date news from where youare!

Where To Get Dear ReadersA very warm welcome to this weeks ‘Buzz’ readers. I was waitinguntil this evening which is "Deadline Tuesday" to write my little piece. The reason being was I waiting to get as much up-to-date informa-tion as possible on the results of local elections. Why you might ask?Because for me, a local business and also the local residents includ-ing the large number of British Ex-Pats, it is very important to under-stand who will be in charge of the decisions that will effect us. I havetalked to many British residents here in the local communities whodecided to vote for the first time and you know, I actually felt proudto hear that our voices are actually being heard and counted. Ourvotes do count and in the case of majority of local town halls, theBritish Ex-Pat votes could make all the difference to the results.Read the full story inside and follow the ongoing news each week tosee how things actually end up, after all, of the further negotiationsthat will unfold in the weeks to come when forming the new leader-ship. Well there are a few locals town halls that know where theystand and can carry on business as usual. They include Alfaz del Pi,La Nuica and Javier. I also wanted to say to our readers how amazed I was last week atthe amount of people who took the time to congratulate me and theBuzz team on the acquisition of Heat FM radio station. Apart fromsome negative reports that were directed from our newspaper com-petitors, I can thank the sincere and loyal readers and advertisers fortheir ongoing support. It will be exciting times over the next fewweeks as locals in Moraira see the new Weekly Buzz signs beingerected at the Heat FM studio offices opposite Pepe La Sal super-market and the announcement of our celebration party in nextweeks issue. We will also be printing our summer Heat FM road-show schedule, bringing the Costa Blanca's Number 1 radio stationto you in your town. To remind you again it's 90.3 FM Altea to Benidorm and also on106.8 Calpe to Denia. Tune in for our daily competitions and most ofall great hit music. PP AND PSEO BOTH LOSE OUTContinued from page 1

The Spanish press isreflecting after all theresults that the PP whichis the equivalent of theConservatives and thePSEO – Labour, bothperformed poorly andlost many votes tosmaller individual par-ties.

The PP remained the mostvoted group but were thebiggest losers nationwide. Prime Minister MarianoRajoy appeared before thepress on Monday eveningannouncing that he hadtaken a decision: that

there was no need tochange anything within hisparty, only to “be closer, and communicate more, with Spaniards.” His mes-sage was that he would bedoing nothing to alter thestructure or composition ofthe government, nor theleadership of his party, because in his opinion, thePP had done a great job inthe difficult times of crisisin which the electorate hadchosen them to lead.

Lots of candidates werespotted by press, castingtheir votes early onSunday morning hoping tocreate enthusiasm for their

party. There was someshocks and disappoint-ments as there is with anyelection however only fourtowns in the region man-aged to win an outrightmajority, meaning thatthey got over 50% of theircouncilors in – Alfas del Pi,Finestrat, Javea andTeulada. The others allneed to go into coalitionwith another party to havea majority – or in somecases even that still won´tbe enough. Benidorm is aprime example and couldsee it virtually ungovern-able, as the PP wouldneed the support of a fur-ther 2 parties to give it a

majority, although TonyPerez (PP) is the likelyreplacement of the Mayorjoined in coalition withAgustin Navarro. In thelast election in 2011 it tookalmost a year to jointogether in a coalition withGemma Amor.

The emergence of somany small independentparties has broken up thehold that the two main par-ties had – PP PSEO. Butat local level it is the per-son rather than the partywhich residents vote forand what they have donefor the community.

BY TOWN THE RESULTS ARE AS FOLLOW:ALFAZ DEL PI – PSEO majority: PSEO 12, PP 5, Cuidanos 2, CET 2. 6051 voted = 58% turnout.ALTEA – No majority: PP 7, Compromis 6, PSOE 4, Cipal 2, Altea MMB 2. 8982 voted = 65% turnout.BENIDORM – No majority: PP 8, PSOE 7, CBM 3, Cuidanos 3, Liberales 2, Compromis 2. 25,374 voted = 57% turnout.CALPE – No majority: PP 9, PSOE 4, Gent de Calp 2, APPC 2, SSPC 2, Compromis 2. 7641 voted = 54% turnout.FINESTRAT – PP majority: PP 8, PSOE 4. 2462 voted = 60% turnout.JAVEA – PSOE majority: PEOE 14, XD-CPJ 4, PP 2, Cpmpromis 1. 9538 voted = 59% turnout.LA NUCIA – PP majority: PP 13, PSOE 4, Cuidanos 2, Compromis 2. 6912 voted = 57% turnout.TEULADA – No majority: PP 9, Movimento Red 4, PSOE 3, Compromis 1. 3569 voted = 46% turnout.VILLA JOYOSA – No majority: PSOE 6, PP 6, Cuidanos 3, Compromis 3, GPV-CS 2, EUPV-CS 1. 14,622 voted = 64% turnout

Depreciation of Eurohelps Spanish exportsSpanish goods exportssoared in March, aftermonths of modestresults, to reach a newrecord of €23.2 bil-lion, making it thebest export monthin the current his-torical series, saidstate secretary fortrade JaimeGarcía-Legaz.

The figure also rep-resents a 12.5%expansion on thesame month in2014, and coincideswith slower growth ofimports (6.3% for a total of€24.1 billion).

