While it is not aesthetically pleasing nor a perfect replacement for that section it helps supplement the sound until a permanent fix is complete.

DID YOU KNOW… Vatican City has the highest crime rate in the world! With a population around 500 people and a little over one crime per day, the Vatican crime rate is above 100 percent, per capita. Although the fact is shocking it should be remembered that the Vatican is about one square mile in size, and has nearly 20 million visitors annually. Most of the crimes are pickpockets, purse snatching and other petty offenses done by outsiders.

Wednesdays, June 10 – July 22, 10:00 am – 11:00 am Hogan Elementary, 58th and Michigan

Meet in the Visitation parking lot at 9:45 return by about 11:15 Volunteer as often as you like. Please call Steve at 753-5155 x308.

GOLDEN SHAMROCKS KEEP IN TOUCH Members of The Golden Shamrocks Senior Ministry Team will contact all Visitation parishioners considered in their “golden” years by telephone during the month of June. Please welcome their call and let us know how you’re doing.

Youth Ministry CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRY If you have questions or want to volunteer, please contact Kim Causey, Minister for Children & Youth: [email protected] or 753-5155 x306.

YOUTH GROUP We are on summer break from regular meetings, but please join us for service and special events during the summer. Information will be in the bulletin!

Linens ALTAR LINENS HELP NEEDED: There are many gifts in a parish community and many needs. At the moment, we need a few more volunteers to launder and iron the white linen purificators (that look like linen napkins) that are used at Mass each week. We use 24 purificators each week, some towels and one or two tablecloths. This labor of faithful service can be done at home. If you can help one month of the year or one Sunday of the year, please contact Alejandro Manso at the parish office 753-5155 x307 or [email protected]. Also, if you would like to learn more, the linen ministry is having a get together on Tuesday, June 30th in the Sacristy as a way to touch base with each other. Please let Alejandro know if you are interested in attending!

KNIT, GIVE, PRAY JULY 9 at 7:00 pm in Tighe Hall Join others in the parish community to put your knitting or crocheting skills to work and make a difference in someone’s life. The Women of Vis, in partnership with Visitation Pastoral Care, is introducing a Prayer Shawl ministry. Prayer shawls will be created by members of this group and given to members of the parish who are ill, homebound or experiencing loss of any kind. The first meeting of this new ministry will be on Thursday, July 9 at 7:00 pm in the Faith Formation room in Tighe Hall. Everyone is welcome--those who already knit and crochet as well as those who wish to learn. Bring your ideas (and a current project, if you like.) Questions can be directed to Kim Foster [email protected] or Peg Ekerdt [email protected], 753-5155 x309

Sister Parish SAVE THE DATE! TACOS! TACOS! TACOS! The 6th Annual Margaret Giblin Taco Dinner to benefit our Sister Parish in El Salvador is on Sunday, July 19, 5:00-7:00 pm in Tighe Hall. $7 all you can eat.

WEEKLY FOOD COLLECTION FOR Redemptorist Center Next week’s food collection benefits Redemptorist Social Services Center, one of the largest food pantries in Jackson County. They have been serving the poor and elderly in our community for almost 30 years. They help their clients address basic needs ranging from providing food, clothing, utility and medical needs to legal assistance, transportation and senior services. Food assistance is available through their food pantry open Monday through Friday. They are grateful for any food they receive, but they also have a huge need for hygiene items such as toothpaste, deodorant, toilet paper and shampoo.

St. James Place Community Kitchen Everyone is welcome to join us every 2nd & 4th Thursday (next on June 25) of the month, 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. The volunteer schedule is flexible. You can come late or leave early and still be a major contributor. For more information, contact Bill Staggs at 304-3264 or [email protected]

BOB STEINERT CYCLING ACROSS MISSOURI FOR WATER FOR MADRE Clean, healthy water prevents millions from living a healthy life and achieving economic gains. Water For Madre helps bring clean, healthy water to the people of our sister parish, Santa Maria de los Pobres, in the impoverished La Chacra community of El Salvador. June 23- 27 Bob Steinert will dedicate himself to riding 225 miles across MO on the Katy Trail from Clinton to St. Charles to raise money for Water For Madre. This trail is quite flat with a rough, limestone gravel base, symbolizing the flat economic opportunity and the rough challenges faced by these courageous, optimistic families. If you stop pedaling for a minute, you get nowhere. Bob is raising money for Water For Madre, which for $75 can provide a water filter for a family for up to 10 years of clean, healthy water. A donation of only 33 cents per mile would provide a filter for a deserving family. You can send a donation to Visitation Parish, designating Water For Madre, or visit the Bike For Water For Madre donations page at GoFundMe.com/BikeForWFM. You can also follow Bob's journey on his Blog Page, BobsMD.tumblr.com and even read his previous 2013 blog on his trip with the Solidarity Delegation to our sister parish.

Thanks to Vis from CRS for Rice Bowl Donation Dear Father Rush, Thank you for your generous gift to Catholic Relief Services. Your recent donation of $2,387.62 received on May 27, 2015 provides vital support to CRS. Your contribution is essential to our efforts to alleviate human suffering and ease the burdens of overwhelming poverty overseas.

It is clear to me that you are as compassionate as the Good Samaritan in the Gospels of Jesus Christ. Rest assured your good deed is a godsend to our most vulnerable brothers and sisters around the world. We are blessed to have you as a member of the CRS family.

I am inspired that you have chosen to reach far beyond the bounds of your own community to care for perfect strangers in such great need. On behalf of all those touched by your compassion, I offer my deepest gratitude and wish an abundance of blessings and joys.

