After 48 years, Grace Kuewa received closure Monday. Her brother, Navy Airman Albert Kalahana Kuewa, a Waialua High School graduate, was one of 10 to have their names inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., two weeks ago, bringing the total to 58,282.
"His death left an emotional scar," Kuewa said Monday at the Governor's Memorial Day Ceremony, "but I can rest easier now that he has received such an honor."
Hundreds showed up for Monday's program at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe, which included opening remarks from Maj. Gen. Darryll Wong, state adjutant general; a parade of flags and presentation of floral lei; a rifle salute by the Hawaii Air National Guard; a flyover by a Coast Guard Dolphin helicopter; and music from the 111th Army Band.
On Sept. 18, 1964, Airman Kuewa, 22, was aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger in the Gulf of Tonkin, off the shore of Vietnam, when he was hit and killed by a moving plane, an incident that should have made him a casualty of war.
However, Grace Kuewa, 65, said the military logged her brother's death differently, stating that he walked into a plane's propeller, which is why he never received the honor he should have.
Until now.
Airman Kuewa's high school classmate and war buddy Benjamin Ishida, 68, found out about the discrepancies in military records as to how his friend died when he returned home from war.
For the past 46 years, Ishida, who lives in Wahiawa, has worked with the Kuewa family to get Kuewa's death classified as a casualty of war and his name on the war memorial in Washington. More recently
he got help from U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka and Clay Park, director of veterans programs at Papa Ola Lokahi, a nonprofit agency that focuses on Hawaiian health issues.
On Monday, Ishida represented the Kuewa family in Washington at a ceremony for the new additions to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.
"It has been a great journey for Ben," Grace said. "Myself, along with the rest of my family, are so thankful for what he has gone through to get my brother's name on that wall."
In his keynote address, Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz said President Barack Obama has asked federal, state and local officials to honor Vietnam veterans with "appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities" this year, the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the war.
Schatz acknowledged Akaka, who was present, and Ishida for their efforts to get Kuewa's name on the wall.
And he recognized Grace Kuewa and the rest of her family in attendance for the sacrifices that her brother, whom he called a "noteworthy hero," made during the war.
He said efforts are under way to have Kuewa's name engraved on the Hawaii Korean and Vietnam War Memorial on the grounds of the state Capitol.
"It is the ultimate honor to finally have his name on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in D.C.," said Grace Kuewa. "Hopefully, one day I'll make it out there to see it."

They say old Soldiers never die. In the case of Corporal Benjamin Kopp, this is turning out to be true in many ways.
Ben was shot and killed during combat operations in Afghanistan. He was an organ donor, and his sacrifices continued. His heart was given to a family friend named Judy Meikle, who was 57 years old. The transplant was successful. Ben’s mom is Jill Stephenson. Jill is a strong woman and herself an inspiration. Yesterday, Jill Stephenson published:
"I want to wish a special Happy Birthday to Judy Meikle today. In case you don't know, Judy is the recipient of my wonderful son Ben Kopp's big strong Ranger heart. Judy received Ben's heart almost three years ago and today celebrates turning 60!! I am blessed to know her and call her a friend. She is breathing proof of what the gift of life means when we think not just of ourselves when we die. Ben lives on her beating heart. Happy, happy day to you, Ms. Judy. Love you~"
And so Ben’s heart beats on, inspiring more people with every passing day.
And his name lives on in the Kopp-Etchells Effect.
But even more than in his heart and name, Ben’s spirit lives on through a powerful example of courage,
sacrifice, and generosity. There is more to the Kopp-Etchells Effect than just helicopters in the night. The Effect, the Heart of a Ranger, has become a symbol of courage and spirit to be revered.

Thank you for your interest in attending the Hawaii Adventure Camp (HAC) for Military Youth at Camp Erdman! Camp Erdman is located on the beautiful North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. We look forward to spending four days in Summer 2012 with your youth. Please use the handy checklist below to ensure you have completed all of the required application. Application Checklist This checklist is for your use to ensure all required forms are completed and returned correctly. For those in Hawaii, completed forms must be postmarked/sent in at least two weeks before the first day of camp. For those coming from outside of Hawaii, completed forms must be postmarked/sent in at least four weeks before your youth’s first day of camp (by May 28th or June 11th). This is to allow for time to make the plane reservation. Packets that are mailed to us without all of the forms completed entirely will impact your child’s ability to attend camp. All youth will be housed in the cabins equipped with bunk beds and an indoor toilet/shower. The youth will be separated by age and gender and supervised by their respective camp counselors who will also be sleeping in the cabins. 1. Arrive on time to all camp activities.
2. Remain with the group or a counselor at all times.
3. Know, understand, and obey rules throughout the camp activities and during free time.
4. Follow safety rules regarding activities and at the camp.
5. Remain drug and alcohol free.
6. Respect all camp equipment.
7. Attend and participate in all scheduled activities.
8. Respect all people and wildlife/sealife I come in contact with when in group and out of group.

10. Not engage in any inappropriate or disrespectful behavior.

After months of doubt, the 2013 Pro Bowl will be played in Honolulu, the NFL announced today.
It will be held Jan. 27 and shown on NBC.
“The players have made it clear through the NFL Players Association that they would like the opportunity to continue to play the Pro Bowl in Hawaii,” NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Ray Anderson said in a release.
"We will support the players on this initiative to improve the Pro Bowl. We have had many discussions with the players in recent years about the Pro Bowl and they recognize that the quality of the game has not been up to NFL standards. We look forward to working with the players toward the goal of improving the competitiveness of this season’s game.”
The game has been held at Aloha Stadium every year except 2010 since 1980.

summer; and presents photo exhibition focused on those who have served
HONOLULU, HAWAII (May 24, 2012)—The Honolulu Museum of Art announced that for the third year it is participating in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and the Department of Defense. As part of the program, the museum is one of six Hawai‘i institutions to offer free admission to all active-duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Across the country, more than 1,500 museums are participating in Blue Star Museums, with leadership support provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. The other participating Hawai‘i museums are: the Hawai‘i State Art Museum and Iolani Palace in Honolulu; the Lyman Museum and Mission House in Hilo, Hawai‘i Island; the Laupahoehoe Train Museum in Laupahoehoe, Hawai‘i Island; and the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum in Puunene, Maui. “The Honolulu Museum of Art is honored to again be part of this program that connects the military with museums,” says Stephan Jost, director of the Honolulu Museum of Art. “We gratefully open our arms to service men and women and their families. Relaxing in front of priceless works of art in one of the most beautiful settings in Honolulu for free is the least we can do for a group of people who are feeling the stress of our country’s current conflicts.” To deepen its relationship with the military community, the museum will present this fall Courage and Strength: Portraits of Those Who Have Served.