The positive numbers haveslashed the trade deficit to€890 million.

In March, the euro cameclose to parity with the dol-lar, trading at $1.05, andremained below $1.10 formuch of April, raising thelikelihood that exports will

continue to do well for atleast a month more.Exports to other EuropeanUnion members that are

not part of the euro zonegrew an annual 17.6%,compared with 9.8% in thelatter. Sales in LatinAmerican countries suchas Chile, Mexico andDominican Republicexpanded 37%, whileexports to Asia grew aswell – 33% in China – asdid sales in the MiddleEast (51%), partly thanksto aircraft purchases bySaudi Arabia and the

United Arab Emirates.

“Other countries that alsouse the euro export signifi-

cantly lessthan Spain;as is Franceand Italy’scase,” notedG a r c í a -Legaz, whoneverthelessadmitted thatthe lowereuro helps.“But some-thing morethan that is

going on with Spanishexports.”

According to the trade sec-retary, that somethingmore is the increased com-petitiveness of Spanishbusinesses, accumulatedover the last year-and-a-half.

“And not just in terms ofprice and cost, but also inproduct quality,” he said.

CHEAPEST HOLIDAY DESTINATIONIS THE COSTA BLANCA

Spain’s Costa Blanca was the cheapestholiday destination in 2014.

This is evident from data thatwere announced by theMinisterio de Turismo(Ministry of Tourism). In2014, the average touristspent 864 euros for anine-day stay at theCosta Blanca.

That is 36 euros lessthan the Spanish aver-age and substantially lessthan in other beach desti-nations like the Costa Brava, the Costa del Sol and theBalearic Islands.

While it is positive that, even in the yearsof the worst crisis, the Costa Blanca con-

tinues drawing many tourists because ofits attractive prices, the

Department of Tourist Studiesof the University of Alicante

reckons it’s about time thatrates at the Costa Blancawent up.

The prices of manyhotels and restaurantsare have not risen since2008 and that means

they work with ever small-er margins and cannot

invest in improvements orrestorations.

Benidorm – theBenidorm Town Hall hasreceived two applica-tions last week to openprivate clubs where itwill be possible tosmoke marijuana.

This year kicked off withthe opening of the firstclub in Benidorm where itis allowed to smoke mari-juana.

Apparently both the TownHall and the customerslike the idea, becausethere are now two newrequests on the table. The"Centro Cultural La Casade Marley", located incalle Marqués de

Comillas, is a big successand there are no com-plaints about it. The Townhall wants Benidorm tobecome an "openEuropean city withouttaboos" and to give roomto this kind of entertain-ment.

Are you a Brit enjoyinglife in Spain? BlakewayNorth, the team thatmade the hugely suc-cessful Benidorm ERseries for Channel 5are back in Benidorm tomake a brand new doc-umentary series.

A spectacular fire brokeout near the top of abuilding in Benidorm onSaturday afternoon.

The alarm was raisedaround 4pm on Saturdayas the blaze engulfed thetop floor of the Ipanemabuilding on Avenida Dr.Orts Llorca.

According to sources of theProvincial Consortium forFire Prevention andExtinction of Benidorm, thefire started on the nine-teenth floor, which hasbeen completely burned byflames.

The building was evacuat-ed, as the intense smokeincreased filling floorsabove and below com-

pletely from the eighteenthto the 20th level, there hasbeen no reported injuriesor casualties.

TOP FLOOR INFERNO

Something a lot oftourists have been wait-ing for is the use of a freeWi-Fi connection on thebeaches of Benidorm.

The town hall is cooperat-ing with a company toinstall the so-called"smartwifi" on a part of theLevante beach. The townhall considers “Smartwifi”as something ideal, as it’sfree of charge.

This means that, a special-ized company installs andmaintains the WI-FI, whilethey register data of theInternet users in order tofigure out which social net-work is the most used, what websites are visited, etc.

The first project will startthis summer on theLevante Beach, to beexact between Torrejó,

Calle Bilbao andthe area aroundthe mirador delCastillo, tourist’sfavourite spots.Should this be asuccess thennext year all

beaches in Benidorm willget free Wi-Fi. Benidormtook the city of Barcelonaand Palma de Mallorca asan example for installingfree wifi connections onbeaches.

In particular, Mallorca hasthe longest beach with freeWi-Fi at 38 points over alength of 10km. BetweenMay and November theWi-Fi was used at least300,000 times.

Should free Wi-Fi get pop-ular on the Levante beachthen chances are that theproject will also move tothe city itself in the future.

BENIDORM WORKERS REUNIONLee and Helen owners of the Pig n’Whistle held a milestone Birthdayparty last weekend for one ofBenidorms longeststanding members of theBenidorm Workersreunion.

Whilst enjoying their fifthreunion in Benidorm.Shirley Frost along with herfriends and family celebrat-ed her 60th birthday instyle at “The Pig” where she drank as ayoung girl in the seventies, just asBenidorm was beginning to burst into aholiday resort and only had a few tiny barsand dirt tracks for roads.

