Top 10 films 1989-2012

From this table it shows that the 3rd top grossing film between 1989 and 2013 is the romantic tragedy Titanic. Titanic was released in 1997 and is still continuing to gain audiences, making £80.1 million. This shows that the genre must be popular from the year 1989 up to the present day. Because of the evidence shown of Titanic’s continuing popularity, the genre has had a stable amount of popularity over time, with a varying audience.

Romantic Tragedies released this year (2013)

The most recent release of a romantic tragedy in the UK is the film ‘About Time’. Within the weekend of 13-15th September this film ranked 4th in the box office making a gross to date of £3 million which is the highest total gross to date out of all the films released for the same weekend. This shows that the genre and film must have been appealing to cinema audiences, showing that romantic tragedies must be a successful and popular genre at UK cinemas.

Romantic Tragedies released last year (2012)

Two romance films were released during a weekend of September 2012. This table shows that the film ‘Hope Springs’ and ‘To Rome with Love’ ranked 6th and 14th in the box office for the weekend of their release.

These releases were not as successful as romance films released more recently, as ‘To Rome with Love’ only made £141,008 during its first weekend release. The fact these films made less than this year shows that the romance genre is increasing in popularity as they have tended to make more recently.

Production and Genre

From this table I can see that romance films have only made up 5.2% of the total box office.

Although this isn’t a high number within the box office, it still proves to be more popular than genres such as Music/dance, Drama, War, Crime etc and dominates the box office the same amount as the Horror genre.

Overall, the romance genre ranks 6th of the most popular genre releases in the UK, showing that it must be popular in the UK.
