Today we hear how Jonah, sent by God to warn the people, storms through the streets of Nineveh, scaring the ci zens out of their wits. And it works! God has a change of heart, seeing “by their ac ons” how the people turn from evil (Jonah 3:10). A new day dawns.
Next we hear Paul telling the Corinthians, “The world in its present form is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:31). He calls for a change of heart. Stopping short of telling them to stop carrying out their everyday ac vi es, he urges them—rather mysteriously—to live “as though” they aren’t doing the things they are doing. A new day has dawned. Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of God is at hand!” (Mark 1:14). Simon and Andrew abandon their nets—and even their father—and follow him. A new day had dawned.

Reflec ons with the Word of God from the priests of St. Cecilia Parish
Read Jonah 3:1-5, 10 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 Mark 1:14-20 Jesus asks his Church, “Will you teach others to follow me?”
What was it like for the fishermen to leave everything and follow Jesus? They had already met him and felt profoundly a racted to his iden ty and doctrine. To become a fisher of men meant they could pass on to others the truth of mee ng and knowing God in person! This “knowing” would far surpass any material thing on earth, which is always in a state of dying and passing away. Faith and disciple-ship meant everything for life in Jesus’ eternal kingdom. If we are to follow Christ our soul must be free from a achments; from vanity to an excessive desire to live in self-absorbed comfort. When the heart is based on riches and materialism there is no room for God or to consider an invita on to follow him. Yet, there are people throughout the centuries who saw through the illusion of “things” and found Jesus to be their true treasure and purpose for life.
For example, a er receiving Holy Communion Sr. Faus na Kowalska discerned Jesus’ greatest delight is to unite himself with souls. She could hear his voice speak, “I love them tenderly and wish to fill them with powerful graces, but their minds are distracted with worldly things, many stay away, and remain indifferent.” Sr. Faus na dedicated much me praying for and teaching others to experience the love of Jesus in the Eucharist and to carry on his mission.
Following Jesus fills us with a desire to do something good everyday for God; without needing reward. Living life to the fullest will simply be a desire to leave an inheritance - an example of loving God, our neighbor as self, always generous, not offending others and trea ng others kindly even when they offend us. Are we willing to become true fishers of men and women for Jesus?

Jesús le pregunta a su Iglesia: "¿Enseñarás a los demás a seguirme?"
¿Cómo fue para los pescadores dejar todo y seguir a Jesús? Ya lo habían conocido y se sen an profundamente atraídos por su iden dad y doctrina. ¡Llegar a ser pescador de hombres significaba que podían transmi r a los demás la verdad de conocer a Dios en persona! Este "saber" supera con creces cualquier cosa material en la erra, que siempre está en un estado de muerte. La fe y el discipulado significaban todo por la vida en el reino eterno de Jesús.
Si queremos seguir a Cristo, nuestra alma debe estar libre de apegos; de la vanidad a un deseo excesivo de vivir en la comodidad en sí mismo. Cuando el corazón se basa en riquezas y materialismo no hay lugar para Dios ni para considerar una invitación a seguirlo. Sin embargo, hay personas a lo largo de los siglos que vieron a través de la ilusión de "cosas" y encontraron a Jesús como su verdadero tesoro y propósito para la vida.
Por ejemplo, después de recibir la Santa Comunión Santa Faus na Kowalska discernió el mayor deleite de Jesús es unirse a las almas. Podía oír su voz hablar: "Los amo con ternura y deseo llenarlos de poderosas gracias, pero sus mentes están distraídas con cosas munditas, muchas se man enen alejadas y permanecen indiferentes".
Santa Faus na dedicó mucho empo orando y enseñando a los demás a experimentar el amor de Jesús en la Eucaris a y a con nuar su misión. Seguir a Jesús nos llena de deseo de hacer algo bueno todos los días por Dios; sin necesidad de recompensa. Vivir la vida al máximo será simplemente un deseo de dejar una herencia - un ejemplo de amar a Dios, nuestro prójimo como uno mismo, siempre generoso, no ofender a los demás y tratar a los demás amablemente incluso cuando nos ofenden. ¿Estamos dispuestos a conver rnos en verdaderos pescadores de hombres y mujeres para Jesús?

