DIVINITY SCHOOL OF HARVARD UNIVERSITY

SUMMER SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY

The tenth session of the School will open on Wednesday, July i, 1908, and continue till July i8. The subject will be

The Relation of Christianity to Other Religions.

Courses of lectures will be given on the origin and development of religion; on the Oriental religions which had the largest influence in the West; on Judaism at the beginning of the Christian era, from which Christianity sprang, and on the religions of the Greek and Roman world in which it spread and grew; on the attitude of the early Church toward other religions, and on the attitude which the modem Church should assume toward the religions of the peoples among whom it seeks to disseminate Christianity; and on the indebtedness of Christi- anity to other religions, and the bearing of this relation on the question of the absoluteness of Christianity.

The lectures will thus deal not only with phenomena of interest to the historical student but with important practical issues.

The following lecturers will take part in the School:

Professor C. H. Toy, Harvard University, Origin and Development of Religion.

Professor R. W. ROGERS, Drew Theological Seminary, Religion of Babylonia and Assyria.

ligions on Christianity.

New Books of Religious Interest

By Henry S. Nash, Professor of New Testament Interpretation in the Episcopal Theological School at Cambridge.

The Atoning Life To be published by Easter A profoundly appealing discussion of the inner principles on which the Christian religious life is based. By the author of " Ethics and Reve- lation," " Genesis of the Social Consciousness."

By President Henry Churchill King, of Oberlin College.

The Seeming Unreality of the Spiritual Life In press

By the author of" Reconstruction in Theology," " Theology and the Social Consciousness," " Rational Living," etc.

By Shailer Mathews, Professor of Historical and Comparative Theology, The University of Chicago.

The Gospel and the Modern Man In press This volume, in a way, supplements the author's recent work on The Church and the Changing Order. It is, however, more concerned with Christian thought than with social questions. It faces some of the fundamental questions raised by modern thought relative to Christianity, and urges the permanence of the real essentials of the gospel message from the point of view of evolution, biblical criticism, and psychology. Incidentally, it considers the attacks made by Nietzsche and Haeckel upon Christian faith. While it thus deals with fundamental matters of religion, it is written in a popular rather than a technical style.

By the Rev. George Holley Gilbert, D.D.

Interpretation of the Bible By the author of" The Student's Life of Jesus," " The Student's Life of Paul," etc. It is a comprehensive, fairly complete, though brief history of methods of interpretation from the earliest times to the present. Curiously enough, there has been no such record in English, even in outline, though the far-reaching influence of differences in interpreta- tion is well recognized.

Cloth, I2mo, $r.25 net; by mail, $1.35

By Professor Josiah Royce, of Harvard University, author of The Conception of God, etc.

The Philosophy of Loyalty In press This work, a course of lectures delivered before the Lowell Institute last autumn, contains a sketch of a philosophy of the moral life. In this sketch the author offers a somewhat new definition of the term loyalty, and then endeavors to centralize the whole duty of man about the higher type of loyalty which he thus defines.
