O Come Let Us Adore Him
I am the grandson of immigrants from Ireland. The city of Boston in which I grew up was host to countless immigrants and their descendants from far flung places like Italy, Poland, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Scandanavia to name just a few. Some of us Irish thought we were superior to others especially the Italians. We used to call them derogatory terms and they returned the favor. There was one family on my street who were referred to as DP’s (displaced persons) because they had fled places like Germany and Poland during WWII. We thought of them as not one of “us” and generally didn’t speak to them. Interestingly, I counted as friends or chums some of these “others”, but mainly the ones who didn’t speak accented English. This experience of referring to groups of people as “us” or “them” came to a screeching halt when I enrolled in a prestigious public school which drew “the best students” from all ethnic, racial, and religious groups. Because we all studied languages like Latin, Greek, German, French, and Spanish, we found that our interacting with all kinds of immigrants and their descendants broke down the barriers between us. In seminary, I studied the scriptures and began to realize that I was the descendant of the people referred to as Gentiles in the Bible. The Jews regarded Gentiles as heathens, pagans, unbelievers, and “dogs”. Then along came St. Paul whose personal encounter with the Risen Christ on the road to Damascus led him to a conversion that changed his entire attitude towards gentiles who were treated as “outsiders” and “foreigners”. I learned that Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were refugees when they fled into Egypt to escape the threats of King Herod. From the perspective of the scriptures we all were once “aliens” before being reconciled to God through faith in Jesus Christ. Flash forward now to the 21st century in the USA. News programs make incessant references to immigrants and their descendants many of whom are citizens and many of whom are not. Some Americans, fearful of the danger posed by those who would come to our country to do us harm, want to build walls that will protect us. This is understandable, but it leads to a divisiveness by which we divide people into “us” and “them”. Most immigrants today in central Oklahoma are from Mexico and Central America. Their first language is Spanish and a great many of them happen to be Catholic. Among these are people who grew up praying in Spanish who greatly prefer to celebrate Mass in their native tongue. In time, like all immigrants who proceeded them, that will change. In the meantime, regardless of their legal status, they are brothers and sisters to us in Christ. All are welcome!

Journey of Faith
When we were baptized into Christ we all embarked on a faith journey that leads to eternal life in the kingdom of God. This journey has its ups and downs, its ins and outs, its failures and successes. But we also use this term to describe an engaging process that leads the unbaptized and the un-churched to a deeper life in Christ through the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Later this summer the weekly sessions of JOF will begin with an introduction to Christian life that lays out the fundamental building blocks of faith as we find them in the teachings of Jesus and the church. No one comes to Journey of Faith unless someone invites them. Its time for our more intentional disciples of Jesus to look around at family members, friends, and co-workers who are not presently active members of a church community.

ALPHA
Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet which Jesus referred to when he spoke of himself as The Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. Alpha is also the name of a dynamic course that serves as an introduction to Christianity to believers and non-believers, the churched and un-churchd alike. More than 400 of our parishioners have already experienced the Alpha Course and found that it drew them into a closer relationship with Jesus and with his people the church. ALPHA serves as both an introduction to our Journey of Faith process that leads inquirers to the Sacraments of Initiation, and as a stand-alone learning experience that leads to missionary discipleship. ALL ARE WELCOME! SPREAD THE WORD!

REMINDER
TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WWW.STANDREWMOORE.COM June 25, 2017
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED: WHAT KIND OF PARENT FORGETS A
CHILD IN THE CAR? Lisa McDonald, a computer scientist, was a responsible adult and a proud mother, just like most parents. She was also exhausted and under stress on the morning she inexplicably forgot to drop her toddler, Kenny, off at his daycare. Kenny slept peacefully while Lisa locked the car and walked into her office, leaving him to die a slow, heart wrenching death. The years since have been a living memory for Lisa, left to face the unimaginable tragedy that resulted from an involuntary failing of her working memory.
DON’T LET IT HAPPEN TO YOU! During the past decade, parents of every class and every background forgot their babies in their cars. It happened to a dentist, a social worker, a nurse, a pediatrician and a mental health counselor. It happened to a postal clerk, a police officer, an assistant principal and a college professor. It happened to an accountant, a soldier, an electrician, a construction worker and a rocket scientist. It happened to a pizza chef, a rabbinical student and a Protestant clergyman. Don’t think it can’t happen to you. Don’t let it happen to you.
Go to >Kars4Kidssafety.org> for more encouragement and information.
WATER SAFETY
When you go to State Parks & Lakes for any recreation with your family, think about kids’ safety while in water areas. State Parks, like Lakes Murray & Thunderbird are providing safety jackets for free while you are there. This service promotes a way to avoid accidental drowning risks for kids. Check with other lake and park offices to see if they have jackets.
