In the Gospel today, Jesus calms the sea and then asks the disciples “Why are you lacking in faith?” In our life’s journey, we also must learn to believe in God’s presence and to trust in his care. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent DePaul was able to continue to show God’s love and care to others by assisting families: providing food, gifts, utility and rent bills. . — Mary Clare O’Brien, 503-309-7639

You Raise Me UpThis weekend we celebrate Father’s

Day. And so it is fitting that we celebrate both our own fathers and the earthly fa-ther of Jesus—St. Joseph.

St. Joseph (although often overshad-owed by Mary) is so important to the Church that Pope Francis has proclaimed 2020-21 an entire Year of St. Joseph. He marked the occa-sion with his Apostolic Letter Patris Corde (with a Father’s Heart), in which he recalls the 150th anniversary of the dec-laration of St. Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. Pope Francis describes St. Joseph in this way:

A beloved, tender and obedient father— Quoting his predecessor St. Paul VI, “St. Joseph expressed his fatherhood by mak-ing an offering of himself in love placed at the service of the Messiah…” He goes on to say, “in Him, Jesus saw the tender love of God.” And in the words of Pope John Paul II, “Joseph is also a father in obedience to God….and is truly a min-ister of salvation.”

Welcoming the will of God—St. Joseph is an accepting father; accepting Mary unconditionally, and accepting in life even those events he does not clearly understand. Pope Francis continues, “Joseph did not look for shortcuts but confronted reality with open eyes and ac-cepted personal responsibility for it. For this reason, he encourages us to accept and welcome others as they are, without exception…”

A creatively courageous father, ex-ample of love—In Patris Corde, Pope Francis highlights the “creative courage” of St. Joseph—turning problems into pos-sibilities by trusting in divine providence. He is considered “the special patron of all those forced to leave their native lands because of war, hatred, persecution and poverty,” and as such Joseph cannot “be other than the guardian of the Church...and the Body of Christ.”

A father who teaches the value, dig-nity and joy of work—The Pope writes, “there is a renewed need to appreciate the importance of dignified work, of which Saint Joseph is an exemplary patron.” He further explains, “Work is a means of participating in the work of salvation,

an opportunity to hasten the coming of the Kingdom, to develop our talents and abili-ties, and to put them at the service of society and fraternal communion.”

A father “in the shadows,” centered on Mary and Jesus—

Pope Francis aptly states, “Fathers are not born, but made…a man does not become a father simply by bringing a child into the world, but by taking up the responsibility to care for that child.” Further, Pope Francis describes Joseph’s fatherhood of Jesus as “the earthly shad-ow of the heavenly Father”—explaining that being a father has nothing to do with possession, but is rather a sign pointing to a greater fatherhood—that of the “heavenly Father.”

Referencing the blueprint of St. Joseph gives us pause to honor our own fathers on this day. Of the many things I learned from my dad, at the forefront was a core belief in the value, dignity and joy of work. He taught me to follow my passion, and believed that I could be whatever I wanted to be. For that, I will be forever grateful.

Finally, this weekend we highlight all our fathers in pictures and accompa-nied by the song, “You Raise Me Up.” Originally composed by the Norwegian-Irish duo Secret Garden, it was made famous by the pop singer, Josh Groban and also enjoys crossover appeal in the sacred world. And so, following the ex-ample of St. Joseph and as a tribute to our own fathers—Happy Father’s Day! You raise me up to more than I can be.

—Maria Manzo

Music Notes

Join our new Chime ChoirDo you love music? Consider joining our

new “Chime Choir” at The Madeleine. Hand chimes are…

▸ Accessible to play. Chimes are set up like a musical keyboard. A basic knowledge in musical rhythm or note reading is help-ful, but not required.

▸ A safe alternative to singing during COVID. “Chimers” are assigned one or two individual chimes, which are not

shared with one another. Because of this, it is easy to be socially distanced. Masks are mandatory.

▸ A great family music ministry —which will bring much joy and beauty to our liturgies! For more information on rehearsals and

liturgies, please contact Maria Manzo, Director of Music at [email protected]

Parish Stewardship Campaign still underway

Our Parish Stewardship Letters for the 2021-22 fiscal year were mailed several weeks ago. If you have not yet received your letter, you can contact the Parish Office.

Since we did not run a Stewardship Campaign last year due to the pandem-ic, we thought a review of what you might expect would be a good idea.

