tools and devices are available to help you file hard and crusty skin to make it smooth. At home and at a beautician’s this is likely to be a pumice based product. A chiropodist is more likely to use a blade.

l Apply moisturising cream daily and massage it in well, including between the toes. Let it dry before

Once any medical issues have been eliminated, you may wish to keep up the look and condition of your feet through pampering at home, or a trip to the beautician for a pedicure.

Regular maintenance tasks should include:

putting on socks or tights, as persisting dampness can cause fungus or athletes foot.

l Once a week, gently push back your cuticles with a cuticle stick to keep your toes healthy.

l If you want to beautify too, you can apply polish to your

toe nails. Some polishes have nourishing qualities.

l Make sure you remove traces of any previous polish with an appropriate remover.

l Toe separators can make the job of applying polish easier.

l Ongoing measures for foot health include putting your feet up after shopping sprees or long walks, and making sure shoes fit properly to prevent blisters or crushing of toes.

If you have a lot of rough and hard skin, foot conditions such as athletes foot, fungal nail infection, an ingrowing toe nail, calluses, corns or verrucas, a session or a number of appointments with a chiropodist or podiatrist is recommended.

choose the right garden furniture

Having the right garden furniture

can really enhance the

hours we spend in our gardens in

the Summer.

Knowing the function of your furniture can help you decide whether reclining padded beds, a sophisticated dining table and chairs, or relaxed informal seating is what you need. Of course it may be a mixture of all of the above, in which case you will need to look for versatile combinations.

The amount of space you have available should also be taken into account. You might drool over a fantastic sofa with matching arm

To help you decide what you need, consider how you will spend most of your time outdoors. Will it be daily alfresco dining with the family, weekend barbecues with family and friends, or just you relaxing in the sunshine with a good book?

weatherproofing. Metal items require less maintenance, but have the disadvantage of being hot to touch in the sun. Some colours of plastic furniture also become hot, and plastic may become brittle if left outside in all weathers. Wicker and rattan pieces will need greater protection from the wet and are more easily damaged.

Cost of course will also be a factor. Plastic items are usually the cheapest, but it is generally true that you get what you pay for in terms of longevity.

Several materials offer a variety of colour choices. Remember though that white and silver reflect the light so can be uncomfortable to look at in the glaring sun, and black absorbs the heat so can become very hot. The safest colours are therefore mid-greens, greys or natural wood. Many prefer muted tones, adding style and personality through bright cushions and tablecloths.

chairs in a catalogue, but do you really have the space to accommodate it successfully, or would smaller fold-away seats be more suitable? In addition to your outdoor space, think about where you will store your furniture in Winter. Whilst vinyl covers can protect your furniture from Summer showers, it really is best kept in a shed or garage during the worst weather. This is where fold-away pieces can be incredibly practical, or in some cases, you may be able to take pieces apart for storage too.

When considering the material of your furniture, consider durability and maintenance as well as appearance. Wooden furniture is popular and versatile, but needs regular

Whatever you choose, don’t go on appearance alone. The most stylish items won’t get used if they are incredibly uncomfortable. So do try out your intended purchases in-store to ensure they will help you to enjoy the outdoors, and not leave you fidgety or stiff.

As we celebrated Lamborghini’s 50th Anniversary last year, just 200 Aventador LP 720-4 50° Anniversario were made as a limited edition to the Lamborghini family. These cars featured an increased engine power of 720 bhp, achieved through a new engine calibration, enlarged and extended air intakes and aerodynamic splitter, further enhancing the performance and experience of the 6.5 litre engine.

This summer we welcome the all new Lamborghini huracán, Lamborghini’s first 7-speed dual-clutch transmission V10, featuring the latest in driver focused technology, to follow its predecessor, the Lamborghini gallardo.

“It’s a no brainer. If you know a bit about geology you can look at a landscape and see beneath it; look at the ocean and see to the depths; look at a coastline and see the remarkable ways in which the landscape and the ocean interact.

And you can see the ways in which the landscape influences the life that inhabits this small blue dot, not just now, but into the deep past. Geology expands your ability to see the world in all four dimensions. I wanted to be a geo from high school.”

Dr Tony Webster, Industry Geologist

We are delighted to have at our doorstep, The newbury geological Study group that arranges trips to sites of geological interest.

Trips are normally day trips within 100 miles or two hours driving time from newbury. They also have weekend trips to sites which cannot be visited in a day. For most trips, Dr. Les James of the university of Reading provides the geological expertise. Membership is open to all and it is not necessary to have any knowledge of the subject or to live in the newbury area.

Trips are designed to be both educational and fun and to give the opportunity to see geological structures at first hand. handouts are usually provided and they normally have the geological maps of the area available. All aspects of geology are covered and they sometimes do some practical work such as testing soils or measuring river flows.

The season runs from October to July. There is a £10.00 fee per person per trip payable on the day (children under 16 are free).

Forthcoming Day TripsSunday 22 June 2014 - Chepstow Area Sunday 20 July 2014 - Chase end hill, Worcestershire.