My blessings overflow, Dr. Carolyn Y Woo President & CEO

SOCIAL CONCERNS GRANT ALLOCATIONS GRANT ALLOCATIONS Visitation contributes funds for small grants in order to offer our support to community based groups whose initiatives fall within the scope of our mission as a Catholic Church. The areas of concern that we support include life, poverty and justice issues based on Catholic Social Teaching. This year 32 $1000 grants have been allocated. Newly funded this year is the Saint Michael’s Center for Veterans. Grants are allocated by the Visitation/St. Francis Xavier Social Concerns Ministry Team. Each of these organizations welcomes volunteers. There are links to each on the Visitation web site.

Social Concerns MENTORING AT TURNAROUND Be a Mentor. Change a Life. For former offenders, some of the toughest times they face occur after their sentence is served. Thousands of men and women are released from Missouri prisons each year without jobs, homes or a support system. Without help, many will end up back behind bars. When you volunteer as a mentor with Catholic Charities’ TurnAround program, you provide vital support that helps clients stay positive and productive. When they succeed, lives and communities are transformed. We’re looking for caring individuals willing to make a one-year commitment. You choose the schedule. Training and orientation are provided. For more information: call 659-8234 or email [email protected] Visitation parishioner, Dr. Tom Cotton, has volunteered at TurnAround for years. Give Tom a call at 444-3099 to learn about his rewarding ministry.

FAITH FORMATION Pope Francis has declared a year of Mercy to begin December 8, 2015. In doing so, he issued a letter that calls each of us to think about God’s mercy and love. In the weeks to come, we will highlight some of the paragraphs of this document, Misericordiae Vultus.

“…Let us not forget the great teaching offered by Saint John Paul II in his second Encyclical, Dives in Misericordia, which at the time came unexpectedly, its theme catching many by surprise. There are two passages in particular to which I would like to draw attention. First, Saint John Paul II highlighted the fact that we had forgotten the theme of mercy in today’s cultural milieu…Furthermore, Saint John Paul II pushed for a more urgent proclamation and witness to mercy in the contemporary world: “It is dictated by love for …all that is human and which, according to the intuitions of many of our contemporaries, is threatened by an immense danger. The mystery of Christ … obliges me to proclaim mercy as God’s merciful love, revealed in that same mystery of Christ. It likewise obliges me to have recourse to that mercy and to beg for it at this difficult, critical phase of the history of the Church and of the world.”[10] This teaching is more pertinent than ever and deserves to be taken up once again in this Holy Year. (#11 Pope Francis’ document on Mercy Misericordiae Vultus:)

Reading the Pope Francis Mercy Letter: The Faith Formation Team has read and discussed Pope Francis’ statement on Mercy. We hope to include the document’s insights as we plan for the coming year and began that process at our May meeting with discussions of the meaning of three words: Mercy, Forgiveness and Justice. The team has agreed to write brief reflections on each. Here is the sixth reflection: The "Door of Mercy" will be flung wide open this year by Pope Francis and all are challenged to walk through. What great symbolism! Each of us passes through many doorways in our daily lives, coming and going with ease. Can we train ourselves to ask for, and give, mercy in equal measure as readily as crossing a threshold? Pope Francis seems to believe that we can...Matt Davis, Faith Formation Team, Chair

Question for our reflection this week: How do I define mercy? How do I explain God’s mercy? Email your thoughts on these questions to Peg Ekerdt or a member of the Faith Formation Team 2015-16.

THE FAITH FORMATION TEAM met on June 8 to welcome new members and continue to plan for 2015-16. As a means of introduction, each member answered the question. What has helped you grow in faith? Because we work to have the Faith Formation Team reflect the diversity of the parish, we hope our answers resonate with you: “The Community helps me grow in faith, coming to Mass, working on this committee helps me, Fr. Rush and his homilies, the encouragement I get from this parish community forms my faith, my faith grows when I am mindful of reminders of God’s presence in my everyday life, the Lenten small groups help me, the offerings of the Faith Formation team, daily prayer, reading America or Give Us This Day publications, reading and praying with the daily Scriptures. For each and every one of you reading this: Would you let us know what helps grow your faith?

The members of the 2015-16 Faith Formation team are: Lindsey Anderson, JoAnn Axtell, Tatia Batz, Andrew Beck, Mary Beth Cicchetti, Matt Davis (chair), Mary Gigliotti, Lorraine Gordon, Sam Grefrath, Shea Hamid, Cade Keenan, Sandie McCray, Steve McFarland, Rick McGrath, Melissa McManamy, Mary Etta O’Neill, and Brent Powell.

SHOWING OUR GRATITUDE “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praise to

your name, Most High.” Psalm 92:2

Gratitude is an essential component of our steward-ship. If we live our life as a disciple of God, then our gratitude for His many gifts should be overflowing. We should be singing His praises and constantly sharing our thanks with Him and others. As a grateful person, we should also be happy. It is difficult to harbor anger or be resentful when our hearts are full of gratitude. When we are happy and thankful, we become more giving and, thus, are better stewards. If we take the time to show our gratitude, we will become better stewards. Share your thoughts on stewardship with me at 753-5155 x305 or [email protected].

Other Income, which includes school donations, fees and fundraising, while under budget by $15,051 for the month, remained over 2.77% ahead of budget for the year to date. Other income for the current fiscal year remains nearly 7.3% below the same 11 months of the 2013/2014 fiscal year, due at least in part to a slightly lower school enrollment for 2014/15. However, enrollment for the coming 2015/16 school year will rebound appreciably in the fall.
