Understanding Conflict and War: Volume 1 THE DYNAMIC PSYCHOLOGICAL FIELD

by RUDOLPHJ. RUMMEL

Two of the most basic questions underlying contemporary political morality-whether war and violence are inevitable; and, if not, what can be done to eliminate them-are explored by Professor R. J. Rummel, resulting in a synthesis of extensive reading in the social sciences and twenty years of quantitative research into the empirical nature of war and violence.

Understanding Conflict and War: Volume 1 The Dynamic Psychological Field establishes the psychological and associated philosophical foundations for a consideration of a speculative-theoretical-empirical theory of war which may help to bring about the resolution of conflict. Four additional volumes (over the next five or six years) will complete the presentation of these theories, drawn from Professor Rummel's integration of social science theory into his quantitative data.

Rummel founds his empirical research in the substantive philosophical perspective of the nature of reality and of human perception, both of which are necessary to any understanding of war. He then goes on to explore man's behavioral framework, emphasizing motivation, and the need for aggression and the taking of power. The book uses field theory to review the work of sociologists and psychologists such as B. F. Brown, Karl Mannheim, Quincy Wright, Kurt Lewin, and the Gestalt school; it concludes with an integration of historical and contemporary definitions of materialism, idealism, and humanism as applied to conflict resolution.

Being published for the first time in its entirety, this body of work-based in part on the Dimensionality of Nations project, of which Rummel was director-makes an important, innovative, and controversial contribution to political science, conflict resolution, and international relations.
