Without question, the Psalms are one of the most treasured books of Sacred Scripture. First published in 1963, the Grail Psalms were adopted worldwide for the Liturgy of the Hours and approved for general liturgical use following the Second Vatican Coun-cil. The unique character of the Grail Psalms is that they incorporate the rhythm of the original Hebrew text and are thus easily set to music, such as the psalmody of the late French Jesuit priest and composer Joseph Gelineau.

The Revised Grail Psalms, as the official English-language liturgical Psalter for the United States, will be the translation used in all future editions of liturgical books published for the United States, and for most other English-language countries as well. The Second Vatican Council encouraged the Mass to be sung according to the simple, beautiful, and timeless melodies of the Roman rite. They are contained in the Missale Romanum of Pope Paul VI. In the new Roman Missal in English (2010), we see the excellent adaption of these chants from the original Latin into the vernacular.

To coincide with the new English translation of the Missal, Solesmes has published a new book—Singing the Mass—containing all the chants of the Order of Mass in English and Latin on facing pages. Singing the Mass is for use by the people, and serves to encourage sung celebrations of the Vatican II Mass.

The Way of the Cross

Like the stations initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1991, the Biblical Way of the Cross offers a scriptural account of the condemnation and crucifixion of Jesus. This deeper and more accurate portrayal of Jesus’ final steps begins with Jesus praying in the Garden of Olives and journeys through his betrayal, condemnation, scourging, crucifixion, and burial. Haas also includes an optional fifteenth station commemorating Christ’s resurrection.

Since its original publication in 1971, A Community Mass has become a staple for many parishes. Due to its wide use and inclusion in various denominational hymnals, additional material and new instrumentations were periodically created by the composer. These “enrichments” have made A Community Mass adaptable to a variety of circumstances and forces—from cantor, assembly, and organ to performances by choir and assembly with small or large instrumental ensembles in addition to organ. Thus an “ordinary” setting is transformed into a “festive” setting in the appropriate liturgical context. The current edition contains Proulx’s own alterations for incorporating the 2010 Revised Order of Mass.

Nothing lends dignity and solemnity to the Passion Gospels more than observing the practice of three deacons or cantors proclaiming these stories according to the traditional chant.