The party spilled out into the street afterShirley's friend Sue got everyone in theparty mood as she sang a few of Shirley'sfavorite tunes. Celebrations lasted intothe early hours, as Shirley insisting to bethe last one to leave as she didn’t wantthe celebrations to end!

Everyone had such a good time thatMichael Britain one of the workers, sug-gested to throw one big birthday party sothat the reunion workers could all cele-brate their birthdays together as one onthe same night. So Lee and Helen got prepared and helda Birthday Bash for everyone in “The Pig”.They organized all the music, food andgames including adult pass the parcel, a

balloon modeling competition, jelly andice cream shots. Everyone had a crackingnight and look forward to doing anotherBig Birthday Bash next year.

This is the third Benidorm Workersreunion that Lee and Helen have wel-comed which started in 2011 when one of

the members MichaelBritain decided to set up athread on trip adviser asalias 'jettyman' to try andgather those together thatworked in Benidorm in theseventies just as Benidormwas transforming itself in aholiday resort.

They now all meet in May each year andnumbers grow and grow each year. Mostof the workers worked in bars and wereprops, and if you stand close enoughwhen they gather against the large stonepillars that have stood for over forty years, you can hear the nostalgic whispers of thestories that they tell, which always ends inbelly aching laughter bythem all.

The Pig n Whistle is veryimportant to them as ithas held its name andstature for over fortyyears Lee and Helenhave ensured that thepig remains as it waswhen it first opened withits traditional large thickoak bar and woodenbeams. The Benidorms Workers, all said“it still has the same feeling, as if they hadjust walked in there for the first time over

forty years ago.”

After work they would all gath-er in their favorite locals suchas Mars Bar, Ex bar, Melodica,Hawaii 5-0 and Bar Calou, allof which apart from the MarsBar have now changed namesand some are no more. This iswhy the pig is so important tothe workers as they can comeand sit in the same seats asthey did many years ago listen

to the same music, remain together, sharestories and leave through the windowyes…the window. This is how they did itback in the seventies and to this day still

leave in the same fashion.

Lee and Helen feel so very proud to havesuch important guests in there pub eachyear, as without these people who knows,“The Pig” may not have survived throughthe years, as it was these customers thatafter they had spent their time inBenidorm went back to the UK andspread the word and have continued to doso for forty years and still do to this day.

Lee and Helen would like togive special thanks to allShirley's friends and familywho travelled to celebrateher milestone birthday andassisted the pig bar staff indecorating. They wouldalso like to thank bee beebrewer for supplying the pig

balloons, PasteleriaAlakcons of the IndoorMarket for supplying thecake and finally LindaCotteral, Peter Skelton,Sue Parsons and MichaelBritain whom organizedShirley's birthday to ensureShirleys party went off witha bang.

When you visit the old townLee and Helen will be thereto welcome you at the Pig n’Whistle as you step back intime and listen to yourfavourite music in one ofBenidorms oldest traditionalBritish pubs, now serving

IPA on draft and a large range of real ales. Also new for the summer Peroni &Thatchers now on draft. This is a pub notto be missed on your visit to Benidormand has just been given Certificate ofexcellence Trip Advisor status for contin-ued excellent reports, please visit them onFacebook for opening times and to seewhat fun others have had on their visit tothe old towns best kept secret.

A Barbecue for AftersThe Javea Players'Summer Show(Monday July 6 toSaturday July 11)offers a remarkablypleasant way tospend a summer'sevening. What can benicer than diningalfresco in a charmingwalled courtyard andthen enjoying a huge-ly entertaining play inan intimate and verycomfortable theatrejust a few steps fromyour dining table?

Your dinner will againthis year be served inthe lovely Plaza Baixby the highly regardedBar Imperial. A firstcourse of patasbravas, jamon andqueso, croquetas de

bacalao and ensladamixta; your choice ofcostilla de cerdo orgrilled dorada; postreand a half bottle ofwine.

Afters will be a barbe-cue in the garden ofthe Bulbins on thestage of the Casa deCultura. No ordinarybarbecue this. TeddyBulbin would be morti-fied if you thought itwas. He sees himselfas being something ofa barbecue king, aman who barbecuessteaks to heavenlyperfection. And, couldany barbecue that isthe creation of AlanAyckbourn be ordi-nary? Of course itcouldn't. A man who

has been knighted fordelighting theatreaudiences with hisinventiveness and witfor more than fiftyyears doesn't do ordi-nary. He doesn't doone act plays ofteneither – just four sofar. So, this barbecueon the Casa deCultura stage really isa bit special. It is high-ly entertaining too.

The Alan Ayckbournbarbecue is a frivo-lous comedy of fun, infidelity and foodfights. It is called 'TheKidderminster Affair'because this Midlandtown is where the infi-delities took place. Ina Travelodge wouldyou believe? Well,

where there's a willetc. The Bulbins andtheir guest and nearneighbour, theBottlecamps find littleto laugh at as thesecrets of theK i d d e r m i n s t e rTravelodge arerevealed but you will.Plenty.

