Ask Father Paul: “Since prayer is ‘the key to salvation,’ why do we need Sacraments, and why do I need to go to Mass? I can always pray the Lord’s Prayer elsewhere, all by myself.” You seem to think that the “our,” “us,” and “we” in the Lord’s

Prayer could just as well have been “my,” “me,” and “I.” Not

so! Along with the love which is forgiving, the unity and gather-

ing of God’s people is forever on Jesus’ Heart. You also seem to

think that “Hallowed be Thy Name” does not include going to

Mass to worship God as He desires us to worship Him. Let’s not

fool ourselves. Whenever Catholics speak of prayer as the key to

salvation, we properly mean ALL the prayers that God wants

each of us to pray, at Mass and otherwise. When Jesus first gave

His Disciples the Lord’s Prayer, they were already faithful to the

rituals and sacrifices of the Temple, and praying their Synagogue

prayers, like He Himself was accustomed to do (Luke 4:16).

Jesus then decided to give them the Lord’s Prayer as the perfect

daily supplement to their Temple and Synagogue obligations, so

that none of them would forget to pray for everything truly need-

ed to enter the Kingdom. Later, but no later than His Ascension

into Heaven, He gave to His Apostles the Seven Sacraments as

infallible means of grace. Ever since Abraham’s day, the salva-

tion of God’s people has never depended solely on prayer, though

devout prayer has always been necessary as a means of grace, and

part of sacramental rituals, Hebrew and Christian. There is a

close tie between salvation and going weekly to Mass, and pray-

ing the prayers during the Divine Liturgy as our “sacrifice of

praise” (Hebrews 10:25-27, 13:10-15). The Lord’s Prayer is the

perfect prayer. There are no degrees of perfection. But our Eu-

charistic prayers at Mass are now the most powerful prayers.

Why? Because whenever we join the priest in praying them, the

entire Christ mysteriously becomes “Really Present” to join us to

Himself in His redemptive intercessions. For us to enter Heaven

as faithful disciples of Jesus, let’s cultivate right attitudes of

heart, do good deeds of love, meet all our Mass and Penitential

obligations, frequent the Sacraments, and pray the Lord’s Prayer

at least once every day. With these as firm habits, only our of-

fending God seriously, and then refusing to repent until death,

can cause us to perish forever. Because such an everlasting trage-

dy begins with our yielding to temptation, Jesus has wisely taught

us all to pray, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from

Evil.” Prayer is the way to escape temptations (1 Corinthians

10:13). In such dire situations, to reflect fully upon the tempta-

tion, and then to decide freely NOT to pray for the grace to avoid

mortal sin, seriously offends God, according to Alphonsus Li-

gouri, a Saint and Doctor of the Church. For more, I recommend

the short, but more recent, and powerful book by Fr. Michael

Mueller, Prayer: The Key to Salvation. It is sold by TAN Books.

MASS BOOK The funeral of a loved one should not be the last time we pray for them. Lighting candles is nice, but the Mass is the most powerful prayer on earth today. Dates are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. Daily Mass in-tentions are especially needed at this time. The offering is just $10.00. Call the rectory today to schedule one.

There are 3 money prizes, which are based on the percentage of ticket proceeds. The more tickets sold the higher the amount of the 3 prizes. So get your tickets by AUGUST 25TH. Make Money by Cutting Grass—and Trimming Father Rothermel is now interviewing for a qualified adult worker to cut all grass as needed, within our two-acre parish cemetery in Tremont, and trim all the headstones. A single complete cutting and trimming of Immaculate Conception Cemetery is a full day of work for one person. As a part-time employee of the parish, he or she would get a paycheck but no benefits. But he or she would be allowed to use the full range of parish equipment. Training and use will be at no cost. Contractors are also welcome to offer bids in order to cut our grass, and trim. But such companies must provide coverage of sufficient liability insurance. If interested, please call the rectory at (570)695-3648.
