Dear Friends at St. Louise,

Happy first Sunday of Lent! I am writing this column while the snow has covered the ground around us, so it seems a little strange to be explaining that the English word “Lent” means “springtime.” But this is the time of year when we start to notice that the days are getting longer, the weather (at least at times) is warmer, and we who have gardens think about working the earth and planting seeds and seedlings for the harvest we hope will come in the summer and early fall.

One way to think about the Lenten Season is as a 40-day “retreat” that the whole Church, throughout the world, makes together through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. What can you do to add to your prayer life this Lent? It is always best to set realistic and achievable goals. If prayer has mostly fallen by the wayside for you, start with as little as two or three, at the most five, minutes a day. Read a short passage from Scripture, or even spend those few minutes in meditation and silence. Don’t be surprised by distractions – they always happen, even to those most experienced in prayer. There is a saying that goes, “When we stop to pray, the mind will play.” That does not mean that the prayer is a waste of time! God will still bless the time you give to Him. You may at some later time realize the blessing of peace or the gift of wisdom or whatever gift God sees best to give to you. Prayer helps us to see with more clarity the gifts that God is constantly showering upon us.

Eating less during Lent can be an aid to prayer. Too often, if we try to pray on a full stomach, we will all too easily fall asleep. Physical hunger can help us to be more aware of our spiritual hunger and to be more attentive to spiritual food, which is Christ the Lord. Our fasting can help us to be in solidarity with the one billion-plus people in the world who go to bed hungry every day. If we spend less money on ourselves, we will have more to give to the poor. Lent is a time to examine ourselves and our habits – how often do we spend money on our wants as opposed to our needs? Especially in Lent we may ask ourselves: What sacrifice might I make during Lent to make a more generous gift to charities that serve the poor, like “Operation Rice Bowl”?

Have a blessed Lenten Season!

Fr. Gary Zender

Padre Gary Zender

Catholic Home Missions Collection February 20th – 21st Spe-cial Collection: www.usccb.org/committees/catholic-home-missions Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered home mission territory, because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their com-munities. These dioceses face challenges due to priest shortages, lack of

funds, remote geography, or impoverished parishes. Through annual grants, the Catholic Home Mission Collection funds catechesis, seminarian education, lay ministry training, His-panic ministry and other pastoral programs. As a result of pa-rishioners’ generosity, Catholic Home Missions impacts the lives of nearly nine million Catholics in the United States.