Dinner in the PlazaBaix each evening isat 7 pm. The cost ofyour evening, dinnerand this new AlanAyckbourn play is just15 euros and thatincludes a 1 eurodonation to Cartitasand The HarvestStore. Book early on96 646 2876 or [email protected]

The craft people setting up in frontof Correos feel fairly sure that theweekly fair will work in the comingyears. There were not that manyvisitors during the first five months, but the ones that did come, camespecifically to look for the genuinecraft work that is the speciality of allAmata markets. Many came toorder something special, whichsometimes could be made on thespot, at other times could be col-lected one or two weeks later. Thelittle market begins to be a knownmeeting point for people who arelooking for individually made itemsand the artesans who make them.

In the summer this meeting pointwill be in the port of Jávea, on thesea front at the end of the AvenidaJaime I. This will be the third year

that Amata will be running theircraft fair (Artesanía de Autor) in thePuerto; every evening from 7o`clock onwards some twenty stalls

PEPE LA SAL GIVING BACKAlmost eight years ago now,Teulada Moraira Lions first moot-ed the idea of a food voucherscheme to go some way towardsalleviating the very real hardshipwhich the onset of the economiccrisis inflicted on a good numberof families living within theTeulada-Moraira area. Supermercados Pepe La Sal werequick to offer their assistance andsupport, without which it is unlikelythat the scheme would ever have gotoff the ground.

That initial commitment from PLShas strengthened over the years tothe extent where, as well as beingintegral to the success of T.M. Lions´food voucher scheme, which lastyear was expanded to includeBenitachell, this local, family run, supermarket chain regularly donatesto T.M. Lions significant quantities offresh and frozen foodstuffs which arenearing their "sell-by" dates. T.M.Lions, in turn, work closely withCaritas in Moraira to ensure that thisfood goes to where it is most need-ed.

In addition to working directly withTeulada Moraira Lions, PLS offer

their loyalty card customers theoption of gifting their accumulatedloyalty points to nominated charities, including T.M. Lions, instead ofredeeming them against the cost ofgroceries in the usual way.

This initiative has proven so suc-cessful that T.M. Lions President,Colin Lilley and the Club´s PLSLiaison Officer, John Evans, wereinvited along to PLS´s flagship storeon the Ctra. Moraira Calpe on 21stMay to be presented with a chequefor €825.00, being the value of the

loyalty points which PLS customershad kindly gifted to T.M. Lions. At thesame time, PLS also presentedcheques to the President of La CruzRoja; the Chairman of theManagement Board of TheAlzheimer Centre, Teulada; and amember of La Protectorad´Animales, Benissa.Congratulations and a big THANKYOU to Supermercados Pepe La Salfor being so committed to helping thecommunities within which it oper-ates!

The visit was to find out what the noisewas about as sometimes you onlyknow what people are saying if you canfind out for yourself. So for me, it wasto experience the fantastic offer of athree course menu for only 11.95€.

The menu choice was enough to satisfymost people's taste and for me it was thehomemade soup. I chose the tomato, although theother choices ofonion soup andvegetable wasalso attractive. Our other starterchoice was mac-aroni bolognesethat had a gener-ous portion ofmeaty sauce andwas served witha separate bowlof grated parme-san cheese.Together with ourstarter, was abasket of crusty bread with creamy tangyaioli.

The choice of main course included Pizzaof the day, a choice of pasta, fish andmeats. I just had to go for the slow cookedshoulder of lamb served with chips andvegetables.

Our other choice was the Pizza of the daysimply because we know so many of ourreaders love Pizza we really wanted to beable to tell you about our experience andwe were pleased to say that the Pizza wasthin and crispy, baked to perfection and

generously covered in a deep rich meltedcheese and topped with ham and mush-rooms.

The shoulder of lamb simply fell from thebone with its tenderness. There was plen-ty of meat that was absolutely delicious. We were pretty full after the enjoyment ofthe starters and main course, but includedin the menu was either a dessert or cof-

fee. I cannotresist the temp-tation oftiramisu orchocolate cake,so, in fact, wehad both to try -light and fluffy. Both dessertswere extremelytasty and sweetto finish our per-fect Sundaylunch.

The restaurantwas gettingquite busy dur-

ing our visit, so we were pleased that wearrived before 2pm, and then the tablesstarted to fill up creating a vibrant andatmospheric dining experience overlook-ing the blue ocean view across to thefamous Ifach rock at Calpe. Manypassers-by stopped to view the menu, probably planning their evening dinner.

Andrea and his team welcome everyoneto come and enjoy a real taste of Italy atEl Italiano Altea, experience the qualityItalian cooking and a wonderful diningexperience.

Pizzeria L'Originale Avenida Doctor Orts Llorca, Benidorm

“Just as described on tripadvisor”Reviewed 20 May 2015Great freshly made pasta. Beautifully presented dessert. Bothat a reasonable but not cheap price. Only downside is road-works in street outside and fact thst we went one night to findit closed so do check before a visit. Visit howver is really welworth it. We will go back.

“Amazing Italian food withgreat service”

Reviewed 20 May 2015We headed here following the great reviews on Trip advisorand thank you, we were far from disappointed! On headinginside the decor is a little understated but wow the warmth ofthe welcome is excellent. The fresh menu was explained andwhilst limited I could of eaten everything. We chose the cap-rese salad to share and it was so simple yet so incredibly deli-cious. I followed up with the lasagne, now as lasagne is one ofmy favourite dishes I've eaten it far and wide but this was upthere in the top 3!! Unfortunately we didn't have room fordessert. The meal was great value for money, outstandinglytasty and the service was so welcoming and friendly. I wouldn'thesitate to recommend this place to anyone!

