Old Hickory, TN 37138 JUNE 21, 2020 TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SCRIPTURE REFLECTION There are many things of which we can be afraid: being rebuked, rejection, anger, being challenged, having to defend ourselves, standing alone, insecurity, failure, and even death. For some, identifying and overcoming their fears is a daunting task. Regardless of how much they may want to break the cycle of fear, they find that they remain close friends with old and dysfunctional behavioral habits and norms. Maybe what they really fear is change. There are many who gravitate to the familiar and comfortable, and find safety and securi- ty in doing so, even if they remain mired in mediocrity. Human beings have to learn that there is life beyond the what has always beenand that happiness and depth are possible when old structures and systems have to be left behind. Can you leave the near and dear, the comfortable and familiar, the safe and secure, and discover new opportunities? The shear thought of doing so can bring on feelings of apprehension, intense anger, resentment, defensiveness, reluctance, resistance, and even apathy. If we have to be responsible for making the change, cowardice can creep in. If someone else is to blame for making the change, any number of possible negative reactions are possible. In the end, only one thing is required and that is God. If I can rely on and deepen my relation- ship with God, especially in the Eucharist along with a community of believers, then little else is of great concern. We have to figure out what is really im- portant. It is not always what we think. The Gospel calls us to stretch ourselves and try new things, not to remain stuck and stagnant in familiar ways. We are asked to live life more de- liberately, radically, and intentionally. We are asked to leave the familiar behind and learn to live with changing, and often limiting, human structures. We can- not get too caught up in the physical, ideological, or structural systems we are used to. The Holy Spirit always leads and guides us. If we trust this, we will find ourselves doing things we never thought we could do. Always seek the path to joy and love. They keep us from falling victim to our fears and from seeking the nostalgic crutches we think we need to achieve a sense of well- being and happiness. Liturgical Publications, Inc.

JUNE 21, 2020 TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SCRIPTURE REFLECTION

There are many things of which we can be afraid: being rebuked, rejection, anger, being challenged, having to defend ourselves, standing alone, insecurity, failure, and even death. For some, identifying and overcoming their fears is a daunting task. Regardless of how much they may want to break the cycle of fear, they find that they remain close friends with old and dysfunctional behavioral habits and norms. Maybe what they really fear is change. There are many who gravitate to the familiar and comfortable, and find safety and securi-ty in doing so, even if they remain mired in mediocrity. Human beings have to learn that there is life beyond the “what has always been” and that happiness and depth are possible when old structures and systems have to be left behind. If I can rely on and deepen my relation-ship with God, especially in the Eucharist along with a community of believers, then little else is of great concern. We have to figure out what is really im-portant. It is not always what we think. The Gospel calls us to stretch ourselves and try new things, not to remain stuck and stagnant in familiar ways. capturing accurate information.

• St. Stephen PREP recycles disposable, consumer-size batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, 9 volt, computer and printer sizes). Recycling helps keep nickel, cadmium, lead, lithium and other heavy metals and pollutants out of area landfills and our drinking water. “Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.” (Matthew 10:32) Would

others know that you are Catholic by the way you act and speak? Do you share your Catholic faith with others? Do you defend your Catholic faith when the situation arises or do you remain silent? Do you pray in public before meals? Pray for the strength and courage to be a joyful witness of our Catholic faith when the opportunity presents itself. Let us become the radiant light and bold witness that we are called to be!

Blessing of Fathers

God and Father of all creation, we come before you today with humble hearts. You are our model of a loving father. When we fail and fall short of your expectations, you are always there at the end of the day with open arms, ready to heal the cuts and scrapes of the day and to encourage us to try again and not to give up. We hold up these men in our midst who act in the world as fathers to their children or models of fathers for others. Bless them in their moments of doubt and frustration with their children. Give them warm and open hearts to forgive failures. Provide them with the words needed for encouragement and perseverance. We ask all this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

From the Pro-Life Committee of the Ladies Auxiliary: Prayer is the only entryway into genuine self-knowledge. It is also the main way we experience deep change—the reordering of our lives. Prayer is how God gives us so many of the unimaginable things He has for us. Indeed, prayer makes it safe for God to give us many of the things we most desire. It is the way we know God, the way we finally treat God as God. Prayer is simply the key to everything we need to do and be in life.

SUNDAY'S READINGS FOR JUNE 21 (The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time) First Reading: “Sing to the Lord, praise the Lord, For he has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the wicked!” (Jer 20:13) Psalm: Lord, in your great love, answer me. (Ps 69) Second Reading: But the gift is not like

Prayer Cards for Students: If you have been praying for a student this school year, thank you so much! It is now time to send our notes to church for distribution to the students. The origi-nal envelope you were given is addressed for the purpose of sending your note. You may simply put your note in the envelope, put a stamp on it and drop it in the mail. Your attention to this last step of writing a short note of support and encour-agement is especially appreciated during this most unusual end of the school year.

Prison Ministry Rosary: Due to the Corona-virus, we are asking you to pray the Wednesday 6pm Rosary for the incarcerated from home.

Rice Bowls: If you have been contributing to Catholic Relief Services by using the Rice Bowls, please bring them as Sunday Masses resume.

Please keep your eye out for an appeal letter in the mail if you have supported the Bishop's Appeal in the past. As of June 8, St. Stephen Catho-lic Community has reached 60% of our dollar goal and 84% of our participation goal. Altar Flower Donation for

June 20-21:

In Honor of all Fathers

To donate flowers for the altar in memory of a loved one or to remember a special occasion,

contact Connie Blevins (615-397-9255).

Public celebration of Mass at limited capacity started on May 18. In a letter dated Apr. 24, Bishop Spalding extended the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days through June 30. Go to the diocese website (www.dioceseofnashville.com) to view the letter from the Bishop. Watch St. Stephen’s website and Facebook for more up-to-date information as it becomes available. From Fr. Pat: “On Sunday you can join with us on Facebook for Mass starting at 8:30am. Once it’s up, it’s up, so join us at your convenience. I’d encourage you not to do so in isolation but to watch at a time when everyone in your household can pray together, sing together and make your responses during the Mass together.” Anyone over the age of 65 or anyone who is worried that attending Mass would add undue stress or jeopardize their health or the health of a person with whom they live are encouraged to remain at home and live stream the Mass at their convenience. We have an additional Mass each weekday if you’d like to attend during the week (Fr Pat says “Think of it as every day is Sunday.”): Mon-day at 8am and 12pm; Tuesday at 8am and 6:30pm; Wednesday at 8am and 12pm; Thursday at 8am and 6:30pm; and Friday at 8am and 12pm. Please wear a face mask and follow the instructions of the ushers for seating when you attend Mass. ALL non-liturgical events, including small faith meetings, have been cancelled at St. Stephen until groups of more than 10 can meet. Visit the Church’s Facebook page and website (www.saintstephencommunity.org) for the latest parish news, photos and lots of other great resources.
