Editorial Rules Contributions to the Canadian Journal of African Studies (CJAS) should be submitted in four copies with the length (including text, quotations, endnotes, and bibliography) ranging from 6 ooo to ioooo words (25 to 40 double-spaced typed pages). Authors should indicate their full name, their academic or professional status, and the address of the institution with which they are affiliated. Authors should also make sure to include all forwarding addresses and to notify the Editors if their addresses change. They should also write an abstract of less than 125 words for a translation into French.

The Chicago Manual of Style (I3th ed. 1982) published by University of Chicago Press is the copy editing reference book for CJAS. References must be indicated paren- thetically within the text, using the author-date system. In parentheses, references should include the author's surname, the date of publication of the source, and the page(s) if appiopriate. At the end of the article, there should be a bibliography, arranged alphabetically by author's name, where full information on all references may be obtained. When documentation or information is too extensive to be presented by the author-date format, numbered endnotes should be used. Such references should be numbered consecutively within the text and prepared in double-spaced format at the end of the text, before the bibliography. A style sheet is available from the editorial office and will be sent automatically to all authors whose articles are to be published. Authors must comply with style sheet guidelines and all reasonable decisions related to copy editing.

Graphs, maps, and diagrams should be prepared in a format ready for photo-repro- duction. Tables and other graphic material should follow the format used in various articles published in CJAS from Volume 20 (1986) onward. When initially submitting a paper, authors should send only photocopies and retain the original (on white paper in black ink and characters). If the article is accepted, the CJAS will request the originals of all tables, graphs, maps, and diagrams. Authors should always retain a copy for their own record. Manuscripts will not be returned.

A manuscript sent to CJAS must not be submitted to another publication at the same time. CJAS reserves the exclusive right to decide on publication for six months from the date of receipt. CJAS will not accept more than one article at a time for con- sideration for publication from the same author in any volume year and cannot pub- lish an author more than once a year other than in book reviews. CJAS does not pub- lish (I) translations of articles published elsewhere, either from English to French or from French to English, or (2) articles which are published in edited collections or as book chapters.

An author must assign full control of copyright to the publisher, the Canadian Association of African Studies (CAAS), before an article can be published in CJAS. CAAS and CJAS does not accept responsibility for statements of facts or opinion or for errors or omissions made by the author.
