What’s On 26
This April we have been busy preparing a jam-packed Mint Issue featuring some special commemorative coins. We have released the first coin in the highly anticipated Earth and Beyond series on page 4 and a coin commemorating one of Australia’s most decorated commanders of the First World War – Sir John Monash on page 10.
The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games have arrived and will take place from 4–15 April. Our Minties Catherine Montalto, James Knight and Jamie Sangster joined the fun of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay that trekked across Australia. We are proud to be an official supporter of the Games and to mark this special event the Mint brings you the latest coins in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games coin program on pages 12–15 .
We reflect upon the contributions of the Anzac’s who gave their lives in war and other operations around the world with the latest instalment in the Lest We Forget series on page 6. On page 8 we feature a new triangular coin – Land, Sea and Air which commemorates Australia’s Defence Force: Navy, Army and Air Force.
The Mint is proud to honour the memory of Australians and New Zealanders who have served. On 25 April show your support for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in war, but left a distinguished legacy of the Anzac legend.
Enjoy the issue.

MEET THE MINTIESS A L L Y D A V E Y
Sally Davey started a career at the Royal Australian Mint in September 2007. Working across the business, Sally has experienced all the Mint has to offer, having spent time working in the Mint Shop and Contact Centre before moving onto Product Development, Communications and now B2B Marketing.
Sally and the B2B team manage a number of B2B relationships with the Mint’s domestic and international clients, this includes sales and project management. The Business Development and Business to Business teams manage both Foreign Circulating Coin and Custom Minting. This includes select numismatic coins for private companies and international government departments as well as the production of medals and medallions.
Sally is a proud collector and her favourite coin is a 2012 $1 Silver SGP Proof Coin produced by the Mint for New Zealand Post in 2012. This coin commemorated the release of the Hobbit films and Sally is particularly fond of the program which released 40 coins over three years. Struck from pure silver, the coin features Bilbo Baggins surrounded by a ring of gold plating with the words ‘Middle-earth – New Zealand’ inscribed in English and Dwarvish.
As a proud Mintie Sally enjoys new challenges and has just wrapped up work on the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Official Medals. Sally can’t wait to see the medals being awarded to the athletes at the Games knowing that all the hard work the team has put in has resulted in a beautiful medal that will be cherished by the recipient.

In 1998 the Royal Australian Mint commemorated the 70th Anniversary of the Royal Flying Doctors Service 1928–1998. Since its beginnings in 1928 as the Aerial Medical Service, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) has provided world-class, life-saving medical attention to those who live in Australia’s remote, outlying regions. One of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations in the world it provides primary health care and 24 hour emergency service to people over an area of 7.69 million square kilometres.
This life-saving service began as a result of war. The reverend John Flynn and aviator Clifford Peel recognised a peaceful use for First World War aviation and wireless technology and in 1928, the Aerial Medical Service (AMS) was established, finally becoming the Royal Flying Doctors Service in 1955.
To celebrate 70 years the Royal Flying Doctor Service the Mint released two coins including a $5 proof in aluminium bronze and an uncirculated bimetallic coin. The $5 Proof coin features a Traeger’s pedal radio operator at her post, with an early RFDS aircraft in the background.
The uncirculated Bimetallic coin features the RFDS insignia and a bi-plane in aluminium bronze, with a stainless steel outer ring. The bimetallic coin was also specially packaged with an RFDS collector $2 Smart Phone card exclusively for this coin release. Recognised around the world as one of the most efficient and professional aerial medical services, these coins are a special addition to the Mint's collection.
