Harden not Your Heart In today’s first reading from the book of Deuteronomy, we hear Moses telling the Israelites that God will continue to send people who will speak God’s words to them. We know they didn’t always listen to God’s messengers. Many didn’t even listen to Jesus! Their hearts were hardened, not open to hearing God speaking to them.
St. Paul also encouraged the people of Corinth to keeps their actions focused on God. In that time, Paul believed that Jesus’ second coming would be in his life time. He wasn’t talking against marriage, but about things of this world that would distract people from opening their hearts and minds to God. I know that sometimes family issues and the messiness of the world can make me anxious. This reminder from St. Paul can help me stay focused on God as a way to deal and cope with the trials in life. The key is to not allow my heart to harden but to keep it pliable and to allow God to work in it.
The Responsorial Psalm boldly reminds me that if today I hear God’s voice, harden not my heart. This involves two actions on my part. First, I must listen in order to hear God speaking to me. I must be aware of all the different opportunities God uses to speak to me. Then I must keep my heart open to accepting the message God speaks to me. If my heart is hardened I will miss many of the chances God is offering me.
Mark’s Gospel today shows how even the unclean spirits heard Jesus. When he commanded them to come out, they did. The person whom the unclean spirit had control over must have had a heart open to the Word of God. What kind of unclean spirits or demons can have control over us? Addiction, racism, prejudice, to name a few, can consume us and take control of our actions. These behaviors harden our hearts to hearing God’s word. These actions cause the anxieties that keep us from focusing on God’s will for us. Naming them and acknowledging them can be the first step in getting rid of them. Opening our hardened hearts and allowing God’s love into them can also help us get rid of the demons in our lives.
If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your hearts.

Our Weekly Reflection/Nuestra reflexión seminal Mrs. (Sra.) Terry Navarro
FALSE PROPHETS, TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice, the Holy One of God. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn’t an authority because he was popular or famous. We also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God’s purposes. And today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God’s very words filling our mouths.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

No Endurezcas tu Corazón

Please Make Your Gift to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal
Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world.
Many families in our parish will be receiving the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes and schools who receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gifts. Please return your response as soon as possible.
The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world.” This is especially important during these trying and challenging times. Many in our parishes are affected financially by the pandemic, and we encourage giving at all levels to support this initiative.
In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the archdiocese, the Annual Catholic Appeal funds services in our own parish.
When we financially support the work of our parish, our archdiocese and the Catholic Church throughout the world, we experience a feeling of deep gratitude, especially when we contemplate God’s many gifts to us personally. By sharing our wealth through gifts to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal, we demonstrate our commitment to the Church and each other.