PART III APOSTOLIC LETTER: PATRIS CORDE OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS
2. A tender and loving father Joseph saw Jesus grow daily “in wisdom and in years and in divine and human favour” (Lk 2:52).
As the Lord had done with Israel, so Joseph did with Jesus: he taught him to walk, taking him by the hand; he was for him like a father who raises an infant to his cheeks, bending down to him and feeding him (cf. Hos 11:3-4). In Joseph, Jesus saw the tender love of God: “As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him” (Ps 103:13). In the synagogue, during the praying of the Psalms, Joseph would surely have heard again and again that the God of Israel is a God of tender love,[11] who is good to all, whose “compassion is over all that he has made” (Ps 145:9).
The history of salvation is worked out “in hope against hope” (Rom 4:18), through our weaknesses. All too often, we think that God works only through our better parts, yet most of his plans are realized in and despite our frailty. Thus Saint Paul could say: “To keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me: ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness’” (2 Cor 12:7-9). Since this is part of the entire economy of salvation, we must learn to look upon our weaknesses with tender mercy.[12] The evil one makes us see and condemn our frailty, whereas the Spirit brings it to light with tender love. Tenderness is the best way to touch the frailty within us. Pointing fingers and judging others are frequently signs of an inability to accept our own weaknesses, our own frailty. Only tender love will save us from the snares of the accuser (cf. Rev 12:10). That is why it is so important to encounter God’s mercy, especially in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, where we experience his truth and tenderness. Paradoxically, the evil one can also speak the truth to us, yet he does so only to condemn us. We know that God’s truth does not condemn, but instead welcomes, embraces, sustains and forgives us. That truth always presents itself to us like the merciful father in Jesus’ parable (cf. Lk 15:11-32). It comes out to meet us, restores our dignity, sets us back on our feet and rejoices for us, for, as the father says: “This my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found” (v. 24). Even through Joseph’s fears, God’s will, his history and his plan were at work. Joseph, then, teaches us that faith in God includes believing that he can work even through our fears, our frailties and our weaknesses. He also teaches us that amid the tempests of life, we must never be afraid to let the Lord steer our course. At times, we want to be in complete control, yet God always sees the bigger picture.

2. Padre en la ternura José vio a Jesús progresar día tras día «en sabiduría, en estatura y en gracia ante Dios y los hombres» (Lc 2,52).
Como hizo el Señor con Israel, así él “le enseñó a caminar, y lo tomaba en sus brazos: era para él como el padre que alza a un niño hasta sus mejillas, y se inclina hacia él para darle de comer” (cf. Os 11,3-4). Jesús vio la ternura de Dios en José: «Como un padre siente ternura por sus hijos, así el Señor siente ternura por quienes lo temen» (Sal 103,13). En la sinagoga, durante la oración de los Salmos, José ciertamente habrá oído el eco de que el Dios de Israel es un Dios de ternura[11], que es bueno para todos y «su ternura alcanza a todas las criaturas» (Sal 145,9).
La historia de la salvación se cumple creyendo «contra toda esperanza» (Rm 4,18) a través de nuestras debilidades. Muchas veces pensamos que Dios se basa sólo en la parte buena y vencedora de nosotros, cuando en realidad la mayoría de sus designios se realizan a través y a pesar de nuestra debilidad. Esto es lo que hace que san Pablo diga: «Para que no me engría tengo una espina clavada en el cuerpo, un emisario de Satanás que me golpea para que no me engría. Tres veces le he pedido al Señor que la aparte de mí, y él me ha dicho: “¡Te basta mi gracia!, porque mi poder se manifiesta plenamente en la debilidad”» (2 Co 12,7-9). Si esta es la perspectiva de la economía de la salvación, debemos aprender a aceptar nuestra debilidad con intensa ternura[12]. El Maligno nos hace mirar nuestra fragilidad con un juicio negativo, mientras que el Espíritu la saca a la luz con ternura. La ternura es el mejor modo para tocar lo que es frágil en nosotros. El dedo que señala y el juicio que hacemos de los demás son a menudo un signo de nuestra incapacidad para aceptar nuestra propia debilidad, nuestra propia fragilidad. Sólo la ternura nos salvará de la obra del Acusador (cf. Ap 12,10). Por esta razón es importante encontrarnos con la Misericordia de Dios, especialmente en el sacramento de la Reconciliación, teniendo una experiencia de verdad y ternura. Paradójicamente, incluso el Maligno puede decirnos la verdad, pero, si lo hace, es para condenarnos. Sabemos, sin embargo, que la Verdad que viene de Dios no nos condena, sino que nos acoge, nos abraza, nos sostiene, nos perdona. La Verdad siempre se nos presenta como el Padre misericordioso de la parábola (cf. Lc 15,11-32): viene a nuestro encuentro, nos devuelve la dignidad, nos pone nuevamente de pie, celebra con nosotros, porque «mi hijo estaba muerto y ha vuelto a la vida, estaba perdido y ha sido encontrado» (v. 24). También a través de la angustia de José pasa la voluntad de Dios, su historia, su proyecto. Así, José nos enseña que tener fe en Dios incluye además creer que Él puede actuar incluso a través de nuestros miedos, de nuestras fragilidades, de nuestra debilidad. Y nos enseña que, en medio de las tormentas de la vida, no debemos tener miedo de ceder a Dios el timón de nuestra barca. A veces, nosotros quisiéramos tener todo bajo control, pero Él tiene siempre una mirada más amplia.
