Harper & Row Announces
The Third Edition of Zenia Sacks Da Silva's
BEGINNING SPANISH
A Concept Approach A classic in the field, this dynamic, multifaceted program is designed to enable be ginning students to understand, speak, and write Spanish with great facility. The concept approach on which the text is based focuses on the ideas that language serves to express; employs association of related structures and words to build vocab
ulary; emphasizes active conversation throughout; uses materials which inspire cre
ativity in both the student and instructor.
BEGINNING SPANISH distinguishes itself from other texts in its personalization of all material, its numerous motivational devices, its use of the scientifically recognized method of association of ideas to allow the student to develop his own contexts for retention and recognition. Its flexible structure allows the teacher to expand or com
press each lesson according to class or individual needs. Above all, it offers contem
porary, humorous stories and dialogues that stimulate conversation, but that never
go beyond the student's ken.
The Third Edition, shortened to better suit one-year courses, features a new two semester format; an expanded opening Lecci?n de Conversaci?n', 24 lessons in which
revamped structural presentations, models, and exercises place even greater stress on oral communication; new stories and new discussion materials; 12 practical and
original "Horas de Conversaci?n"; 12 cultural essays (six depict history through art; six deal with contemporary problems of Spain and Latin America); hundreds of illustrations, many in full color.
438 pages. $9.95. January, 1973
To accompany the text:
Instructor's Manual
32 New Tapes: $199.00. (Note: Any school that purchased tapes for the earlier editions of BEGINNING SPANISH may trade in the original set before September 28, 1973 for the Third Edition tapes at a discount of $100 from the regular price of $199.00.) May, 1973.
Tape Manual and Workbook: $3.50 (tentative).

UNAMUNO NOVELIST A EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE
By R. E. BATCHELOR
Unamuno is studied here in a comparative manner. He is presented as a man
of his time, uttering the anguish of the twentieth century, born into the climate of
Kierkegaard and Ibsen, and anticipating the figures of Kafka an Sartre. Since modern trends in philosophy seem to lend themselves most aptly to the novel, it is particularly in the context of the novel that Unamuno's originality as a thinker is assessed. There is full bibliography and Index.