“Best pizza in Benidorm”Reviewed 16 April 2015Came here on holiday last week to Benidorm was the bestpizza I had ever tasted and is such great service, they work sohard for such a small place and do well. We liked it so muchwe came back twice in the same week. Well done, highly rec-ommended.

“Great Little Place”Reviewed 10 March 2015We hunted this place down due to the good reviews, when wearrived there was only one table left which we were given, wenoticed how many people came looking to eat here but wereturned away due to lack of space. The owner and staff were all very helpful suggesting differentthings to try instead of just pizza, I tried a couple of dishes andwas pleasently surprised (trouble is I cannot remember whatthey were called) I followed this with a few slices of pizzawhich is a great idea as they have a few pre cooked pizzasready to eat so a selection can be tried instead of just one.If you fancy trying this place it might be a good idea to be veryearly or book, I will be making a return visit here very soon.

Satari'sCalle Dakar, 1 Moraira

“Probably the best restaurant inMoraria - John.”

Reviewed 24 May 2015Our first visit this year, it was as good as it always is. The foodwas first class, the staff as always very accommodating. Theowner Abby comes and talks to everybody in the restaurant aswell as working in the kitchen.

“Noticed the sign”Reviewed 7 May 2015Only found after noticing the board on the road. My wife foundit one of the best restaurants we dined in. Steak again, relaxedatmosphere, friendly staff. Obviously we returned.

“Polished excellence”Reviewed 10 April 2015We were greeted by Stephane the manager who was welcom-ing and who's supporting team managed the whole eveningwith a polished professional attentiveness. The menu is diverseand the two fixed price menus at €16.95 and €22.95 are reallygreat value and quality...the starters were tasty and the maincourses we chose of lamb shank, which fell off the bone with arich sauce (just to the 5 star brigade) was delicious on a bed ofmashed potato flecked with cabbage, and my chilli chicken driz-zled with a tasty thick sauce and seasoned chips was verytasty. With a sorbet and dessert it enough for anyone. A reallyfine relaxed and enjoyable meal...worth a go - GP

“Excellent Sunday lunch”Reviewed 28 March 2015Couldn't fault anything. Great ambience, lovely food and greatservice. Live music which is great to see. The owner clearlyknows what it takes to makes a restaurant somewhere youreally want to return to.

“Sunday roast”Reviewed 28 March 2015We were invited here by friends and thoroughly enjoyed thewhole experience. From start to finish we had no problems at all. The beef wasmelt in your mouth and the veg cooked to perfection.Beautiful food in beautiful surroundings.Really hope we can get back.Very friendly staff.

FOOD AND DRINK

La Siesta D'AlteaCalle San Pere 36 Bajo-2 Altea

“We'll see you next time...”Reviewed 3 May 2015There are many splendid restaurants around Altea, but wewalked past them all to get to La Siesta. It's not the biggest, it'snot the cheapest restaurant on the seafront, but it has a specialmagic that kept luring us back. The service is quite extraordi-nary. Owners Caroline and Diego between them speak a num-ber of languages and use them to make every guest feel spe-cial. Our morning coffee was served as I have never seen itbefore, on an individual tray with a glass of cream, a biscuit anda glass of water and was good enough to convert this sea-soned tea drinker. On a subsequent visit, we found the housespecial burger, deliciously fresh from Diego's kitchen, sufficientto satisfy two. Didn't get round to a steak, but watched a fellowdiner licking his lips in appreciation. Back to the service. Thiscan be a little slow, as Caroline loves to chat just as much asguests love to chat with her. But she is such a good conversa-tionalist that the meal is inevitably enhanced by her. The menuis quite limited yet as the place opened only this season. ButCaroline assured us that any special requests can be cateredfor with a minimum of notice. As I write this in dreary oldEngland, I feel the urge to call in again. See you soon Caroline.

“The Hidden Gem In Altea”Reviewed 28 April 2015Went there for lunch today, after reading the reviews on TA.Was not disappointed had one of the nicest steaks, in fact Iwould rate it as in my top 5 and the wife and I are very welltravelled. Very friendly staff all food cooked fresh and very rea-sonable prices. We have already booked a return visit. Be sureto check out this hidden gem. Ian & Christine

“Brilliant little restaurant.”Reviewed 22 April 2015On a recent visit to Benidorm we went to Altea, one reason totry this little gem. The lovely couple running La Siesta have gotthings just right in my opinion. The service was personal, thefood great and the beer cold and flavourful. Had the best food of our entire trip here. Best wishes for yourfuture success, you deserve it.

“Excellent service and food”Reviewed 18 April 2015We visited this bistro, following the TA reviews, during a recentstay in Altea. The owners are working hard to provide goodquality fresh food, accompanied by welcoming service. Theburger and fish and chips were excellent, accompanied by littletouches including home made tartar sauce. Well worth a visit.

