Dear Sacred Heart Community Parish, I want to start this short introduction of myself with this verse of the Psalm 123:6 “God has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy” that I have related to myself every day and indeed God has granted me the opportunity to be assigned as a transitional deacon in this parish for a year as I get ready for priestly ordination. My name is John Becerra and I am originally from Colombia. I am the oldest of three siblings and the one who left home to go on this divine adventure of giving up my life for Christ to serve others in his name as a future priest. I was born 32 years ago into a Catholic family who provided for me my faith and my love for God and also the support to follow God’s call when God called to join the Seminary in Cartago, Colombia where I did my philosophy courses (3 years of formation) and after that period of time God kept asking me to leave my family and my land to follow him in another mission. This mission was to come to the US to help and to learn how to be a good priest in foreign lands. These foreign lands became my new home and I

glad that I heard his voice and now I am in your midst sharing the graces of God. I came to the United States in 2010 to continue my seminary formation at Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon. I finished my seminary formation last May (4 years of Formation) and as time passes I was ordain deacon last year in Saint Mary cathedral in Portland Oregon. Now my bishop Richard Garcia has assigned me to this lovely community to serve you and learn from you how to be a priest according to God’s heart. I am glad to be here with you my new dearcommunity and I hope to see you during Masses and after them. Feel free to come to see me if you want to know me better. Let us keep each other in prayers and remember we are here to know Jesus as much as possible.

Yours in Christ, Deacon John

Diacono John Becerra

A note from the Pastor - During September I’m inviting all ministries to send representatives to meet with me and share the work that you do and to let me know what ways I can best serve you. I’ve sent out an invitation to the ministry heads heads, but if you’ve been missed

(so sorry!), please call the office and set up a meeting time for us to get together. I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you more! God bless.

Many thanks to everyone who came and shared about their volunteer work in Detention Ministry. Some have been helping for 30 years, some for 12 and more. It was very inspiring. If you could not attend the meeting but are still

interested, contact Deacon David for more information.

A NOTE FROM ADAM WOODWARD, seminarian who spent a summer with us several years ago - My father’s parents grew up on farms in the Midwest and both left home at a young age to join the navy. They met after my grandfather survived the Pearl Harbor bombing and they were soon married. He later sustained injuries when a mine struck his ship and the navy discharged him along with his wife as his nursing aide. They raised two children and eventually moved to the East Coast. My mother’s father also served in the navy and afterwards met his wife at a hospital on the East Coast where they both worked as nurses. My father played football in high school and was later drafted by the army and sent to Vietnam where he gave his life to Christ. After returning to the United States, my father met my mother, a preschool teacher, at their church and they were married, raising three children. My parents decided to seek employment at local private schools so that their children could freely receive an education that we could not have otherwise afforded. My older brother, younger sister and I were raised out in the country without any television or internet so we enjoyed a lot of reading, music and sports. I am blessed with a wonderful family and we remain close though geographically separate. My background is in teaching and social work which brought me out to the West Coast, working for a new mental health organization in the Diocese of Monterey. I have been blessed by many wonderful mentors, teachers, online ministries, authors, mystics, small groups, and various prayer styles through the years which God has used to bring me closer to Him as I follow this path toward priesthood and military chaplaincy. Last Christmas 2015 marked the halfway point of my seven year seminary formation process and I am currently serving at Old Mission San Luis Obispo for my pastoral year internship, serving in several ministries including a hospital, prison, and fostering the development of spiritual small groups. Thank you for your support.
