The class is held in the Religious Education Building, Room 7 at 7:30 PM. Adults are baptized and confirmed at the Easter Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation. RCIA – Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: A process for those who wish to enter the Catholic Faith, or for present Catholic individuals who after being baptized need to receive the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
First Reading: Deuteronomy 26:4-10 Moses discusses the power God has displayed in freeing his people from oppression and leading them to a rich land. He tells the people that they should make offerings to God to show their gratitude, then celebrate over the great things he has given them. Second Reading: Romans 10:8-13 Paul tells us that if we proclaim, "Jesus is Lord" and truly believe that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved. For God shows his mercy toward everyone who calls upon his name. Gospel: Luke 4:1-13 Jesus fasted in the desert for forty days, then Satan appeared to him and tempted him to turn stone into bread. After Jesus refused, Satan promised him great powers if Jesus would worship him. Jesus replied that he would worship God and no one else. Then Satan tried to persuade Jesus to put God to the test, but again Jesus resisted his temptation.

From the desk of Fr. Ginel First Sunday of Lent
Lent has begun! It seems like we just ended Christmas when here we are, again, beginning the great penitential season of the liturgical year. This is the time the church asks her children to prepare themselves to celebrate the great mysteries of our redemption. As Advent is the time given us, to truly prepare ourselves for the celebration of the Coming of our God in the flesh, so Lent is presented to us, as an opportunity, to truly prepare ourselves for the celebration of Easter. Most of us give little thought to our ultimate encounter with God upon our death. Seldom thinking about it, it is the one reality which will befall us all; it is everyone’s fate. It is the moment when we will all have to give an account of our lives to God. What a wonderful chance we have here and now, given us by the Church, to take stock of our lives and to prepare ourselves for that encounter. In order to alleviate any fears or doubts, and to provide us with revealed truths that bring hope, the church leads us to Jesus Christ and the hope he brings and offers us of eternal life. In our first reading, we are presented with the teaching of gratitude to God for all his blessings. These acts of thanksgiving extend all the way to the New Testament, where we see that at every Mass, “we give thanks to God” for all His blessings. But how can I give thanks if I do not know why or for what am I giving thanks. The Gospel pictures Jesus undergoing the trial of being tempted by Satan. Showing himself to Jesus at a vulnerable moment, Jesus being very hungry after a forty day fast, tempts him to use his power as God to alleviate his hunger. When Jesus refuses to use his power for his own benefit, he quotes scripture saying that “one does not live on bread alone.” Satan continues to tempt Jesus, but now, since he did not reveal himself as God, he tempts him as a man, by offering him wealth and great power. Again Jesus rebukes him. In so doing, Jesus has left us an example to follow. Taking Sacred Scripture into account, Jesus quotes it, telling us the importance Sacred Scripture should have in our lives. Do we ever read the Bible? Remembering others’ needs before our own, which Jesus teaches us by word and example, should be a part of our lives. Rejecting needless power and wealth, for one’s benefit alone, is presented for our consideration. Thus, penance with a twist for charity can be something for all of us to consider in our Lenten practices: remembering the poor, the hungry and others as well as remembering the dead with our prayers, our offering the stations of the Cross for not only ourselves but for the sick, the suffering and the deceased. A Blessed Lent to all.

ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY NEWS
The Rosary Altar Society holds meetings every first Saturday, after 9am Mass, following the Rosary. We are looking for new members to enlighten our ministry to the Blessed Virgin Mary. All who may be willing to serve, please contact Debbie Caldwell at 928-7681.
ADULT BIBLE STUDY
Our twice a month sessions of Bible Study will resume on Thursday, March 3. As in the past, we will meet in Room 10 of the Religious Education Building from 7:30 until 9:00pm. We will begin our year long study of the Book of Isaiah. Newcomers are welcome to join us. I have three Little Rock study sets available for your purchase. To obtain one, call Pat Conroy at 928-9797.
St. Patrick’s Surf Shack Vacation Bible School (VBS) will be held June 27-July 1 from 9am–1pm at St. Patrick’s Religious Education Building, 26 Hunter St., Highland Mills. Planning has begun and our volunteer teams are forming. This includes moms, dads, grandparents, etc. who are interested in sharing time and talent prior to and during VBS week. As part of our decorating, teaching, snack, craft, music, recereation or games team, volunteers enjoy a relaxed, fun atmosphere while working together to create a memorable, faith-filled week. In addition, teens currently in 6th grade and up (including many college students) repeatedly start their summer by volunteering with St. Patrick’s VBS. Meetings are held once a month on Saturday mornings from February through June. Each monthly meeting lasts about 90 minutes. Our first Volunteer Team meeting was cancelled due to SNOW… Our “new” first meeting date will be held on Saturday, February 13 at 8:30am in the St. Patrick’s Religious Education Building. Whether you can volunteer for a few hours or few days, we invite you to attend our first meeting. Lenten Retreat given by Rev. Gerard P. Travers St. Patrick’s Church in Highland Mills is hosting a mini-retreat of meditation and prayer on Sunday, March 6th from 1-4pm. Fr. Travers, Pastor Emeritus of St. Patrick’s, will lead us as we focus on the Year of Mercy to prepare for Easter. Fr. Travers will celebrate the 12pm Mass followed by a brief gathering in the lower church hall for coffee and cake. We will then assemble in the church for the first session entitled, How do we find God in our daily life? Following a short break, we will experience a guided mediation on the painting of the Prodigal Son by Rembrandt, using the reflections of Henri Nouwen from his book The Return of the Prodigal Son. If you have never experienced this form of prayer, Lent is the perfect time to do so. Fr. Travers will be available to hear confessions immediately following the retreat.