The Latest BUZZ from the Motoring World

Suzuki is in the midst of a bold assault on the UKmarket, and the Vitara is a key new model for theJapanese manufacturer. It joins the firm's bigger S-Cross in the small SUV class, pitched againstrivals such as the Citroën C4 Cactus and RenaultCaptur.

We've already tried the Vitara in 1.6 petrol form onlocal roads, so now we're driving the 1.6 diesel onand off road in the UK. Does the Vitara still standout in the small SUV class, and does it offerSuzuki's traditionally strong off-road ability forthose of an adventurous disposition?

What’s the 2015 Suzuki Vitara like to drive?

At 118bhp, the 1.6-litre diesel engine may not sound par-ticularly powerful for a car this size, but it’s very well suit-ed to the Vitara. It’s a bit rattly past 3000rpm but it'll easilyhaul four people up to motorway speeds and becomesmore hushed once you’re up to speed.

The high-speed refinement elsewhere is disappointing, though; there's a lot of road noise and wind noisewhipped up around those big door mirrors.

Paired with this 1.6-litre engine is a six-speed manualgearbox. Happily, the diesel's plentiful torque makes thisVitara flexible in gear, so you won’t have to be constantlyshifting through the ratios when driving around town.

2WD comes as standard on the diesel, but you're able toupgrade to Suzuki’s 'ALLGRIP' all-wheel-drive systemwhich can be added to range-topping SZ5 trim for anadditional £1800.

If you opt for the all-wheel-drive version, then you canselect from three different driving modes; Auto, Sport andSnow/Mud. Sport mode noticeably sharpens up the throt-tle response and makes it a bit more eager to rev in gearwhich helps overtaking on faster B-roads.

Even if you do decide to go for the AWD version, econo-my figures remain impressive. The 2WD diesel versionemits just 106g/km of CO2 and this only rises to 111g/kmon the ALLGRIP.

Along with the all-wheel-drive option, the Vitara also getssome additional off-road equipment that many rivalsdon’t offer; however, it is only modestly capable off thebeaten track.

The AWD system works well, as do features like Hill HoldControl and Hill Descent Control, but you would be illadvised to buy the car purely for its rugged capabilities.

It’s rather an added extra that is handy tohave on the rare occasion you may find your-self with some rutted fields to cross.

What’s the 2015 Suzuki Vitara like inside?

The Vitara lags behind its rivals on interiorquality, with lots of cheap-looking hard plas-tics on the dash, and the infotainment sys-tem isn’t particularly responsive or intuitive, which makes using it on the move challeng-ing.

For interior space, though, the Vitara out-does many of its rivals. The 375-litre boot

capacity beats that of the Citroën C4 Cactus, RenaultCaptur and Nissan Juke. It’s comfortable and spacious inthe front, too, with great visibility forwards and back-wards.

Two different trim levels are available on the diesel Vitara- SZ-T and SZ5. Rear privacy glass,17in silver paintedalloy wheels and an infotainment with smartphone con-nectivity and sat-nav comes with SZ-T.

Forking out an extra £2500 for SZ5 gets you luxuriessuch as LED headlights, 17in polished alloys, suede seatfabric, keyless entry with start button, adaptive cruisecontrol and a panoramic sunroof.

There’s also a lot of room for personalisation. You canchoose between 10 body colours as well as a number ofother exterior and interior features, like the colour of thefront grille and an interior clock design.

Treating prickly heat

Prickly heat is not a serious conditionand rarely requires any specific treat-ment. The rash usually disappearsafter a few days.

However, there are several things youcan do to ease your symptoms:

• Cool your skin down with acool bath or shower. This will soothyour skin and prevent further sweating • Wear loose cotton clothing inhot weather and avoid synthetic fibressuch as nylon and polyester• Drink plenty of fluids – avoiddehydration

• Use calamine lotion to sooth areas that are mostaffected• Try a low strength hydrocortisone cream but avoidusing on the face and do not use on babies• If you are particularly troubled consult your G.P. whomay be able to prescribe antihistamines.

PRICKLY HEAT

With the end of Springand the approach ofSummer the heat andhumidity is with usalong with the problemof prickly heat!

Prickly heat, also knownas miliaria rubra, is anitchy rash of small, raisedred spots that causes astinging or prickling sen-sation on the skin.

Although prickly heat canoccur in the winter, it’s atthe height of the summer when it can be most trouble-some. This is because it usually develops when a personsweats excessively and the body's sweat glands becomeblocked. The trapped sweat causes skin irritation and thecharacteristic heat rash.

Prickly heat can develop anywhere on the body, but itmost commonly occurs on your face, neck, back, chestand thighs. The symptoms of prickly heat are usuallyworse in areas that are covered by clothing. This isbecause clothing can make you sweat and sometimescauses friction (rubbing).

The rash is made up of tiny spots or bumps that are sur-rounded by an area of red skin. The spots sometimeslook like tiny blisters and can cause:

• mild swelling• itching• a stinging or intense prickling sensation

Obviously you are more at risk if you are in a hot, humidcountry (such as Spain in summer!) but the following fac-tors will also increase your risk:

• illness and immobility – long periods of time spent inbed can make you sweat more• wearing too much clothing, particularly in the winter• sitting too close to a fire or heater• being overweight or obese – which is more likely tolead to excessive sweating

Babies and children are also more at risk of getting prick-ly heat, because their sweat glands are not fully devel-oped.

