IAB and IAAP around the world

A feature of the Annual Awards event in London is the International Development Meeting. The event is key for international centres, enabling them to keep updated with the latest developments in the world of IAB and IAAP, network with other centres and meet the Head Office team, including the Associate Directors of International Development.

A host of representatives from all over the globe came together for the event. This year people attended from Iraq, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, India, Malaysia and China, an endorsement of the international appeal we have.

Head Office team members had prepared detailed presentations. Rianan Hogg explained the administration procedures and discussed methods to improve these in collaboration with Centres. Thomas Bird introduced the Certificate Validation which can now be found on the IAB website: www.iab.org.uk/qualification-checker-certificate-validation-service/. There is also a Certificate Validation page on the IAAP website: www.accountingprofessional.org/qualification-checker-and-certificate-validation-service.

This allows any student to confirm their IAB or IAAP qualification immediately, ultimately proving the validity of their certificate to any prospective employer in any country at the click of a button.

International Vice President, Malcolm Trotter concentrated on developments and plans for the coming months. A highlight of this will be the introduction of RQF qualifications into the overseas market, with the intention to appoint Centres willing to trial these and collaborate in successful implementation. Malcolm also informed the delegates that the IAB has released an updated version of the Level 4 Certificate in Accounting to International Standards qualification, available already in English and Russian.

Max Lee and Andy Eames travelled to the event to share their experiences and expertise in supporting the centres in the regions they cover. The focus was on how Centres can increase market coverage, and how to encourage students to go on and study further IAB and IAAP programmes. The opportunity to develop one’s own programmes responding to regional needs and have these programmes quality assured by IAAP is a key area

of business potential.Guest speaker Christine Vaudrey, Head of

International with Liverpool Vision, invited Centres to organise delegations to attend the International Business Festival, which will be held in Liverpool in June 2018, and which is committed to assisting small medium size enterprises to establish global connections.

After a networking buffet lunch, Geoff Barclay focused on the opportunities open to Centres to further their own businesses and to consolidate their relationship with IAB and IAAP in the best interests of students. Particular attention was drawn to the opportunities in membership recruitment and the establishment of regional hubs to further promote activity.

IAB and IAAP around the world

In September 2017, Malcolm Trotter travelled to Malaysia to meet with a new centre, Sunway College Kuching. Sunway College chose to offer IAB qualifications to meet the growing demand for bookkeepers in Malaysia. While there Malcolm also met with the Second Minister of Finance, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh who stated that Sarawak is in great need of qualified finance professionals.

Wong noted that Malaysia requires 60,000 bookkeepers by 2020 but at present there are only 33,000 bookkeepers nationwide.

He said: ‘Organisations in any industry, be it

banking, retail, manufacturing, e-commerce or

online, require skilled accounting personnel to

accurately record transactions, balance the books,

and prepare true and fair financial statements.’ Wong said he hopes the MoU will help

produce more bookkeepers for Sarawak, and provide local students with more opportunities to complete an internationally recognised professional bookkeeping qualification locally.

Speaking about the MoU and becoming an IAB accredited centre, Sunway College Kuching CEO Joseph Lim said: “Sunway College will demonstrate that its classroom teaching system provides quality support to learners towards IAB qualifications.

‘We will work with IAB to stimulate interest

among students in Sarawak to pursue finance as a career and to come into the IAB programme.’

Malcolm said that there is an increasing need for skilled workers in this era of global economic growth and rapid technological development.

He added: ‘Employers say that graduates lack

employability skills, meaning people do not have

the immediate skills that make them attractive,

ready to work and technically competent.’

The key to success in offering IAB and IAAP qualifications is attracting students who require the in-demand skills and knowledge which the qualifications provide. By teaching the qualifications you are helping to provide vital skills to individuals around the world to enable them to launch a new career or progress within their current chosen career.

If you’re looking for ways to increase the number of students on your courses, below are some ideas which you might like to consider: •  Work closely with your IAB/IAAP regional

representative to gain further understanding of the IAB and IAAP qualifications. This will enable you to offer the qualifications which best meet the needs of your target audience and will therefore be easier to market. Our representatives can also work with you to establish the right business model to help your centre succeed.

•  Use the IAB and IAAP’s marketing materials to help promote the qualifications you offer. Online versions of these materials can be downloaded by logging into the Centre Area of the IAB website: https://www.iab.org.uk/login/. These materials are available for you to use for marketing as you wish. If you require copies of these items sent to you in the post please let us know. Should you wish to add your company logo to any of the marketing materials we can also provide you with the artwork so you can edit this.

•  Let us know about any events you have arranged such as graduation ceremonies. A member of the IAB and IAAP team may even be able to attend to assist with the presentation of certificates. Feel free to share with us photos from the events and articles as we can then share these within our various communications channels, to promote the success of your centre and students.

•  Share news from your centre with us so we can share this with our centres, student members and professional members around the world. You might have news on initiatives you are working on to support more individuals to access employment opportunities, updates on how you are responding to particular national circumstances (government regulation, professional standards, career choices) etc.

If you have any questions about any of the above ideas or would like to share with us any news items or photos from events please contact Kelly Orford: [email protected] or +44 (0)1732 897750
