Heavenly Father, You sent Your Son to save us and thus establish the Church as the Bride of Christ. Your Church is in need of servant leaders who will spend their lives in witness of their faith. We beg You for good and holy priests. In every age, You call men who follow Jesus to become servants and shepherds of Your people. You also call women to embrace a religious community and in doing so, to serve Your Church in love and charity. Send forth Your Holy Spirit and open their hearts to Your call and give these men and women the courage to give their lives completely to Jesus Christ. Be their rock of refuge and their light as they discern. Help us to support them on their journey, and to love them as His disci-ples. Give them the grace to guide the Church to follow Christ more closely. We ask you this in the name of Jesus Christ, the High Priest who intercedes for us before Your heavenly throne. Amen.

Loving God, as Your Son hung upon the cross, He entrusted His Disciples to the tender care of His mother and thus formed from His own suffering a family of faith for all those who believe in Him. Help us now to embrace one another as brothers and sisters and strengthen the family Christ has called us to be. In the midst of our sadness, may we find comfort in the Virgin Mother’s arms. May we walk together to encounter the risen Christ in our hearts and in one another. And may the Holy Spirit unite us as we give witness to You, our God and Father, through Christ our Lord. Amen

MERCY’S MEASURE “Sowing the Seed”
Very early in the Gospel of Mark, we learn what Jesus’ ministry is all about: evangelization or bringing Good News. In fact, the Gospel begins with the phrase: “Here begins the Good News of Jesus Christ, Son of God.” After a very short interlude about John the Baptist and Jesus’ Baptism, we find Jesus healing in chapter 2. By chapter 3, He is already sending His disciples out on mission, giving them authority to preach, heal and exorcise demons. As chapter 4 begins, Jesus is telling us parables that makes it clear the Kingdom of God is at hand. More importantly, all these parables point out that Jesus’ disciples have a responsibility to sow the seed that will grow into God’s Kingdom. In today’s Gospel, we have the third and fourth parable contained in chapter 4 and both of these highlights how important it is for us to sow the seed of Good News so that it may grow into God’s Kingdom. Sadly, far too many Catholics think of themselves as the “seed” instead of as the “sower.” But we are never the “seed.” In the first parable, the “Parable of the Sower,” the seed is God’s Word being planted in the world. We are the dirt path, the rocky soil, the patch of thorns or the good soil, but we are never the seed. No, we are the ones who receive the seed and make it grow in our hearts so that our lives will produce a harvest. How we receive the seed determines if and how much of a harvest we will produce. In the next parable, we become the lamp which must shine and give light to others, so that they do not stumble. In today’s parables, WE SOW THE SEED that will grow while we sleep or will grow into the large mustard shrub and welcome others. Putting these four parables together, we see that Jesus was the Sower, but those who follow Him must also learn how to sow! Renew My Church is really about learning how to become sowers of the seed. Discipleship is not about sitting down and learning from Jesus. Those who are called to be Jesus’ disciples are also called to go on mission. We pray and reflect carefully upon what God’s Word has produced in us so that we may then go and proclaim the Word in a manner that will help others to receive it and grow closer to Jesus as well. If we cannot share our faith, it is quite possible that we have never stopped to reflect upon what faith means to us. Sure, we can attend Mass, go to confession, live holy lives, but that does not mean we understand why we do all these things or what they mean to us. As today’s first parable tells us, faith’s seed just grew in us day after day and we didn’t know how. Children often ask questions about their faith and parents find it difficult to answer them. Why? Because we fail to reflect, we fail to challenge ourselves. Renew My Church asks us to change this attitude so that our faith becomes deliberate and alive and inviting. Like the mustard shrub, the Church makes a home for many people because the faith we proclaim speaks to everyone willing to listen. But if we never speak of our faith, how will anyone know how wonderful it is? Today, we welcome our newest members from Resurrection and Immaculate Heart of Mary parishes. They are here to sow the seeds of friendship with us, so that together we will become sowers of Good News. Thank you! Peace,
