Prior to performing the dissection, the students were asked to fill outassignment sheets on how the muscle and skeletal systems work.Shown are Spence Linke, Jayston Arnold and Celia Starchief.

Aurora Breland and Lucas Duty useteamwork to get the job done.

    School students use unique

learning methods to studymuscle and skeletal systemsByKEN GRABOWSKI

MANISTEE No onecould have blamed KennedyElementary School teacherMichelle LaPrad if she quippedto her students to just wing iton their science assignment.

LaPrad had her fifth gradestudents studying the muscle

and skeletal system through thetraditional methods, but shewanted to give something visualto really drive home the pointon how they work in the human

ody. That was when she justdecided to wing it.

What we are doing is dis-secting the chicken wing toenhance what we will be study-ng about the muscle system

and the skeletal system, saidLaPrad. Anatomically, theyare very similar to our armso the kids will be able to seethe biceps and triceps that are

shared both in the chickenwings and in our bodies.

Students had the opportu-nity to actually hold the wingand move it after the dissection,so they could see those thingstaking place right before theireyes.

They have the chance to seethe tendons and find the liga-ment that holds the two bonestogether in the upper and lowerarm and likewise in the upperand lower wing, said LaPrad.Right now a lot of our sciencefocus has been on the body sys-

tem and this is fitting in well. Its a nice way for them to actual-y see them instead of just tryingto feel them in their bodies andto actually see how they work, such as what a muscle looks likewhen it contracts and elongates

ack again.Prior to doing the dissec-

tion, the students studied thedifferent parts of those systems.

    By KEN MCINTOSH

    STAFF WRITER

ICCA will be placing ads in newspapers, radio and running television spots this weekasking people to bring in any old silver andgold coins made beore 1970. Those that dobring in their coins will be able to speak withcollectors one on one and have their coinslooked at by a specialist. With the help othese ICCA members, oers will be made tothose that have coins made beore 1970.Oers will be made based on silver or goldcontent and the rarity o the coins. All coins

made beore 1970 will be examined andpurchased including gold coins, silver coins, silver dollars, all types o nickels and pennies. Those that decide to sell their coins will bepaid on the spot.

I you are like a lot o people, you mighthave a ew old coins or even a coee can ulllying around. I you have ever wondered whatthey are worth, now might be your chanceto fnd out and even sell them i you choose. They could be worth a lot according to theInternational Coin Collectors Association,

also known as ICCA. Collectors will pay aortune or some coins and currency or theircollections. I they are rare enough, one coincould be worth over $100,000 according toEric Helms coin collector and ICCA member. One ultra rare dime, an 1894S Barber, soldor a record $1.9 million to a collector in Julyo 2007. While that is an extreme example, many rare and valuable coins are stashedaway in dresser drawers or lock boxes aroundthe country. The ICCA and its collector membershave organized a traveling event in search oall types o coins and currency. Even common

coins can be worth a signifcant amount dueto the high price o silver and gold, saysHelms. Washington quarters and Rooseveltdimes and worth many times their ace value.Recent silver markets have driven the price upon even common coins made o silver. Helmsexplains, All hal dollars, quarter and dimesmade beore 1970 contain 90% silver and aresought ater any time silver prices rise. Rightnow its a sellers market.

The rarest coins these collectors are lookingor include $20, $10, $5 and $2 1/2 goldcoins and any coin made beore 1850. Thesecoins always bring big premiums according tothe ICCA. Silver dollars are also very soughtater nowadays.

Other types o items the ICCA will bepurchasing during this event include U.S.currency, gold bullion, investment gold, silverbars, silver rounds, proo sets, etc. Even

oreign coins are sought ater and will bepurchased.

Also, at this event anyone can sell theirgold jewelry, dental gold or anything madeo gold on the spot. Bring anything you thinkmight be gold and the collectors will examine, test and price it or ree. I you decide to sellyou will be paid on the spot it has been anunknown act that coin dealers have alwayspaid more or jewelry and scrap gold thanother jewelers and pawn brokers.

So, whether you have one coin you think

might be valuable or a large collection yourecently inherited, you can talk to thesecollectors or ree and i your lucky you mayhave a rarity worth thousands. Either way, there is nothing to lose and it sounds like un!

to show how the ligaments, flanges and metacarpals ontheir hands work.

They cant just get itfrom reading a piece ofpaper, said LaPrad. Weread several different piecesof information and looked atthings online. This is another

way to get all the learningtypes in and not just yourauditory learners and booklearners.

Since the students areonly in the fifth grade, theyhavent had much of anopportunity to do dissections.LaPrad made sure to haveplenty of parent volunteers inthe classroom to assist as thestudents used scissors andskewers to handle the task.

This is the first time weare doing this particular typeof dissection, and for a lot ofthese kids the first time they

    have dissected anything,

said LaPrad. That is why Iwanted to do something thatwouldnt intimidate them. They have probably all eatenchicken wings and haveexperienced cooking them

with their parents, so it was

a good way to get them into

    doing it.However, the more

important thing is the stu-dents winged away with a

better understanding of themuscle and skeletal system. It was hands-on learning in

    its best form.

    LESSON:From Page 1

Kennedy Elementary teacher Michelle LaPrad dem-onstrates to the students how the muscle systemworks.