However, the festive period is one wherewe often introduce all manner of excitingitems into the house that we don’t nor-mally have. Some of these things can bepotentially harmful to our dogs and it’sworth knowing some of the common pit-falls.

COMMON CHRISTMAS FOODDANGERS FOR DOGS:Grapes

Exactly why and how these are poison-ous to dogs is unknown and the exactvolume needed to cause symptoms isdifficult to predict. Some dogs will eatone or two grapes and become seriouslyill but others can eat many of them with-out apparent signs. The only way to besafe is to keep them out of reach of yourdog.

Christmas Pudding,Christmas Cake andMince Pies

These Christmas fanciesare bad for dogs for anumber of reasons:

Firstly - they are jam-packed full of currentraisins and sultanas. These are all a variationon the ‘grape’ and assuch have the same seri-ous health risks. It iscommon for them toingest far more ‘grapes’in this form than theywould fresh grapesbecause there are somany packed into thesecakes and they aresmaller.

Secondly - they are fullof fat, suet etc which canoften give them severestomach troubles, vomit-ing etc but also, moreworryingly high fat meals

are one of the high risk factors leading topancreatitis. This can be a very seriousand costly disease to treat.

Thirdly – they are usually laced with largeamounts of alcohol which can causemany of the symptoms of intoxicationseen in people.

39PETS CORNER

Let’s face it – dogs bark. Some dogs bark for a goodreason and some do forapparently little or no reasonand some do a little of both.

Of course there are also certain breeds that are moreprone to barking than others. The dog problem is notalways the barking but the need for dogs to be quiet atcertain times or when asked.

Why dogs bark - Dogs bark for a variety of reasons. They may be giving a warning to another animal, sound-ing an alarm, playing or instigating play, joining in theexcitement of the moment, demanding a reaction (evenusing it as a command), doing it on command, out of fearand the need to drive another animal or object away, andsometimes dogs bark just for the sake of barking. Onoccasion it can be a combination of any of these. Whenpuppies bark it can be insecurity after leaving the pack.We don’t necessarily want to stop dog barking though.

Barking for the right reason - With all of these differentforms of barking there are a variety of approaches we cantake to ensure the barking is for the right reason and wecan prevent dog barking when the reason is no longerthere. To gain confidence the owner has to get to knowhis dog and the situations that create the barking. With

this understanding, an owner can demonstrate calm, con-fident leadership and take control in the right way. Fromthe very beginning of our dog/owner partnership, weshould be building a foundation that allows such trust andconfidence. Remember that dog barking is one way thedog communicates to us, so we do not wish to preventdog barking but we do wish to control barking as required.

How to stop dogbarking - There areseveral ways to stopexcessive dog bark-ing. If you have a dogthat will bark and‘sport’ at people orother animals, a headhalter, such as aGentle Leader that

enables you to close his mouth and guide him into anacceptable behavior is a big advantage. Introduce thehalter so your dog accepts it willingly and, when anunwanted bark happens, lift the leash so the dog’s mouthcloses and he is guided into a sit. So, we stop dog bark-ing, we gain attention and we redirect to an acceptablebehavior in one simple step. Another way to keep yourdog’s mouth closed is to encourage her to bring a “pre-sent” to you, a guest, or someone in your home; or to sim-ply to encourage him to enjoy carrying objects. Naturallydogs cannot bark when they are holding a toy. But becareful not to give the toy when dog barking is in progressor the dog could mistake the toy as a reward for barking.

Bark on command - Another approach that can work isto teach your dog to bark on command, or “speak,” andthen command him to be quiet. If you use treats or evenverbal praise – do wait a few seconds after dog has fin-ished barking before rewarding him. What you don’t want

HOW TO CONTROL DOG BARKINGhim to think is that he is being rewarded for barking whenreally he is being rewarded for being quiet. Have him ona leash during the exercise so that you can distract andstop the barking with a light pop of the leash. Dog barks, owners says “Quiet,” and he stops barking, showing he isunder control. When the door is opened he is sat watch-ing and waiting for anything that could be a threat. Oneword - “Speak” - has him barking again. So by teachingthe commands – “Speak,” “Quiet,” and “Place,” – youhave a dog that is both under control, yet ready to give awarning or even threaten if required.

Create distractions - There hasto be something that breaks theconcentration on the barking. The interrupter in that case maybe another noise, such as usinga tool that emits a high frequen-cy sound when the dog barks. This is not a pleasant sound to

the dog and interrupts his barking. A can with pebbles orcoins in it, can provide the interruption too. The dog barksand this loud object lands on the floor in front of him. Nowhe thinks every time he barks for no reason or if he con-tinues unnecessarily, something falls from the sky. Youcan use everyday objects. If your dog barks near to you, slam the cupboard door or a drawer, so the noise dis-tracts or startles him. You don’t want to scare the dog, justquickly alter his state of mind and change the focus. Heshould not see you launch the object or make the noise. An important part of this is that if you do drop or throw anobject it should not hit the dog, but land at his feet. Youshould also leave it there for a while so he does not relateit to you. Remember though that you have to be able tounderstand and translate the different barks. One of hisbarks may be – I need to go to the bathroom. So learn tounderstand the tone of the bark or noise he makes.

