A busy few months…….. There has been a lot going on at Saint Barnabas, as there usually is. In the last few months we have had several parish celebrations, beginning with the my installation as Pastor, Cardinal Timothy Dolan coming to celebrate Mass for our Saint Patrick’s Day parade, our volunteers party, celebrating Deacon Laurato’s 40 th Anniversary to the Diaco nate, last Sunday celebrating Deacon Eymard’s ordination to the Diaconate and this weekend the Handicapped Mass. At all these events we had a reception and every reception was taken care of by our wonderful and dedicated Ladies of Charity led by Mary Dee Mahon. The ladies worked tirelessly to transform the High School cafeteria, ordering the food and all that goes with it, organizing, decorating and serving us all. We give them a big and grateful thank you for all their hard work. The Sign of the Cross & Penitential Rite The priest then goes either to the presider’s chair or remains at the altar after veneration and begins the celebration of the Mass with the

Sign of the Cross. This openly meaningful gesture is both a symbol of our faith and a form of vocal prayer. The action is seen as a synthesis of our faith. (The Mass pg. 96) This gesture traces the way God loved the human race, descending from heaven to heart (Head to heart) then ascending to heaven (heart to left side) taking our glorified nature to heaven (ending on the right shoulder – where Jesus sits at the right hand side of the Father). The symbol of the Cross itself allows us to acknowledge that our redemption comes from the Cross itself – this instrument of torture became the symbol of our redemption at Calvary through the Paschal Mystery and the cross is also where the sacrifice is made present as the Paschal Mystery is represented every time we celebrate the Mass. The Sign of the Cross tells us how much God loves us and that there is a love in this world that is stronger than death and stronger than our own sins and weaknesses, and that love is formed in the shape of the Cross. (Pope Benedict XVI, the Spirit of the Liturgy, 145).

The priest then continues with the Greeting - a statement that declares the Presence of the Lord to the congregation. Through the greeting and the congregation’s response the mystery of the Church gathered together is made manifest. There are currently three (3) greeting options that can be used: (Roman Missal – 3rd Edition, 513-514)

(1) The Lord be with you (2) The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all (3) Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

To any of these the people would respond – and with your spirit. The priest then briefly introduces the celebration of the Mass and calls each of us to ‘recall our faults and failures with the following formula: “Brethren, that we may more worthily celebrate the sacred mysteries, let us call to mind our sins.” The Penitential Rite follows and this rite gives all present a chance to recognize our failings and ask God to cleanse us of all that may hold us back from the celebration of the Mass. Our faith teaches us that this act will remove the stain of any venial sins. However if we have committed any mortal sin from our last reception of Holy Communion until now – we should avail ourselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation before receiving Our Lord. There are three (3) options available for the Penitential Rite:

(1) The Confiteor (I Confess to Almighty God) (2) A shorter form of the Rite (Two verses & responses) (3) The Lord have Mercy (with proper tropes or prompts according to season)