LA MEDIDA DE LA MERCED “Sembrando la Semilla”
Muy al principio del Evangelio de Marcos, aprendemos sobre el ministerio de Jesús: evangelización o llevar la Buena Nueva. De hecho, el Evangelio comienza con la frase: “Este es el comienzo de la Buena Nueva de Jesucristo (Hijo de Dios)”. Después de un interludio muy corto sobre Juan el Bautista y el Bautismo de Jesús, encontramos a Jesús sanando en el capítulo 2. Para el capítulo 3, Él ya está enviando a predicar a Sus discípulos, dándoles autoridad para predicar, sanar y exorcizar demonios. Al comienzo del capítulo 4, Jesús nos está contando parábolas que dejan en claro que el Reino de Dios está cerca. Más importante aún, todas estas parábolas señalan que los discípulos de Jesús tienen la responsabilidad de sembrar la semilla que crecerá en el Reino de Dios. En el Evangelio de hoy, la tercera y cuarta parábola son abarcadas en el capítulo 4, y ambas resaltan lo importante que es para nosotros sembrar la semilla de la Buena Nueva para que pueda crecer en el Reino de Dios. Lamentablemente, demasiados católicos se ven a sí mismos como la “semilla” en lugar de como el “sembrador”. Pero nunca somos la “semilla”. En la primera parábola, la “Parábola del Sembrador”, la semilla es la Palabra de Dios que se está sembrando en el mundo. Somos el terreno, el suelo rocoso, los espinos o la tierra buena, pero nunca somos la semilla. No, somos nosotros los que recibimos la semilla y la hacemos crecer en nuestros corazones para que nuestras vidas produzcan fruto. Cómo recibimos la semilla determina si y cuánto fruto vamos a producir. En la siguiente parábola, nos convertimos en la lámpara que debe brillar y dar luz a los demás, para que no tropiecen. En las parábolas de hoy, NOSOTROS SEMBRAMOS LA SEMILLA que crecerá mientras dormimos o crecerá en el gran arbusto de mostaza y dará la bienvenida a otros. Poniendo estas cuatro parábolas juntas, vemos que Jesús era el Sembrador, ¡pero aquellos que lo siguen también deben aprender a sembrar! Renueva Mi Iglesia habla realmente de como aprender a ser sembradores de la semilla. El discipulado no habla de sentarse y aprender de Jesús. Aquellos que están llamados a ser discípulos de Jesús también son llamados a ir a proclamar. Oramos y reflexionamos cuidadosamente sobre lo que la Palabra de Dios ha producido en nosotros para que luego podamos ir y proclamar la Palabra de una manera que ayude a otros a recibirla y crecer más cerca de Jesús también. Si no podemos compartir nuestra fe, es muy posible que nunca nos hayamos detenido a reflexionar sobre lo que la fe significa para nosotros. Claro, podemos asistir a misa, ir a la confesión, vivir vidas santas, pero eso no significa que entendamos por qué hacemos todas estas cosas o lo que significan para nosotros. Como nos dice la primera parábola de hoy, la semilla de la fe crecía en nosotros día tras día y no sabíamos cómo. Los niños a menudo hacen preguntas sobre su fe y a los padres les resulta difícil responderlas. ¿Por qué? Porque no reflexionamos, no nos desafiamos a nosotros mismos. Renueva Mi Iglesia nos pide que cambiemos esta actitud para que nuestra fe sea motivada, llena de vida y acogedora. Al igual que el arbusto de mostaza, la Iglesia hace un hogar para muchas personas porque la fe que proclamamos habla a todos los que están dispuestos a escuchar. Pero si nunca hablamos de nuestra fe, ¿cómo sabrá alguien lo maravillosa que es? Hoy, damos la bienvenida a nuestros nuevos miembros de las parroquias Resurrección e Inmaculado Corazón de María. Since the pandemic, a number of practices and devotions have been denied to us. Others, we have struggled to maintain. With the removal of many restrictions, it is important to reflect upon what our Liturgy means to us. First, “liturgy” is from the Greek and it means, “The work of the people.” “Eucharist” is also from Greek and it means, “to give thanks.” By definition, our work as God’s people is to give thanks to God! That is why symbols, actions and prayers of our liturgies and Masses are so important: they reflect our thankfulness as God’s people. The difference between a liturgy and a devotion is that our devotions arise from piety and