The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul conducts an evangelization ministry with the Cathedral Ambassadors. This enthusiastic group of trained Ambassadors staffs the Basili-ca every day of the week and is comprised of volunteers from all over the Archdiocese. They answer questions and offer assistance to all who come to the Cathedral Basilica. Cathedral Ambassadors provide a personal presence in the Basilica and most importantly they put a face on the Church. Cathedral Ambassadors are assigned 4 hour shifts. The schedule is flexible with assignments of one day or more a month. Training and materials are provided to support this evangelization ministry.

For more information and to become a Cathe-dral Ambassador, please contact Martha Ortiz, the coordinator of the Cathedral Ambassadors, at

ADULT FAITH FORMATION

Page 4: SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO CHURCH · #220 Please pray for the following people for whom Sanctuary and Saint Anne’s Chapel candles are burning the week of: July 7 — July 13

By Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Posted July 9, 2018

We live in a world obsessed with identity. Everywhere we turn, someone is talking about “self-expression,” “self-identifying,” or “finding yourself.” And rightfully so, because the answer to the question “who am I?” is one of the big-gest questions that we as human beings have to grapple with. It has profound implications for what we do with our lives, why we should be treated with dignity, why and how we will be in relationship, and ultimately, why we should be loved.

On this point, the Church and the world agree. The question of identity is central to the human experience. The problem is that in our modern world we tend to build our identity on unreliable foundations. Often, we tend to identify ourselves not by who we are, but instead by what we do (e.g. “I am a teacher”), or what we desire (e.g. “I am gay”), or the group we belong to (e.g. “I am a Republican”).

However, these ways of identifying ourselves never fully satisfy because they’re based on things that are ultimately pass-ing. Jobs can be lost, desires ebb and flow, and groups fall apart. When we rest our identity on things that don’t last, we risk the despair and confusion that result when they inevitably pass away. We must, then, find our identity in a deeper place.

The famous passage from the Second Vatican Council that was found in virtually every writing of Pope St. John Paul II can help us here: “In reality it is only in the mystery of the Word made flesh that the mystery of man truly becomes clear … Christ the new Adam, in the very revelation of the mystery of the Father and of his love, fully reveals man to himself and brings to light his most high calling” (GS, 22). In other words, the response to the deepest human question “who am I?” is found in the person of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Christ establishes and reveals to us the first and most fundamental identity of every human being: You are a son or a daughter of the Most High God.

The question of identity is at the center of the 2018 Catholic Women’s Conference this October. In choosing the theme “Daughters of the King,” the organizers have made a wise move. In a culture where the question of identity is every-where, they’re inviting women to discover and embrace the one unshakable, permanent and lasting identity that they’ve been given from God: You are a daughter of the King of Heaven and Earth.

A woman’s daughterhood in God is not a pious imagining, a nice name that a woman gives herself in order to feel spe-cial. The identity daughter of God is the most fundamental truth about every woman. It’s the ground of her existence, the source of her beauty, the assurance of her lovability, and the unmovable anchor of her dignity. No matter what cir-cumstances shift and change in her life, a woman’s daughterhood before God, and therefore the fact of her being infi-nitely loved, never change. (The same holds true for men in their sonship before God the Father.)

I invite and warmly encourage women of the Archdiocese to come to the women’s conference this year to encounter and claim your identity as a daughter of the King. I assure you that when this becomes the foundation of your life, the fruits will be tremendous.

THE LEFT HAND OF FORGIVENESS— In our sacristy is a very, very old safe. I never look at it that I don’t remember an old story.

William Sydney Porter found himself in prison in 1900 convicted of embezzlement of bank funds. In reality it was misman-agement of the funds and Porter was the scapegoat for someone else. To try and support his daughter while he was in prison, Porter turned to writing short stories, a profession he had abandoned some years before. After three years in prison he was released but continued to try and earn a living as a short story writer. He moved to New York City where his stories became very popular. It was not long before he was an established successful writer. His characters were often lower and middle class people and he liked to use humor, irony, coincidences and surprise endings to entertain his readers. He went by his pen name of O. Henry.

One such story that he wrote was about a safecracker named Jimmy Valentine. Jimmy was the best at what he did and had the finest set of safecracking tools this side of the Mississippi. He was caught once by Ben Price, a Pinkerton detective and ended up in prison for some 18 months. When Jimmy was released, he found his tools where he had hidden them and started his unique and profitable business right back up again. He was a careful planner and would break open the best safes in banks or in business offices with ease. When he pulled a “job,” Jimmy quickly left the area and moved on to another town and another safe. That is how he came to the small town of Elmore in Arkansas with the intention of cracking the town’s bank’s safe. The bank was owned by a Mr. Adams and when Jimmy went to “case” the bank’s layout he saw Mr. Adams speaking to his daughter, Annabel. One look at Annabel Adams and Jimmy changed into a new man. It was love at first sight. Jimmy introduced himself as Ralph D. Spenser and he was in town to open a shoe store. Six months later the shoe store was doing quite well, Jimmy was engaged to Miss Adams and he had completely given up his former profession. He even wrote a letter to an old friend asking to meet him. He was going to give the friend his suitcase of tools. He was going straight. Annabel had made all the difference.

But for the past six months Ben Price, the Pinkerton detective had been tracking Jimmy and that tracking brought him to Elmore and to the shoe store of Ralph D. Spenser. On that day Jimmy, (Ralph) was taking his suitcase of tools by train to Chicago to give to his friend. He told Annabel that the heavy suitcase was filled with shoe horns that he was returning. An-nabel was walking with Jimmy (Ralph) to the station when they stopped by Mr. Adams bank. Annabel’s sister was leaving her two young daughters, age 6 and 8 at the bank for Mr. Adams to watch. As Mr. Adams talked to Annabel and Ralph, one of the girls playing went into the large safe and her sister shut the door and twirled the knob as she had seen her grandfather do. It locked. Mr. Adams immediately went over and tried to open it, but it was a time lock. The nearest locksmith was 30 miles away. Everyone started to panic. In desperation and hope Annabel asked her fiancé if he could do anything. Jimmy smiled, asked her for the rose she had pinned to her dress. She gave it to him. Then Jimmy ordered everyone away from the safe, knelt down in front of it and opened his suitcase of tools. Jimmy beat his best record of safecracking and had the door opened in five minutes. The child’s life was saved. All the people in the bank were amazed and happy but started to question who Ralph D. Spenser really was. Only one of the people who watched Jimmy opened the safe knew for sure. That was Ben Price. Jimmy got up and started towards the door thinking his hope for marrying Annabel were over. He came up to Ben and said, “Finally got around to finding me, Ben?” But Ben Price did a curious thing. “I don’t think we’ve ever met, Mr. Spenser.” And with that Ben and his knowledge about Jimmy Valentine left the bank. As O. Henry titled the story, Jimmy had received “A Retrieved Reformation.”

Forgiveness is the merciful excusing of a wrong. With our right hand we might offer a hand to shake in forgiveness of a wrong, a serious hurt that the other person has inflicted on us. Yet we also must consider what the left hand of forgiveness is all about. The left hand offers what Ben Price gave: new life, a new chance to be a better person, a new opportunity to be accepted and loved fully, wholly and without reservation. A life where the old sins are forgotten and not used to judge or measure a person’s worth. The left hand is for forgetting the wrong and bringing the person back into the fold. Jesus, in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, offers us both of His hands. We receive the right hand of forgiveness but also the left hand offer of new life, new hope, a new spirit.

This brings us to perhaps re-examine some of our acts of forgiveness. Is there someone who has hurt us deeply that we say we forgive, but we just have not gotten to the point of offering our left hand? Fully forgiving, fully accepting this person back may be too much for us. We might be polite, but we do not trust this person. We are still wary and have our “shields up” around this person. This person might be trying very hard to be a better person. We see it, we hear stories of this person’s “Reformation” but we still hold back. If we look for an example of the left hand of forgiveness we need not go further than the Prodigal Son. The Father took the errant son back, fully, with both hands and gave him life again—a life that he had thrown away. Perhaps you might need to think of a person you know who is trying hard to win your left hand of forgiveness.

Stop and think about it: Jesus calls each of us to forgive others as He forgives us: with both hands of forgiveness. Can you be like the Prodigal Father or even “Ben Price” to someone’s “Retrieved Reformation?”—Deacon John
