l'm a woman of routine, particularly in the mornings.I do certain things in a certain way every morning as if l'm crossing items offa to-do list. Get up. Rub eyes. Stumble to the bathroom. Put in contacts.

Wash face. Take shower. Ahd on and on. Even if you aren't a routine-driven

person during the rest of the day, you probably do some of the same thingsevery morning.What if "take up your cross" was-a15o onburTo-do lisf,-right after "takeshower" or "drink coffee"? Jesus asks us to do nothing less in today's Gospel

when he declares we should take up our cross daily. Ugh. l'm not so

enthusiastic about that. Aren't crosses just for some days-those harder-

than-ordinary days? Not every day, Lord. That seems like too much.

But while we may resist, we know the Lord is right.Even Jesus, who didn't carry a physical cross with him every day, carried theburden of knowing his way of life would lead him to crucifixion. He was

aware of what lay ahead for him-but even with that heavy emotional cross,

he still brought healing and peace to so many. He carried his cross withgrace, courage, and perseverance.Jesus doesn't simply tell us to carry oUr c[ossl he also says, "Follow me."Everyone has crosses, but how we carry them makes a difference. Do wefollow him in the way we carry our cross-without complaining, still praisingGod, always seeking to bring life to others? Are we still joyful and hopefulwhile carrying our cross?

A Actually, they do. Saints Peter and Paul are united in a-CL solemnity onJune 29 to honor their martyrdom, but each

has his own feast: the Chair of Saint Peter (Febrwry 22)and the Conversion of Saint Paul (|anuary 25).

Peter's primary is evident in the prominence given to himby the Gospel writers and in the position of authorityentrusted to him in the infant Church.

Jesus promised Peter that he alone would be thefoundation stone, keeper of the keys, and head shepherd(see Matthew 16:18-19 and John 27:75-17), and Peter

oversaw Judas Iscariot's replacement (see Acts of theApostles L:t526). Paul holds a position of honor for his

transformation from Church persecutor to "a slave ofChristJesus" (Romans 1:1).

Saint Augustine wrote that they share a solemnity because

even though they didn't suffer on the same day, theysuffered as one. On different days of presumably the same

year, 67, Peter was crucified and Paul beheaded.

Their esteem coupled them in the early Church'sdevotion. Hence, the solemnity Mass preface states that"each in a different way gathered together the one familyof Christ; and revered together throughout the world,they share one Martyr's crown."

The Feast of the Nativity of St. fohn the Baptist

Only the birthdays of St fohn the Baptist and the Blessed Virgin Mary are

celebrated. All other saints celebrate a Feast Day on the day of their death.Tomorrow's Feast is closely tied to Christmas. In many countries a bonfireis lit and blessed and St. John's role as a forerunner of the Messiah is

remembered. From today, the days become shorter and the nights longeruntil the Feast of Christmas.

"This feast, a segment of Advent in the season of Ordinary Time, makes us

aware of the wonderful inner relationship between the sacred mysteries;for we are still in the midst of one Church year and already a bridge isbeing erected to the coming year of grace." For more information see:
