PARISH OF ST. JOSEPH February 7, 2016

From the Desk of Fr. Philip Kollithanath

Intimate friendship of Jesus is the backbone of Catholic Spiritual Tradition. When we are able to experience the presence of Jesus everything seems well and peaceful. When we do not hear the voice of the Lord within, all other comforts will feel like empty. In moments of trouble a word of Jesus will be of great consolation. When Martha informed Mary that Jesus is come and is asking for her, all tears of sorrow turned into joy of spirit. When we are spiritually alive, it is so dry and hard for a moment to be without Jesus. It is foolish and vanity to seek after the vain desires of this world. Life without Jesus is the real hell and life with Him is the sweet paradise. If Jesus is with us nothing can harm us. Living in the presence of Jesus gives us a true sense of security. One who loses Jesus is the poorest in the world. The one who lives in His grace is the richest. We must train our children very young on how to converse with Jesus every day. The art of keeping Jesus with us by being humble and peaceful. When we are devout and calm Jesus will be with us. We will drive Him away and lose His grace if we turn back to the outside world. We all need a true friend. There is no better friend than Jesus. Without the friendship of Jesus we will be sad and desolate. We should not offend Jesus even if the whole world turns against us. Jesus is our special love. Everything else we love for the sake of Jesus. We love Jesus for His own sake. Jesus must be loved for Him alone. Unlike other friends in the world he is always good and faithful. When we feel this close to Jesus, we can love friends and enemies in Him and for Him. We must pray to Him that all may know and love Him. We must learn to deny worldly inclinations to persons and fame. Avoid the tendency for anyone’s affection be centered on us. Let Jesus be in us all the time. We must have a sense of internal freedom from all affections. We must be pure and free within and should not be entangled with any creature. To experience the sweetness of the Lord we must have a clean and open heart. It is His grace that prepares us and draws us so that we may have the courage to forsake everything to be united with Him alone. When we have God’s grace we can do all things. When it leaves us we will become abandoned and afflicted. But we should not loose heart. Must carefully avoid despair and dejection while calmly await the will of God bearing with whatever happens in the meanwhile. Always look for the opportunity to glorify Jesus and to make Him known and loved as we do our best to remain in His love and grace. Success requires perseverance and conscious effort . we are all called to this spiritual relationship with Jesus. Since it is His

race that qualifies us, nothing should discourage us from making an effort. God bless you all.

As the Roman Empire shattered and collapsed, the bishops were the people best equipped to catch the fall-ing stones. In the West (that’s us), they sought to stabilize society by weaving a structure of laws and courts to uphold the rights and dignity of married couples in a chaotic world. The bishops in the East had a different ap-proach, even allowing the dissolution of marriages in certain cases. To an extent, the bishops took a measure of control away from the fathers of families in order to provide pastoral care for those who suffered most in the social collapse: women and children.

In the West, much of the marriage law was contained in the “penitential books” the bishops devised to regu-late the lives of public sinners. In the seventh century, Theodore of Canterbury’s penitential book said that he had the power to give consent to remarriage in the case of a poor fellow whose wife had been carried off by the Vikings. If the Vikings subsequently brought her back, she could remarry, too! No bishop ever made peace with divorce, but there was never a time when the pastoral concern of the church was not struggling with how to care for people in unhappy situations.
