MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT

Nuclear Weapons Protest in America by FRANCES B. McCREA, Grand Valley State University, & GERALD E. MARKLE, Western Michigan University,

Minutes To Midnight is a timely examination of one of the preeminent moral, political, and economic dilemmas of our time. McCrea and Markle explore the dynamics of social movements behind antinuclear weapons campaigns in America-from the earliest post-war atomic scientists' movement to the "ban the bomb" efforts to the ill-fated Freeze movement of the 1980s. The authors note that the atomic scientiets' movement was the first attempt by scientists-as scientist-to protest the uses of their own creation. They locate contemporary problems in their historical context by exploring the ways in which traditional pacifist groups provided the infrastructure and directly presaged-in strategy, tactics, and organizational dilemmas-the Freeze movement. The authors use their information on antinuclearprotest activity as a way of understanding how social movements are founded, how they fare, and how social change occurs in postindustrial society.

This highly readable book will be of interest to a broad interdis- ciplinary audience of scholars, professionals, graduate students, and upper-division undergraduates in political science, peace stud- ies, American studies, sociology and the study of social move- ments, international relations, and history.

"The book clearly applies social theory to richly described cases of American protests against nuclear weapons; admirably, the cases are viewed as linked within a broad historical context."

Newv from| Sae VIOLENCE IN AMERICA, Volume 1

The History of Crime edited by TED ROBERT GURR,

US. Institute of Peace and University of Colorado Boulder This third edition of Violence in America: The History of Crime

presents a wealth of new research on the long-term dynamics of murder and other crimes of violence. With equal weight given to both personal violence and group violence, the contributors clearly identify and diagnose the painful circumstances of recurring epidemics of violent crime that have swept the American society over the past 150 years. Among the possible causes discussed are waves of immigration, the social dislocations of war, and growing concentrations of urban poverty. In addition, this engaging volume offers an evaluation of the traits of political assassins and an assessment of the pros and cons of gun control-and whether or not it will help in reducing crimes of violence.

VIOLENCE IN AMERICA, Volume 2 Protest, Rebellion, Reform edited by TED ROBERT GURR

US. Institute of Peace and University of Colorado Boulder Violence In America: Protest, Rebellion, Reform provides

fascinating insight into recently developed criminal violence theories on the sources of recurring conflict in American society. With their main focus on traumatic issues that have and continue to generate group violence, the contributors discuss the most intractable source of social and political conflict in our history-the resistance of Black Americans to their inferior status, and the efforts of White Americans to keep them there. Other intriguing topics include the belated emer- gence and decline of political terrorism and the continuation of violent threats from right-wing extremists, such as the Klan, the Order, and the Aryan nations.

FRAMEWORKS OF POWER

by STEWART R. CLEGG, University of New England, Armidale, Australia

What are the different frameworks for understanding power which have been developed within the social sciences? In particular, how has classical sociological literature as well as the literature of the last decade discussed the variety of approaches to power? In Frameworks of Power, Clegg provides a comprehensive account of the different ap- proaches to understanding power and, in the process, presents a fresh synthesis. This innovative overview opens with the classic literature on power as expressed by Machiavelli and Hobbes. Clegg then addresses more recent analyses. Included are the works of American political and social theorists, such as Robert Dahl, Peter Bacharach, Morton Baratz, and Talcott Parsons; the British sociologists, Steven Lukes, Anthony Giddens and Michael Mann; the German critical theorist, Jurgen Habermas, and the increasingly important contribu- tions of the French school, Michel Foucault, Bruno Latour and Michel Callon.

"This important book reopens the debate about power in modern society. The bookstartswhereStevenLukesandAnthonyGiddens left the controversy several years ago, but Clegg redirects the debate, by reconceptualizing power as an organizationalphenomenon. Organi- zation provides the framework of power,' and without knowledge of thisframework power cannot be adequately conceptualized. As such, this book invigorates both the debates on power and the entirefield of organizational studies."

Ne fro Sage!|| THREE FACES OF POWER

by KENNETH E. BOULDING, University of Colorado

Power. The word alone evokes images of great empires, of human misery, of personal triumphs and failures. Yet power has been-and continues to be-one of the most misunderstood concepts known to mankind. Now, in a fascinating new volume, Kenneth Boulding marshalls his remarkable intellectual talents to explore and analyze the nature of power.

Three Faces of Power offers the best of Kenneth Boulding: bold, innovative perspectives on past and present concepts. His creative analysis lays the groundwork for important future debates about power. Boulding explains that power can be divided into three major categories:

* Threat power, destructive in nature and applied particularly to political life.

* Economic power, resting largely on the power to produce and exchange items-and on the constantly changing distribution of property ownership.

* Integrative power, based on such relationships as legitimacy, respect, affection, love, community, and identity.

Turning general deterrence theory on its head, Boulding argues that the greatest error is to regard threat power as fundamental, for it is not effective unless it is reinforced by economic and integrative power. His conclusion has wide-ranging application to everything from the nuclear weapons debate to intimate personal relationships.

Three Faces of Power provides a refreshingly optimistic and chal- lenging call to a world future secured through the power of human interaction and knowledge. It will prove essential reading for students and academics in all areas of the social sciences, especially peace studies, political science, sociology, family studies, communication, organizational studies, social psychology, and international relations.