The feature most folks are drawn to

is the graph in the middle of the page that shows your past 5-years’ giving in comparison to parish averages.

This letter, and the graph, show giving for our Parish Offertory, Second Collections and our Capital Repair Fund (used for mainte-nance and repairs on campus). This graph does NOT include Old Church Capital Campaign gifts.

Once you have received your let-ter, if you have questions about the Stewardship Campaign, your past do-nations, or your upcoming donation, contact James Wurzer at the Parish Office, 503-281-5777 or [email protected], or Father Mike at [email protected]

By The Numbers

1 Giving History. We heard from some people that they didn’t always remember how much they had been giving—

so when it came time to pledge for the new year, they would have to dig through bank records. These green bars show how much you’ve given each year, averaged by month for simplicity—in Parish Offertory, Second Collections and Capital Repair gifts—for each of the past 5 years. These bars do NOT include Old Church Capital Campaign giving or pledges.

2 Parishioner Average Giving. We also thought it would be helpful to know, for context, the average monthly con-

tribution per contributing parish family over each of the past 5 years.

3 Contact information. We have included what we hope is your current contact information. See an error or a phone

or email missing? Just make the correction when you send in your commitment card!

4 Suggested 2021-22 monthly amount. This is an amount for you to consider for your 2021-22 giving. It reflects the

greater of your prior year monthly average plus our requested 6% increase, or the parish average. It’s just a suggestion...we are grateful for any amount.

5 Your Commitment. Here, we list the commitments for the coming year. ▸ Combined Monthly Commitment. The amount here is intended to cover not only your Parish Offertory, the main fund that our parish runs on, but Second Collections and Capital Repair Fund also. This does NOT include any gifts to our Old Church Project Capital Campaign. ▸Additional Gifts: If you did not include Capital Repair Fund and Second Collections in the past, please consider including a monthly amount here. ▸ Total Per Month: If you included Additional Amounts, please total all the lines above for your total monthly commitment.

6 Method of payment: We are really hoping people will experience the convenience of automatic electronic

payments this year. Complete instructions are on the back of your commitment card.

Thank you for your support of The Madeleine! Every family, every person in the parish benefits from your generosity. Your ongoing support is critical to the ministries and mission of The Madeleine.

As you know, the pandemic has been difficult to navigate. Most of our support-ers have been steadfast, but not everyone has been able to support the parish at their previous levels. And, due to the physical, emotional and economic hardships imposed by the pandemic, we did not pursue a Parish Stewardship Campaign last year. Which leads me to ask for your help this year.

With increased costs for 2021—including a planned cost-of-living pay increase for your parish staff who received none last year—I am asking all parishioners to consider a 6% or greater increase over their prior giving amounts. Or, if possible, to increase giving up to our parish average amount, as noted on the Stewardship Commitment Form below. I know I can count on your generosity, and I remain very grateful for your support of our journey.

If you have any questions, please contact me or James Wurzer, our Business Manager, at the Parish Office, 503-281-5777.

PARISH STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN 2021-22

Peggy BarnettA Funeral Mass was celebrated for longtime parishioner Peggy

Barnett on Friday, June 17, at The Madeleine.Margaret Mary (Peggy) (DeJardin) Barnett was born June 17,

1941, to Stan and Marie DeJardin. She died June 9, 2021. Peggy was born in Portland, Oregon.

Peggy attended Sacred Heart Grade School in Gervais for grades 1 through 5. In 1951 the family moved to Salem where Peggy attended St Joseph’s Elementary and Sacred Heart High School. Following high school Peggy attended the Merritt Davis School of Commerce earning her certification in business services.

On September 14, 1963 she married Jerry Barnett. They had two children, Brian and Brent.

Peggy loved The Madeleine Parish where she spent 35 years serving as a Eucharistic Minister at the Saturday evening Mass

at The Madeleine. She loved her home and neighbors where she lived for the past 49 years. It is the community in the neighborhood and The Madeleine Parish which enabled her to live a blessed life with many great friends.

She is survived by her sister Sherriann Fisher, nephew Chris Fisher and niece Lisa Reed. She is also sur-vived by her two sons Brian Barnett, his wife Karissa Schwartz and Brent Barnett and his girlfriend Laura Edwards.

Please pray for Peggy, her family and all the faithfully departed from The Madeleine