ENGLAND CONFIRM BAYLISSAustralian Trevor Bayliss has been namedthe new head coach of the England crick-et team and will start work next month.

The 52-year-old is currently head coach ofNew South Wales but he will take up hisnew post ahead of the Ashes seriesagainst Australia, which gets underway onJuly 8.

Caretaker coach Paul Farbrace, whooversaw England's thrilling first Test victo-ry against New Zealand, will remain incharge for the second Test, which startson Friday, and the subsequent limited-overs matches, before becoming assis-tant to Bayliss.

Bayliss will replace Peter Moores as per-manent head coach, having edged out hiscompatriot Jason Gillespie, who was seenas the early front-runner for the post."It's an honour to be appointed Englandcoach," said Bayliss.

The experienced Bayliss has won theSheffield Shield twice with New SouthWales and worked with Farbrace during aspell in charge of Sri Lanka, who he guid-ed to the 2011 World Cup final.

He has also enjoyed great success in theT20 format, steering Sydney Sixers to BigBash and Champions League success in2012, and won the Indian Premier Leaguewith Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 and2014.There will be not be much of a honey-moon period for Bayliss, whose first taskwill be to regain the Ashes from Australia, who thrashed England 5-0 when the sideslast met in 2013-14.

HARTLEY MAY MISSWORLD CUP

Dylan Hartley's participation in the WorldCup has been plunged into grave doubtafter the England hooker was cited for anunprovoked headbutt in his club's AvivaPremiership semi-final.

Hartley thrust his head into the face ofopposite number Jamie George during anoff-the-ball incident that unfolded in themoments after Northampton had scored atry through Tom Wood in their 29-24defeat by Saracens at Franklin's Gardenson Saturday. George appeared to beunsighted at the time and the incident pro-voked an angry response from severalSaracens players, but neither refereeGreg Garner nor the television match offi-cial took action despite viewing replays.

Hartley must appear before a RugbyFootball Union disciplinary panel inCoventry on Wednesday evening and withthe entry point sanction for the offencestarting at four weeks, his involvement inEngland 2015 is under serious threat.Hartley has an appalling disciplinary

record having missed virtually an entireyear of his career - 50 weeks - throughsuspensions incurred for a range ofoffences including gouging, biting andabusing a referee.

If the hearing sees the 29-year-oldNorthampton captain found guilty, discipli-nary regulations state that any ban mustinclude matches.

The minimum sanction of four weekswould mean he misses all three warm-upgames for the World Cup, starting withFrance's visit to Twickenham on August15.

Gareth Bale expects to be 'back next seasonBale has endured a difficultsecond season at Realand has come in for criti-cism from the club’s fans.

He was defended by for-mer Real coach CarloAncelotti, per Reuters (viathe Guardian), followingmore whistles during the

second leg of theChampions League semi-final against Juventus.

The player’s agent,Jonathan Barnett, perJohn Percy of the DailyTelegraph, has alsorecently insisted that Baleis not planning to leave,

despite his troubles thisseason.

But Sky Sports punditCharlie Nicholas feels Balewould be open to returningto the Premier League andthat United should go all-out to sign him. Nicholassaid, per Sky Sports:

“If you want to make a seri-ous statement, then youneed to throw everything atgetting Gareth Bale. He'sthe sort of player that cancreate a massive excite-

ment and help Unitedmake an immediate impactwhen they return to theChampions League. I thinkBale would be open toreturning to the Premier

League, even if he would-n't say it.”

Bale also confirmed hisintention to be at Real nextseason via his officialTwitter account.

Although the bookies favorite is United, Chelsea arealso apparently interestedin the Welshman.

MERCEDES TAKE BLAMEFOR BLUNDER

Mercedes has apologisedto Lewis Hamilton after astrategic error cost thereigning Formula 1 worldchampion victory in theMonaco Grand Prix.

Hamilton was cruising towhat would have been hissecond success aroundthe streets of thePrincipality until a crashinvolving Max Verstappen

and RomainGrosjean on lap 64brought out the safe-ty car.

Even though only 14laps of the raceremained at thatstage, Hamilton wasbrought in to take ona fresh set of super-soft tyres, and heemerged not only

behind Rosberg, but alsoSebastian Vettel in hisFerrari.

Although the duo were oncold and older tyres by thetime the safety car pulledback in with eight lapsremaining, there was noway past for Hamilton onhis fresher rubber.

Asked 'what the hell hap-

pened there?', Mercedesmotorsport boss Toto Wolffreplied: "What the hell hap-pened there? That's exact-ly the right question."The simple answer is wegot the math, the calcula-tion wrong. "We thought we had a gapwhich we didn't have whenthe safety car came out,and Lewis was behind thesafety car. The calculationwas simply wrong, hencewhat happened. In Monaco, you have noGPS and that makes thewhole exercise more diffi-cult. This is why we got itwrong when it switchedfrom the virtual safety intothe safety car. I went tosee him in the scrum and Isaid 'apologies for thatone, it goes on the team'. Itwas all good between us."
