THE THIRD TRUSTEE OF SAINT JOSEPH ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

As you may know, Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Church is a 501(3)c, not for profit Religious Organization, that was incorporated on September 21, 1864. As a civil corporation, there are legal requirements and duties of the corporation in order to be recognized according to the laws of the State of New Jersey. Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Church is also established (erected) under the Universal Law of the Church as found in The Code of Canon Law. Canon 515 §1 states:

A parish is a certain community of the Christian faithful stably constituted in a particular church, whose pastoral care is entrusted to a pastor (parochus) as its proper pastor (pastor) under the authority of the diocesan bishop.

As such, there are also requirements and duties of each parish according to the Universal Law of the Church as well as the particular law of the diocese. In particular, one of these requirements is that there be at least two (2) Trustees in each parish. Currently, Saint Joseph Church has two Trustees, Mr. George Hayek and Mrs. Dorothy Bosi. On November 30, 2015, by the request and “votum” of Father ST Sutton he has requested from the bishop that Mr. Gerard “Jerry” Woodring be appointed as the third Trustee of the Parish. This selection and election was made after careful and prayerful consultation with the present two Trustees, the Finance Council, the Administrative Staff, along with Father’s own personal interaction and evaluation of Mr. Woodring. Jerry is a practicing Catholic who is currently seventy-five years old, married to his wonderful wife Rosemary, with seven children and two grandchildren. He has lived in Newton for the past forty years and has been an active member of Saint Joseph Parish for the past sixteen years. He is a retired New Jersey Transit Conductor and is presently a Third Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He also serves the parish as a Reader and sacristan. He is active in the Right to Life Ministry, Food Pantry Ministry and delivers bread each Saturday from the Panera Bread Store. A letter was received from the Bishop’s Office on December 21, 2015, accepting Father ST’s request for a third Trustee. Therefore, Mr. Woodring will be officially appointed as the third Trustee of Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Church at the 11:30am Mass. Come and join us as we celebrate this milestone in the life of our local church. WHAT ARE THE DUTIES OF A TRUSTEE? A Trustee shall be kept informed on the parish's performance in all secular areas. Since all management responsibilities concerning secular activities are shared by all Trustees, as such they

have the right to vote upon secular activities which the Pastor deems necessary. See to it that regular meetings are held by the parish Finance Council. Must keep the pastor aware of all

important happenings of the parish affairs when the pastor is unable to attend meetings but authorizes the meeting to take place.

Be cognizant of the administrative staff to insure they are competent, motivated individuals. Review, approve and sign the Annual Parish Finance Report. Insure filing of all required reports. When applicable, vote on required banking resolutions (i.e. change in authorized signature on parish

accounts). Assist with developing policies and monitoring results and convening long term strategies to insure the

financial stability of the parish. If applicable, assist with developing strategies to accelerate repayment of parish debt. Assist with developing policies to insure maintenance of parish facilities. Assist with developing policies that produce proper insurance risk management control for protection of

building and to minimize liability insurance claims. Parish Trustees and pastors are not to initiate or respond to any lawsuit in the name of the parish without the

written permission of the bishop. A Trustee is an ex-officio member of the Parish Finance Council (as such, they are not allowed to vote on any

matter, but they do have a voice). It is with great pride and joy that we welcome Jerry as the Third Trustee of our parish and I personally look forward to working closely with him, as I have with Dorothy and George these past six months. Working harder to work together to make a difference, Father ST