our love for God. Devotions can be both public and private (saying the rosary alone or in a group, etc.). Liturgies are always public—even when a priest says a “private Mass,” another minister is presumed to be present or it is celebrated in union with the whole Church. Liturgies come from our apostolic tradition while devotions come most often from personal spirituality (the Divine Mercy chaplet, etc.). The Church may “approve” of certain devotions and formalize their structure, but this only affirms what people of faith are already doing. On the other hand, the Church sets forth liturgies (Eucharistic and non-Eucharistic) as a way for God’s people to complete their common responsibility to give thanks and praise together. One common misunderstanding in our community is the difference between personal devotion and public prayer while at Mass. Because it is the most important public liturgy, the Church has issued very clear guidelines on when people sit, stand and even how to receive Communion. The Bishop and even a Pastor is given authority to adjust these actions to reflect the community’s needs. People participating at Mass are expected to act as One Body of Christ while at Mass by using the same gestures and postures. Although we may have a private devotion which calls us to kneel before Communion,
that is not what Christ’s Body is told to do at that moment. In accord with the Liturgical norms, we stand when receiving Communion here at OLM. To place one’s personal devotion ahead of the Church is not piety; it is selfishness and dangerous to others. Please, let us all worship together!
Desde la pandemia, se nos han negado una serie de prácticas y devociones. Otras, nos ha costado mantener. Con la elimina-ción de muchas restricciones, es importante reflexionar sobre lo que nuestra Liturgia significa para nosotros. Primero, “liturgia” proviene del griego y significa, “La obra del pueblo”. “Eucaristía” proviene también del griego y signifi-ca, “acción de dar gracias”. ¡Por definición, nuestro trabajo como pueblo de Dios es dar gracias a Dios! Es por eso que los símbolos, las acciones y las oraciones de nuestras liturgias y misas son tan importantes: reflejan nuestro agradecimiento como pueblo de Dios. La diferencia entre una liturgia y una devoción es que nuestras devociones surgen de la piedad y nuestro amor por Dios. Las devociones pueden ser tanto públicas como privadas (rezando el rosario por sí solo o en grupo, etc.). Las liturgias siempre son públicas, incluso cuando un sacerdote dice una “Misa privada”, se presume que otro ministro está presente o se celebra en unión con toda la Iglesia. Las liturgias provienen de nuestra tradición apostólica, mientras que las devociones pro-vienen más a menudo de la espiritualidad personal (la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia, etc.). La Iglesia puede “aprobar” ciertas devociones y formalizar su estructura, pero esto sólo afirma lo que las personas de fe ya están haciendo. Debido a que es la liturgia pública más impor-tante, la Iglesia ha emitido directrices muy claras sobre cuándo las personas se sientan, se ponen de pie e incluso cómo recibir la Comunión. El Obispo e incluso un Párroco se le da autoridad para ajustar estas acciones para reflejar las necesidades de la comunidad. Se espera que las personas que participan en la Misa actúen como Un Solo Cuerpo de Cristo mientras están en la Misa usando los mismos gestos y posturas. Aunque podamos tener una devoción privada que nos llama a arrodillarnos ante la Comunión, eso no es lo que se le dice al Cuerpo de Cristo que haga en ese momento. De acuerdo con las normas litúrgicas, permanecemos de pie cuando recibimos la Comunión aquí en La Merced. Poner la devoción personal primero en lugar de la Iglesia misma no es piedad; es egoísmo y un peligro para los demás. ¡Por favor, adoremos to-dos juntos!

We would like to encourage families to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life and to ask their children if they have an interest in learning more about a religious vocation. Each week, a family at Mass will be invited to take home the “Vocation Chalice and Paten” which comes from Jerusalem. Each day, we ask the family to say a special vocations prayer, to pray for our priests, our deacons, the religious sisters, and missionaries like Father Zacharias in Tanzania. If you are interested in bringing the Vocation Chalice and Paten to your home, please call the Rectory for more information.
