4th SUNDAY of EASTER ~ & WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS ~ In the final reference to shepherd and sheep in chapter 10 of John’s gospel, Jesus speaks most intimately about the relationship he has with His people. Jesus (shepherd) knows His disciples (sheep). They hear my voice and they follow me. He speaks of no one being able to take them out of his caring hand. His claim for them is that they will never end nor perish. He further claims all of this to be true because first they are in the Father’s hand and they were given to him (Jesus) by the Father. It is in this context that
he reveals the most amazing claim of all: “the Father and I are one.” The intimacy, love and caring spoken of here by Jesus could lead one to think that this is all about love and peace. But when read in the context of the whole chapter, clearly danger, wolves, thieves and marauders lurk everywhere to destroy the sheep. Joined, today, with the 1st reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we see that the message of Jesus draws forth jealousy, hatred and wrath. True discipleship brings joy and peace; but often those gifts are the fruit that emerges from suffering, pain, rejection, jealousy and other realities of sin. In this world filled with so many voices and most of them overwhelmingly loud, it might seem an impossible task to hear the voice of the Lord. It won’t be because it is loud or piercing that we shall hear it. It is because it is persistent and profoundly loving – it is clearly the intimacy of that voice that makes it so able to be heard, understood and followed. There is still a deeper significance to the Shepherd and his sheep. In his deep, abiding desire to protect and care for his sheep, Jesus shares this ‘shepherding’ with sinful men in the sacrament of priesthood. On this Good Shepherd Sunday, everyone at Mass today is invited to ‘have the eyes and the voice of Jesus’ in seeing and recognizing the qualities of priesthood. Further, on this Good Shepherd Sunday, all are asked to ‘voice the call of the Lord’ by inviting someone to consider a vocation to priesthood. If you see the qualities of a vocation, give voice to that personal call. Ask someone to consider a vocation (calling) to priesthood, the deaconate or religious life. Invite them to discernment – to listen to a possible inner call – an inner voice. Tell them you will pray for them, to be at their side, to encourage them to consider the call! Certainly no harm could come from that and quite possibly, through you - someone may hear the call.

NOVENA OF MASSES — A novena of Masses for those mothers, living or deceased whose names are given to
us started today, May 12 and concludes on Monday, May 20. Cards and envelopes are available in the church. The envelopes with the names can be placed in the regular collection or left at
the Pastoral Center. For living mothers there are cards in the envelope which can be given to them.
2019 marks the 56TH Anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. — The purpose of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations is to publicly fulfill the Lord’s instruction to,
“Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into His harvest” (Mt. 9:38; Lk 10:2). As a climax to a prayer that is continually offered throughout the Church, it affirms the primacy of faith and grace in all that concerns vocations to the priesthood and to the consecrated life. While appreciating all vocations, the Church concentrates its attention this day on vocations to the ordained ministries (Priesthood and Diaconate), to the Religious Life in all its forms (male and female, contemplative and apostolic), to societies of apostolic life, to secular institutes in their diversity of services and membership and to the missionary life, in the particular sense of mission “ad gentes”.
We wish a very HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to all the beautiful mothers of our Parish. May God bless you and your very unique and most wonderful vocation!!

4º Domingo de Pascua y el Día Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones ~ En la mensión final sobre el pastor y las ovejas en el capítulo 10 del Evangelio de Juan, Jesús habla íntimamente acerca de la relación que tiene con su pueblo. Jesús (el pastor) conoce a sus discípulos (las ovejas). Ellos escuchan mi voz y me siguen. Se refiere a que nadie puede arrebatarlas de su amoroso cuidado. Su afirmación para ellos es que nunca perecerán sino que tendran vida eterna. Afirma, además, que todo esto es verdad porque primero estaban en manos del Padre y fueron entregadas (a Jesús) por el Padre. Es en
este contexto en el que se revela la más sorprendente afirmación de todas: "El Padre y yo somos uno". La intimidad, el amor y el cuidado al que se refiere Jesús podría llevarlo a uno a pensar que todo se refiere al amor y a la paz. Pero cuando se lee en el contexto de todo el capítulo, peligro inminente, lobos, ladrones y merodeadores están al acecho en todas partes para destruir las ovejas. Hoy, en la 1ª lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, vemos que el mensaje de Jesús provoca celos, odio y enojo. El verdadero discipulado trae consigo alegría y paz; pero a menudo esos dones son frutos que surgen del sufrimiento, del dolor, del rechazo, de los celos y de otras realidades del pecado. En este mundo lleno de tantas voces y la mayoría de ellas abrumadoramente estruendosas, parecería una tarea imposible el poder oír la voz del Señor. No será porque es fuerte o penetrante que la vamos a escuchar. Es porque es persistente y profundamente amorosa. Es claramente la intimidad de esa voz que la hace capaz de ser escuchada, comprendida y seguida. Todavía hay un significado más profundo del Pastor y sus ovejas. En su profundo y permanente deseo de proteger y cuidar a sus ovejas, Jesús comparte este 'pastoreo' con los pescadores en el Sacramento del Sacerdocio. En este feliz Domingo del Buen Pastor, durante la Misa todos estamos invitados a 'tener los ojos y la voz de Jesús' a ver y reconocer las cualidades de sacerdocio. Además, en este Domingo del Buen Pastor, se nos pide a todos a ser la ’voz del llamado del Señor’, invitando a alguien a considerar la vocación al sacerdocio. Si usted ve las cualidades de una vocación, de voz a ese llamado personal. Pida a alguien considerar la vocación (llamado) al sacerdocio, a la vida religiosa o al diaconado. Invíteles al discernimiento para escuchar a un posible llamado interior — una voz interior. Dígales que va a orar por ellos, que va a estar a su lado, para animarles a considerar el llamado! Ciertamente, ningún daño puede venir de eso y muy posiblemente, a través de usted, alguien pueda escuchar el llamado.

El 2019 marca el 56 Aniversario del Día Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones. — El propósito de la Jornada Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones es cumplir
públicamente la instrucción del Señor de "orar al Señor de la mies que envíe obreros a su mies" (Mt 09:38; Lc 10: 2). Como un climax a una oración que se ofrece continuamente a través de la Iglesia, que afirma la primacía de la fe y la gracia en todo lo que concierne a las vocaciones al sacerdocio y a la vida consagrada.
Si bien la Iglesia reconoce todas las vocaciones, el día de hoy presta toda su atención sobre las vocaciones a los ministerios ordenados (Sacerdocio y Diaconía), a la Vida Religiosa en todas sus formas (masculino y femenino, contemplativa y apostólica), a las Sociedades de Vida Apostólica, a Institutos Seglares en su diversidad de miembros y servicios y a la vida misionera en el sentido particular de la misión "para el pueblo."
